50. Ruvell Martin vs. Atlanta

Inside the numbers:

  • Andre Johnson has 15 catches for 289 yards and two touchdowns in his past two games. It’s time he reclaims his number one ranking.
  • I don’t see Reggie Wayne matching the 15 catches for 196 yards he had the last time he faced Jacksonville, but he should put up big numbers.
  • You can pass the ball on the Ravens and Marques Colston, who has 535 yards and five touchdowns in his past six games, should be the primary beneficiary.
  • Hakeem Nicks caught seven passes for 96 yards. Barring any setbacks, it looks like he’s a strong WR1 once again.
  • If Matt Cassel can’t play this week, it would be hard to do so with Dwayne Bowe, who has faded as fast as Brett Favre the past two weeks.
  • Should somebody tell Deion Branch that it’s not 2005 anymore. The guy has been ridiculous the past two weeks. Meanwhile Wes Welker is averaging 79.3 yards and a score over his last four games.
  • In the first meeting with Cleveland T.O. caught ten passes for 210 yards.
  • Brandon Marshall was able to play last week, and barring a setback should be a force against Buffalo this week.
  • Greg Jennings, Sidney Rice, and Santonio Holmes will be hard to count on this week because of quarterback play. Larry Fitzgerald says “welcome to my world”.
  • ***Update***  Big Mike Williams appears good to go this week so I’m adding him to the rankings.
  • ***Update***  With both Brett Favre and Tarvaris Jackson, I have to downgrade Sidney Rice and Percy Harvin.

So usually I come in here and make crazy recommendations that either turn out to either be decent, or to be total flops. And most of the time, I do so for my own merit, hoping to make a good call that nobody else saw. But this time, I come bearing a suggestion in hopes that it will assist your accuracy rankings. And also for my own merit.

Seattle’s Mike Williams should finally be healthy on Sunday. He almost played this past weekend, but thankfully he sat out in order to be fully ready to go next week. In his last 6 full quarters of play (full game against Arizona, first half against New Orleans before getting hurt), he’s had 16 catches for 244 yards, on a ridiculous 22 targets. In Week 6 (first game with Deion Branch gone), he had 10 rec for 123 yards. At Chicago.

The Seahawks play at home this weekend against Atlanta (24th in passing defense). They are missing Deon Butler, and potentially Ben Obomanu, due to injuries. This is all the perfect storm for Williams, whose presence has directly correlated with Matt Hasselbeck’s success since Week 6.

My prediction for Williams: 11 rec, 120 yds, 1 TD

Also … you’re not buying into Vincent Jackson this weekend?

Grant – If Williams is able to practice tomorrow, he’ll likely force me to adjust my rankings. He has been awesome when he’s in there. The foot just scares me like Gates. VJax has yet to prove himself, but I suppose he should at least be top 50. The short week, they play on Thursday, concerns me a little.

With a favorable matchup and Collins playing “better”, wouldn’t Kenny Britt be in that top 50?

I know Fisher talked about having Moss/Britt on the field at the same time wouldn’t happen as often as we’d hope, but perhaps that will change after their loss.

I suppose Joe, though it’s hard to rely on a Titan WR right now. I can see a lot of passes to CJ and Scaife again.

Sorry, meant to be a little higher* in the top 50. But I kind of agree with you. It’s very inconsistent and at this time you’re probably better off looking for a safer play than a high risk/reward player. Thanks.

I had him out of the top 50, but I agree with you, especially against Houston he’s a borderline WR3. Depends on whether you are a gambler or not. I think I have a tendency to be conservative when someone is returning from injury.

LLoyd really fell on your list and Boldin is high, he didnt do much against Houston….can i trust him in my lineup in the playoffs

what about Kenny Britt this week against that soft Houston defense? Britt looked healthy last week. I’m debating between Britt and Holmes this week.. are you not ready to trust Kenny yet?

    December 14th, 2010 at 6:55 pm #

I’ve really soured on the Broncos’ passing attack. Depends on your other options Tega.
Ray – I’m not super sold on Britt yet, but that wouldn’t be a bad play. Sanchez has been awful so it would be tough for Holmes to do well. Then again, he’s playing his old team so he’ll be extra motivated.

I’m going to the mountain seeking advice. I need a receiver for the last three weeks – but not Brandon Lloyd or Roddy White. Given the schedule and the strange things that happen during the last week, who would you pick? (Yes, everyone is available … the old TSN format)

  12. LestersLegends
    December 15th, 2010 at 9:55 am #

I’d probably go with Reggie Wayne. You know he’s going to get plenty of looks and for the first time the Colts won’t be shutting everybody down at the end.

Lester, just found your site…I like. I have a tough question for you. I’m in the championship game for my league facing a tough opponent with good match-ups. If you had to pick one receiver and a flex player from the following players, who do you pick for this week: 1) Thomas Jones, 2) Tashard Choice, 3) Robert Meachem, 4) Danny Amendola, 5) Jason Avant, 6) Ruvell Martin, 7) Rashad Jennings, 8)Arrelious Benn.

