I decided to profile Hall of Famer Mickey Welch, who was enshrined by the Veteran’s Committee in 1973.

Hall of Fame Yardsticks:
Black Ink: Pitching – 6 (367) (Average HOFer ≈ 40)
Gray Ink:  Pitching – 236 (26) (Average HOFer ≈ 185)
HOF Standards: Pitching – 58.0 (19) (Average HOFer ≈ 50)
HOF Monitor: Pitching – 199.0 (21) (Likely HOFer > 100)

I’m surprised that a 300 Game Winner with 525 Complete Games and a 2.71 ERA was kept out of the Hall of Fame for so long.  I understand it was a different game, but even judging by his peers he was HOF material.  He was consistently among the leaders in every statistical category for nine seasons.  Even if you say the game was different back then, then why aren’t there more pitchers of the era ahead of him in career totals?  I’m sorry, but no way should Smiling Mickey have been kept out of Cooperstown for over 80 years.
