2012 Get ‘em or Don’t Sweat ‘em – Week 5

Oct 1, 2012

There were some unusual heroes on Sunday. There always are. Let’s take a look at them and see if they are worthy of your fantasy rosters.
Kevin Kolb, RB, Arizona Cardinals
The two INTs weren’t great, but he threw three touchdowns, his second straight multi-TD week, and 324 yards. He has a few solid match-ups coming up, but I’d only use him in two-quarterback leagues.
Ruling:  Don’t Sweat ‘em.
Brandon Weeden, QB, Cleveland Browns
Weeden reached the 300-yard plateau for the second time in three games. He has been very inconsistent. He is only a viable option in two-quarterback leagues.
Ruling:  Don’t Sweat ‘em.
Jackie Battle, RB, San Diego Chargers
To Ryan Mathews’ owners chagrin Battle scored twice while compiling 81 total yards. If you’re going to carry a handcuff, it appears Battle is the one.
Ruling:  Don’t Sweat ‘em.
Brandon Bolden, RB, New England Patriots
Scored for the second straight week as he picked up 137 yards on 16 carries. Keep in mind they were playing (and pounding) the Bills.
Ruling:  Don’t Sweat ‘em.
Donald Jones, WR, Buffalo Bills
Caught two passes on three targets for 90 yards and a score. He could be a bye-week fill-in possibly, but isn’t a guy to rush out and obtain.
Ruling:  Don’t Sweat ‘em.
James Jones, WR, Green Bay Packers
Jones caught five of his six targets for 56 yards and two touchdowns. Given Jennings’ health, I would add Jones.
Ruling:  Get ‘em.
Andre Roberts, WR, Arizona Cardinals
If  Roberts was dropped after having a combined 57 yards the past two weeks, he might be worth a look. He caught six passes on nine targets for 118 yards and a pair of touchdowns. That gives him four on the year.
Ruling:  Get ‘em.
Mike Williams, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Williams caught four of his eight targets for 115 yards. The Skins are terrible against the pass, but he’s a good WR depth option.
Ruling:  Get ‘em.
Kendall Wright, WR, Tennessee Titans
Wright caught four passes on eight targets for 46 yards and a score. He’s good WR depth.
Ruling:  Get ‘em.
Marcedes Lewis, TE, Jacksonville Jaguars
I had him as a sleeper pick and he managed to score. The Bengals have struggled against tight ends this year and the Jags have struggled to move the ball.
Ruling:  Don’t Sweat ‘em.

What would you do in this situation…(sorry this is long)

My WR’s are Calvin Johnson, Greg Jennings, Reggie Wayne, Vincent Jackson, and Brandon LaFell (who I know hasn’t played good since his first two strong weeks). I assumed my week 5 line-up would consist of Jennings, Wayne, and LaFell since Johnson and Jackson are on a bye. Now, Jennings will likely be out (yet again) after re-injuring his groin. So I’m down another WR.

My bench looks like this for my non-starters. TE Heath Miller, RB Steven Jackson, RB Mikel LeShoure, RB Philip Rivers.

I don’t want to drop any of them, since I’m sure someone will snatch them right up. Would you you keep an empty WR slot and hope the rest of the team produces, or would you try to get a fill-in with the risk of losing one of your other depth players.

Here are the top available WRs: Brian Hartline, Andre Roberts, Donald Jones, Davone Bess, Cecil Shorts, Nate Burleson, Donnie Avery, Leonard Hankerson, Golden Tate, Jacoby Jones, just to name a few.

Standard format league. Thanks in advance!

I was offered julio and steven jackson for gronk and boldin. Would you pull the trigger on that trade?

I would grab Hartline for LaFell. I’d probably drop Heath Miller and grab Andre Roberts as well. I wouldn’t want to go in with an empty slot and Miller has been great, but there are a lot of solid TEs out there.
Rozay – that’s a pretty even trade. hard to say without knowing your rb, wr, te situation.

Frank gore, cj spiller. Greg jennings, anquan and kenny britt, kyle rudolph. Adding S-jax and julio fill needs, what do you think?

For the most part you are using gore and spiller at rb so it’s basically gronk for julio, which I wouldn’t do at this point.