I know this is a long list…but its the CHAMPIONSHIP…and I need help.

    December 15th, 2010 at 3:59 pm #

Thanks Matt. Tough one indeed. I’d go with Ruvell unless Big Mike Williams plays, in which case I’d go with Benn. At flex I’d go with Tashard Choice.

In playoff semifinals. TE’s get 1 pt for 6.7 yds. WR’s get 1 pt for 10 yds. TDs=6 pts. Must start 1 WR and 2 WR/TEs.

I am starting Roddy, TGonzo & Wallace.
    Bench is: Breaston, Amendola, Meachem
Waiver Wire: MWilliams-SEA, Fasano, LMurphy, VJax, Roy E Williams, Jacoby Jones, Bess.

Any advice? Thanks for your help!

    December 16th, 2010 at 4:14 am #

Ive got a wr spot and flex I think B Gibson is gooD this weekbut I have manningham, n Washington, avant, t jones and a dixon

  18. LestersLegends
    December 16th, 2010 at 6:41 am #

seige – You’re starting the players that I would.
mike – i would have a hard time starting him. you just don’t know what you’re going to get. i would assume he would get a limited number of snaps, splitting reps with blair white
anthony – manningham is hurting, dixon is sharing, tjones has disappeared, avant has been quiet, and i don’t love nate with britt back so I’m thinking gibson is your choice too.

Just wondering do you see santana moss in front of Bowe or britt this week? Tempting to start Britt and Bowe if Cassel is starting. Also would you play Blount over j charles? Cleveland or NE Defense? Thanks!

  20. LestersLegends
    December 16th, 2010 at 1:33 pm #

I have Moss a little higher than Britt, but I’m just being cautions. If Cassel starts Britt and Bowe sounds good. I like Blount a little better than Charles, but Charles obviously has more updside. I love the Pats D if Rodgers doesn’t play.

Wes welker or mike Williams I’m already starting deion branch

need to start 3 wrs (PPR league): woodhead, lloyd, floyd, branch, austin and stevie johnson

i can also go out and pick up mike williams (sea) or benn if need be

  24. LestersLegends
    December 16th, 2010 at 5:12 pm #

I’d roll with floyd, branch, and austin, but I would consider picking up big mike williams.

I went with Jackson last night and he came up huge. Im in a PPR and now I need advice on the two WR spots i have left, I have Santana Moss, Garcon, Lloyd, Bowe, and Rice. Big game

I like garcon and Bowe (provided that Cassel is back).

    Hi there!

Im starting Nicks and Austin at WR. Need 1 more.

Dispite Vikings troubles, im leaning towar P Harvin.

Have Knox, and many free agents.

  29. LestersLegends
    December 17th, 2010 at 12:02 pm #

I do not trust Harvin who has not practiced in weeks, is playing on horrible field conditions with a rookie QB.

So I put V-Jax in last night and was very very happy with my decision to gamble with him over Earl Bennett. However, with Malcom Floyd out last night, I now have to decide between Earl Bennett (outdoors at Minnesota) or Austin Collie (at Jacksonville) as my 3rd WR. Help!

  31. LestersLegends
    December 17th, 2010 at 1:04 pm #

I’d go with Bennett. Just can’t trust Collie who hasn’t played for so long.

  32. Grant
    December 17th, 2010 at 4:06 pm #

Alright Big Daddy, need a little assistance here. PPR league as usual, and I’ve got my QB (Vick) and my RBs (CJ and MJD) locked in. The 3 WRs, though, I am not so sure about:

    Marshall vs BUF
    M. Williams vs ATL
Jennings @ NE (temps in the 25F-30F range, and possibly snow)
Bennett @ MIN (temps in the 10F-15F range, and possibly snow)
    Fitzgerald @ CAR
    Rice vs CHI
    Ochocinco vs CLE

Marshall and Williams are locks in my book (though I’d obviously like your opinion on that). My biggest question is really Jennings vs Bennett. Obviously in the best-case scenario, Rodgers starts and Jennings is a lock … but that looks doubtful. So assuming Flynn starts for GB, is there a scenario in which you would start Bennett (or someone else!) over Jennings?

  33. LestersLegends
    December 17th, 2010 at 4:51 pm #

I’m with you on Marshall and Williams and I think I’d go with my boy Fitz. He’s averaging five catches in his past three games and should have a decent game against Carolina.

  34. Grant
    December 17th, 2010 at 4:56 pm #

I just worry about Skelton’s ability to throw against a team with a slightly-better secondary than last week’s cupcake (Denver). Bottom line, though, is that I’m considering this to be the WR3 spot, and I would easily take Fitz’s standard 10 points there.

Well, I decided to go with my safety blanket, Jennings over Fitzgerald. As of right now, the jury’s still out … but Jenning’s TD catch just put me over the top. I’m headed to the finals …
