2011 NFL Rookie Watch: Ryan Mallett

Jan 6, 2011

Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett has declared for the upcoming 2011 NFL Draft. The 6’6″, 238 pound strong-armed quarterback followed up his 3627 yard, 30 touchdown, 7 interception sophomore season with 3869 yards, 32 TDs, and 12 INTs in his junior year.
The decision makes sense considering he already lost a season when he transferred to Arkansas from Michigan. Not to mention he likely slid up a spot in quarterback rankings when Andrew Luck opted to return to Stanford.
He’ll likely go in the first round unless he completely falls on his face at the combine. Depending on where he lands, he could see the playing field in 2011. From a fantasy perspective, he should only draw attention in dynasty leagues.

Mike and Mike were talking about Blaine Gabbert possibly going in the top 5 now that Luck has opted out. Looking at Gabbert’s numbers, and having watched him play minimally, I just don’t see it. I think about all the “bust” top-10 QBs over the last many years (Russell, Leinart, Carr, Harrington, Couch, Akili Smith, Leaf, etc.) … we may have another to join those ranks.

QBs are so hard to judge, but you very well could be right.

On the Sports Guy podcast, Trent Dilfer had Gabbert up to 2 with Luck 1, meaning that he feels he’s the best QB out there. I do wonder if a potential lockout played into Luck’s decision.

The lockout had to play into his decision, but I’m not sure if things will be better next year as opposed to this year.
