Here’s an updated look at the LestersLegends 2012 fantasy football quarterback rankings.
1. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers: I had him ranked number one last year. 4643 passing yards, 257 rushing yards, 48 total TDs (45 passing), six INTs later I haven’t changed my opinion.
2. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints: The team is in a crap storm right now, and he will miss Sean Payton, but Brees shattered the passing record last year with 5476 yards and 46 TDs.
3. Tom Brady, New England Patriots: I foolishly thought the because he had some monster games along with some stinkers that he wasn’t a top five fantasy QB last year. I won’t make that mistake again. Adding Brandon Lloyd to Gronk, Welker, and Hernandez makes him even more dangerous.
4. Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers: They added Mike Tolbert, which could cut into the 14 TDs he ran for last year. Still with 4051 passing yards, 21 passing scores, and 706 rushing yards it’s hard not to imagine another monster fantasy year from Cam.
5. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions: Am I giving him too much credit? Hard to say that when you have the game’s most dominating receiver. Not to mention coming off a 5038 yard, 41 TD season.
6. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys: Romo threw for 4184 yards, 31 TDs, and just ten INTs. He has as many weapons as anybody.
7. Eli Manning, New York Giants: With more passing yards (4933) than Peyton ever threw, along with 29 TDs, and two Super Bowl rings, it’s safe to say he’s out of his brother’s shadow. Call me crazy, but I think he’s a safer fantasy play too.
8. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers: 4624 yards and 27 TDs is considered a bad year (20 INTs) for Rivers. I’ll take that to the bank.
9. Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos: He’s Peyton so I suppose I have to give him the benefit of a top ten ranking, but he’s in a new place, where weather could play a factor, and potentially worse weapons puts Peyton in an unfamiliar spot (out of the top five).
10. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons: With Roddy White and Julio Jones there aren’t many QBs with a better 1-2 punch at WR at their disposal.
11. Michael Vick, Philadelphia Eagles: Last year was a disaster for Vick, though he threw for a career high 3303 yards. I expect more rushing TDs and some explosive games, but you are going to have injury issues.
12. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers are committed to becoming a more pass-happy team. With his weapons, Big Ben should deliver.
13.  Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears:  Reuniting with Brandon Marshall and adding Alshon Jeffrey in the draft gives Cutler the best weapons since his days in Denver.
14.  Matt Schaub, Houston Texans:  If he and Andre Johnson can stay healthy, Schaub will be a fringe QB1.
15.  Alex Smith, San Francisco 49ers:  Randy Moss is said to be looking good. With Mario Manningham, Michael Crabtree, and Vernon Davis, Smith has plenty of options.
16.  Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens:  I expect more from Torrey Smith this year, which will help Flacco’s numbers.
17.  Ryan Fitzpatrick, Buffalo Bills:  He’s thrown 23 and 24 TDs the past two years. If he can bounce back from his second-half slide he should be a decent QB2.
18.  Robert Griffin III, Washington Redskins:  RG3 seems to have what it takes to deliver right away, but you never quite know with rookies.
19.  Andy Dalton, Cincinnati Bengals:  Had a solid rookie year and should continue to progress with A.J. Green.
20.  Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts:  He’ll have bumps along the way, but he also brings a lot of anticipation. Having Reggie Wayne to lean on helps.

Hi again Mr. Lester! Had two questions.. In a standard league… where TDs for QB is 6 pts.. I pick at 2 in a standard and I pick at 5 in a 14TEAM league… I don’t know how anybody doesnt go top tier QB First… ?? If you look at the pts for QBs last year.. Brees, Brady, Rodgers eclipsed 350 and some change….? I was curious if you QB rankings are going to change…? Rodgers may not have Jennings and BRady has more options now but a year older? A brees, well…. BountyGate and Peyton not there.. HOw would you rank the QBs? And can you convince me NOT to take a QB with the top 5 picks? esp when TDs are 6pts! IN addition, any special strategy for 14 team leagues other than picking best player available??

Lance – I hear what you’re saying. I just don’t know that I could go that route with Arian Foster, Ray Rice, or McCoy on the board in the league you pick #2.

At the five slot, I can see that though, especially in a 14-team league. Not ready to change my QBs at this point, but I can definitely see movement.

Part of my strategy for a league that size would be to get a solid QB. You are on board with that. Obviously you will have to take some risks, but don’t forget to take a few boring, safe picks.

Do you believe in using a value tier system for your drafts? And if so, have you/would you publish your tier groupings?

Awesome. Thank you. Not sure if you’d be willing to publish your tiers for WRs, RBs, and TEs, but it would be most appreciated. You are an amazing resource.

One other question: I have the seventh pick in a ten team, PPR league. I am hoping for either Brady or Brees in the 1st round, with an RB in the second, and best available in the third (any thoughts you have on taking a QB late in the first are welcomed). If the top three QBs are gone by the seventh pick, I am planning on taking the best available RB. My primary question relates to what I do in the second if I take an RB in the first. Do you support taking one of the top two TEs or do you think it wiser to take a second RB?

Thanks GOR. I will try to do the WRs, RBs, and TEs.

I would probably take Gronk or Graham over whatever RB would be available there.

Hello Lester! I am in a 8 team league snake draft. For example, I have 6th pick and my wrap around pick is 11. I am thinking foster, rice, rodgers, rees, brady gone who would you go for?

    GOR – Here’s the TEs – http://lesterslegends.com/2012-fantasy-football-tight-rankings-tier/

Rob – I would go with LeSean McCoy or Calvin Johnson.

Hey RL…looking forward to another season. Any thoughts on my (12 team, PPR) starting roster, taking into account after ignoring the QB position first five rounds I was left with Romo, Roth, or Rivers (6th).

    QB Tony Romo
    RB Chris Johnson
    RB DeMarcus Murray
    RB/WR CJ Spiller
    WR Percy Harvin
    WR Demaryius Thomas
    TE Jimmy Graham
    DEF Philadelphia
    K Matt Prater
