Dennis Martinez was suggested by aajoe7, a friend of mine from the Sporting News community.  I’ve decided to review his numbers and offer my opinion to his Hall of Fame worthiness.

The Numbers
692 Games (90th All-time)
3999.7 Innings Pitched (39th All-time)
245-193 (49th All-time)
.559 Winning Percentage
122 Complete Games
30 Shutouts
8 Saves
2149 Strikeouts(53rd All-time)
3.70 ERA
1.267 WHIP

Playoffs:  12 games, 2-2, 3.32 ERA, 43.1 innings, 18 K’s

4 All Star Games
Cy Young votes in two seasons
MVP votes in one season

Top Ten Finishes
Wins – Five times (Led league in 1981)
ERA – Five times (Led league in 1991)
Won-Loss % – Five times
Innings – Nine times (Lead league in 1981)
Strikeouts – Three times
Starts – Seven times
Complete Games – Seven times (Led league in 1979 & 1991)
Shutouts – Seven times (Led league in 1991)

He’s got an awesome nickname (El Presidente), and had a real solid career.  His overall numbers are really nice.  However, he never won more than 16 games or struck out 200 batters in a season.  He had a few really good years (1981 & 1991 especially), but never finished higher than fifth in Cy Young voting.  I like El Presidente, but he comes up short.
