How to bet on baseball’s World Series

Jun 20, 2016

Baseball is a sport that involves lots of statistics – batting average, on-base percentage and strikeouts, for example – so naturally, it’s one of the most popular to bet on, both for gamblers in the United States and further afield.
.
But just how does baseball betting work, and how does it differ from other major sports? Read on for tips on how to place bets on baseball showpiece event: the World Series.
.
Where to start with baseball betting
.
Before placing a bet on the outcome of the World Series, it’s important to develop a knowledge and understanding of the game of baseball, ideally throughout the Major League Baseball season. A prosperous betting strategy will consider a wide range of statistics, such as how pitchers and hitters have performed over the course of the season, the records of teams home and away and how performance differed between regular season and the play-offs.
.
In the case of last season’s World Series between Kansas City Royals and the New York Mets, seasoned bettors would have recognised that, with a superior season record and a better winning percentage, the Royals were favourites to win. Ultimately they did so, pummelling the Mets 4-1 inside five games.
.
Popular baseball bets
.
Betting on ‘the moneyline’
.
The moneyline is the easiest baseball bet to start with. When two teams face each other, there will always be a favourite and an outsider. The favourite will be listed with a minus figure, the outsider with a positive. So, for the 2015 World Series, the moneyline might have looked like this:
.
Kansas City Royals -200
.
New York Mets +170
.
If you wanted to win $100 from a bet on the Royals, you’d have to wager $200, but the same amount bet on the Mets would win you $340, as you’d “add” $170 to your winnings for every $100 wagered. Although, across a season, with even the strongest teams losing around 40% of the games, a strategy of betting on the favourite might lose you money, this is a safer tactic to adopt across a ‘one-off’ event like the World Series. Still, it’s probably worth always placing smaller amounts on the underdog, just in case.
.
Betting on totals
.
Another popular betting option, this allows you to place money on the total number of runs scored in a game. Again, this is usually given as a ‘betting line’, and gamblers can place a wager on the team scoring under or over that amount.
.
Odds might be listed as:
.
8½ O -130
8½ U +130
.
Betting the runline
.
In our example, the Royals are clear moneyline favourites to beat the Mets (which, of course, they did!), but to achieve better odds, gamblers might want to add on a runline bet. This relates to how many runs the Royals will emerge victorious by. Here’s an example, for two runs:
.
Royals -2 +110
.
Mets +2 -140
.
So, for the Royals to win by two runs, you’d get $110 for every $100 wagered, a significantly better outcome than before.
.
There are hundreds upon hundreds of ways of betting on the World Series, but above are some of the most popular – start your MLB betting strategy with these and then move on to the more complex stuff once you’ve got the hang of everything!
