2011 Fantasy Football Early Buy Low Candidates

Oct 1, 2011

Big Ben
.
Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Pittsburgh Steelers:  Big Ben has thrown for 942 yards, but isn’t putting up huge fantasy numbers because he’s only thrown three touchdowns. To make matters worse he’s tossed four picks. Ben is capable of putting up much better numbers and is a nice option if you can get him at a discount. Philip Rivers (four TDs, six INTs), Josh Freeman (two TDs, four INTs) and Matt Ryan (five TDs, four INTs) are other targets.
.
Knowshon Moreno, RB, Denver Broncos:  A hamstring injury has Moreno off to a slow start. He had 57 total yards (22 rushing) in the opener. Look for him to eventually win the starting gig back from Willis McGahee, who is better suited as the secondary running back. DeAngelo Williams could be had at a discount, although I’m not sure I’d even look to grab him. If I went after a Panthers’ running back it would be Jonathan Stewart.
.
Mike Williams, WR, Tampa Bay Bucanneers:  Williams has just ten receptions on the year for 89 yards and a score. In Week 2 against the Vikings he actually had negative points in non-PPR leagues. Tampa is off to a slow start, but should they come around like most expected them to, Williams will likely play a key role. Hakeem Nicks has been quiet the past two weeks (38 & 25 yards), though his discount will be marginal. Santonio Holmes has seen his receptions and yardage take a nose dive the past two weeks. A frustrated owner might be willing to make a change.
.
Kellen Winslow, TE, Tampa Bay Bucanneers:  Winslow is about the only TE to consider buying low. Antonio Gates is a scary proposition given his injury. Same goes for Dallas Clark, not because of his injury, rather because of Peyton Manning’s. Winslow has declined each of the past few weeks and is averaging 43.3 yards per game. He’s better than that. Given the depth at the tight end position I wouldn’t make that strong an offer for him.
.
Pittsburgh Steelers Defense:  The Steelers have managed just two takeaways through three game, which is a far cry from what tehy are capable of.  With a match-up with Houston this week their owners aren’t using them confidently this week. The Dream Team (Philadelphia Eagles) on the other side of the state can’t stop the run and have also failed to meet early expectations.