Thanks for the advice. I figured s-jax would be more productive long term then spiller now that he’s time sharing with fred

That is a good point, but Spiller was so good when Fred was out. Both showed toughness getting back early. I think Spiller should be the guy baed on how good he was. With your WR situation what it is, you do need wr help and adding rb depth wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Yeah it seems like gailey is loyal to fred jackson though. I don’t consider boldin a weekly starter, so I feel like I’d be getting 2 starters for gronk.

ill keep the trade on the table for 1 more week, see what spiller does week 5 and claim andre roberts or hartline. Thanks for the advice!

no problem. I’d see what other offers you can get as well.

I’d do that. Don’t lose much at QB (if at all based on his start) and get a solid RB.

I have julio and andre johnson but both of them have been very inconsistent, should I make an attempt at brandon marshall ?

Julio killed me last week, while Colston was going banshee on my bench. He appears to be healthy now. Julio is too feast or famine and Colston is more steady when healthy. In my league you start just one RB (Rice) one WR, and you can flex 2 players. I was thinking of putting Colston in the WR spot. That leaves 2 spots at flex open, one of which i have Jamaal Charles in. Out of Ridley, MWallace, Julio, and Antonio Brown, who should i fill the last flex spot with? I have Ridley in now, he’s been fairly solid. Or should i leave Julio in knowing that Roddy seems to still be ‘the guy’?

Bill – Marshall is inconsistent as well
Somewhere – I wonder if Julio’s hand is bothering him. He has a juicy match-up this wek, but I understand if you don’t want the risk. Ridely is who I’d go with if I didn’t use Julio.

Thanks for the advice. Wallace is tempting to play as well, seeing as how he’s scored in every game and the Steelers don’t run the ball effectively, plus Philly has a good run D and Pitt will have to throw to win. I have Stafford on a bye this week so i have to throw out Big Ben unless you think the typical names on the QB waiver wire (Cutler, Freeman, etc.) would do better. I’d rather roll Big Ben. He was ranked 3rd before the bye week last week, and has looked pretty good.

I’d go Big Ben. Not sure how Wallace will handle Nnamdi Asomugha.

Yeah, Philly has good corners for sure. I have 2 very good D/ST’s. Who do you like better this week, although both should be solid plays i think. Houston @ NYJ Monday night, or Chicago at J’Ville? Both NYJ and J’Ville’s offenses look pretty bad. Leaning towards Houston myself due to NY looking stagnant on O. Thoughts?

Sorry to be a pest but would you roll Colston over Julio this week, even if Julio is healthy? Colston is getting a ton of targets. I think White/Jones will be a seasaw in points every week.

    October 2nd, 2012 at 8:37 am #

I would probably go Houston as well. Agree both good match-ups. I’m a big Julio guy so I’d probably go that way, but I don’t see anything wrong with the safe play of Colston. He’s a big time option as well.

    I have:

    QB Brady, Schaub

    RB Ridley, Spiller, Deangelo Williams

WR Welker, AJ Green, Antonio Brown, Lafell, Kerley

    TE Gronkowski, Hernandez, Heath Miller

    D/ST Ravens, Bears

    K Gostkowski

I am tenth in waiver position of ten. There are three players I am considering that I could possibly pick up, probably for Kerley. All three are available:

    WR Brian Hartline
    WR Andre Roberts
    RB Jackie Battle

Which one if any of these should I go for?

    Thanks, sorry this was long.

  23. LestersLegends
    October 2nd, 2012 at 10:42 am #

I would look to add them for Kerley in the order of hartline, battle, roberts.

Depends on what you have to give up. They are both worthy of roster spots in most leagues.

    Fantasy Rookie here….
RB Ray Rice, Frank Gore, Andre Brown,
WR AJ Green, Miles Austin, Alshon Jeffery, Andre Roberts, Denarius, Davone Bess
    TE Jimmy Graham, Kyle Rudolph

    Would you do this Trade:
    Gore/Rudolph for Alfred Morris/Stevie Johnson?
    Starters are 2rb, 2wr, 1Flex

  38. LestersLegends
    October 3rd, 2012 at 8:14 pm #

    QB- Stafford Big Ben
    RB- Rice Charles Ridley Leshoure
WR- Julio Wallace Colston Antonio Brown
    TE- Graham Witten
    D/ST Houston Chicago
    K Tucker Bailey

Is there an area where i should be looking to improve/upgrade? Getting alot of trade offers for various WR’s. I’ve said no to all of them, plus I’m not a big ‘trade guy’. ???
