Fantasy Baseball: Can Mike Moustakas Break Out in 2012?

Mike Moustakas had a decent rookie season, posting a .263-26-5-30-2 line in 338 at bats over 89 games. Although he didn’t get swallowed alive by Major League pitching, he didn’t set himself apart with his .309 on-base percentage, .367 slugging percentage, and .675 OPS.
.
The question is can he bust out in 2012 and form a solid 1-2 punch with Eric Hosmer? Despite a slow spring, the signs are pointing in the right direction.
.
For starters, he has the pedigree. He handled Triple-A pitching to the tune of .293 batting average, .845 OPS last year and .293, .878 in 2010. He smacked 25 HRs in 448 at bats for Triple-A Omaha. Not everybody that produces at the Triple-A (and every other level for that matter) lives up to the hype at the big league level, but he hasn’t shown any reason he can’t produce.
.
Another encouraging sign was the way Moustakas finished the season. In his first 25 games he hit .228 with a .577 OPS. Clearly he struggled initially with big league pitching. He settled in though, hitting. .276 with a .713 in the remaining 64 games. He was smoking in 22 September games, hitting .352 with a .960 OPS. Four of his five long balls came in September.
.
The good thing is he can be had on the cheap. His Mock Draft Central ADP is 222. That put him in the 19th round of 12-team leagues. He is the 13th third baseman to come off the board, behind the likes of Ryan Roberts.

Is he a worth a look at the latter stages of a fantasy draft? Absolutely. Can this be his break out year? Absolutely.

Ersan Ilyasova wasn’t exactly brilliant last night collecting seven points and six rebounds. In his past 12 games he has six games with double-figure rebounds, including a season-high 19 on January 25th. Over that 13 game stretch he has averaged 9.8 rebounds. He added 10.1 ppg and 0.8 as well. As an added bonus, he knocked down five three-pointers during the stretch.
.
With Andrew Bogut out he should continue to see heavy minutes, which in turn leads to solid rebound numbers and unexpected three-pointers. He won’t blow you away with his scoring, but he can see double-figures on occasion.
.
Ilyasova is owned in 36.0 percent of Yahoo! and 31.2 percent of ESPN leagues.
.
Meanwhile Chris Kaman is coming off a monster 27 point, 13 rebound effort starting in place of Emeka Okafor. Even if Okafor isn’t sidelined for many games with his knee injury, there is no doubt that Kaman has earned himself additional playing time with his outburst.

Kaman missed Friday’s game with an ankle injury of his own, but in the past three games in which he’s played he has averaged 18.0 points, 11.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 0.7 steals, and 2.0 blocks. While I don’t expect him to put up anything near those numbers the rest of the way, he did post a 18.5 ppg, 9.2 rpb, 1.6 apg, 1.2 bpg back in the 2009-10 season for the Clippers.

Kaman is owned in about three-quarters of ESPN leagues, but only a little over half of Yahoo! leagues. That number will sure to rise quickly thanks to last night’s game.

2011-12 Wild Card Round Fantasy DEF Rankings

Here is the Lester’s Legends fantasy football team defense rankings for the Wild Card Round.
.
1. Pittsburgh Steelers @ Denver Broncos: This is easily my favorite match-up of the Wild Card Round. Tebow seems to have lost his mojo and the Steelers’ physical play will make it difficult for him to reclaim it. I suspect they will limit his running ability, forcing him to beat them with his arm. I don’t see that happening.

2. Houston Texans vs. Cincinnati Bengals: The Texans have had a rock solid defense this year ranking fourth in scoring (17.4) and second in yards allowed (285.7). Wade Phillips will challenge rookie Andy Dalton and the Bengals , who rank 18th with 21.5 ppg.
.
3. Denver Broncos vs. Pittsburgh Steelers: The Broncos have the pass rushers to get after the Steelers, who have allowed 42 sacks this year. Pittsburgh is tied for 21st with 20.3 ppg, just lost their starting RB, and have a less than 100 percent Big Ben.
.
4. Cincinnati Bengals @ Houston Texans: Not only is Houston down to their third quarterback, he’s banged up. Andre Johnson is going to play more extensively and the ground game will move the chains.
.
5. New York Giants vs. Atlanta Falcons: I don’t love any of the NFC defenses. The offenses are just too good. Though I think their secondary will get picked apart, the G-Men have a great pass rush, which should get them some sacks and possibly force some turnovers.
.
6. Atlanta Falcons vs. New York Giants: The Giants are on fire, but Eli is known to throw a few picks. His WRs seem to cause more INTs than any other team.
.
7. New Orleans Saints vs. Detroit Lions: I don’t think anyone can cover Calvin Johnson. Not from this planet anyway, especially with how good Stafford has been. The Saints have an opportunistic defense and could force a few turnovers.
.
8. Detroit Lions @ New Orleans Saints: The Lions have the tallest order facing the potent Saints offense. Not only do they score a ton of points, Drew Brees seldom makes mistakes.
