Is Andre Johnson Still Elite?
Andre Johnson is still capable of a big game. He has seventeen catches for 161 yards in his past two games. With just one 100-yard game and two touchdowns on the year, he isn’t putting up the numbers that you’d expect from an elite receiver. Has he lost that title?
He is only 31, but has battled his share of injuries. That said, he has remained healthy this year and the bye week should help cure any nagging ailments. He may not be the same athlete he was from 2008-2010 when he was in the discussion for the best wide receiver in the league, but he’s still a terrific option for the Texans.
However, for fantasy football owners, things are a different. It’s not quite “Houston, we have a problem”, but there is some concern.
As I mentioned Johnson only has two touchdowns on the year and is averaging just 63.4 yards per game. In non-PPR leagues he’s averaging around eight fantasy points per game.
That is not elite, and he’s not all to blame. In blowout wins against Jacksonville and Tennessee he caught a combined six passes for 77 yards. He also had just one catch for 15 yards in a win over the Jets. Arian Foster ran the ball 29 times that day.
Therein lies the problem. The Texans run the ball so well that often don’t have to attempt many passes. They rely on their defense and the running game to shorten games.
Of Johnson’s seven games, he has eight or more receptions in three of them. He still has the ability to have the big day. It’s a matter of whether or not he’s in position to.
I do like his upcoming schedule. He faces Buffalo coming out of the bye. He also takes on Jacksonville, Detroit, Tennessee, New England, Indianapolis, and Minnesota. Other than Chicago, he has plus match-ups to close out the fantasy season.
If you have him…hold on to him. If you don’t have him, see if his owner is frustrated.
