Cooperstown Chronicles – Pete Ro$e

This one is a little controversial.  Obviously the numbers and awards make him a shoe in.  You’re either for Rose or against Rose.  Personally, I’m for him.

Like I said, his numbers and awards were enough to make him a first ballot HOFer.  His ability, drive, determination, longevity, and consistency has never been called into question.  His character has though.  His character is what has kept him from being celebrated as one of the best balleball players of all time.  Betting on baseball is against the rules.  I get that.  However, his gambling came after his career as a player.  I agree with the ban on him from being employed by Major League Baseball, but what he did as a player should not be ignored.  He earned the nickname Charlie Hustle.  He proved himself to be one of the greatest this game has ever witnessed.  There are plenty of Hall of Famers with skeletons in their closets.  Racists like Ty Cobb and Cap Anson.  Drug dealers like Orlando Cepeda.  Cheaters like Gaylord Perry.  Soon members of the steroid era will make their way into the Hall.  It’s time to let Pete Rose in as well.  Here’s the way to do it though.  Don’t have the traditional ceremony.  Don’t let him do a speech.  Just put up his bust and do a press release.

If you think I’m off my rocker for wanting to induct Pete Rose into the HOF, please let me know.

Amen Rose In my opinion, without Rose the hall of fame will not be complete, he was never my favorite player, but it is what it is.

I will not respect any commissioner that does not explore the possibility of letting bygone be bygone in Rose’s case. The guy exemplified baseball. “Charlie Hustle”. I couldn’t stand him when I was a kid, but its not like he was on steroids. He should be forgiven!

BT – Totally agree. Pete Rose played the game the way it’s supposed to be played. Yes he made mistakes after his playing career, but it was just that. After his playing career. What he did prior to that should not be ignored. There were bad guys in the Hall before him, and when the dust clears on the steroid stuff, there will be bad guys in after him. Enough is enough.

Absolutely, put Pete in. One of the games alltime greats. Changed games with his hustle and ability to get on base. Gave up his body (other’s bodies … Ray Fosse allstar game) for the game. We want Pete!

Yes, I agree. Let Rose in the Hall of Fame. And NEVER allow him near managing a team again…ever. I’m a Rose fan, going back to 1970, too.

It makes no sense how they have blackballed this guy so bad! I really think that there is no real HoF without this man. The HoF is supposed to be about the best of the best. He has gotten better numbers than anyone in hits and such, but of course because he gambled, hes done. The problem with that issue is that he has told the truth, so let him in! Great on LestersLegends, as usual!

Totally agree Leafs. What he did as a manager shouldn’t take away what he did as a player.

Rose is certainly a scumbag, but if Hall Of Famers Ty Cobb,Rogers Hornsby
and Tris Speaker can be seen at a Ku Klux Klan gathering in the ’20′s-
not to mention there was overwhelming evidence which Commissioner
Kenesaw Mountain Landis-who rigidly policed the colour bar until his
death in 1944-chose to conveniently ignore-that Player/Managers Cobb of
the Tigers and Speaker of the Indians conspired to fix at least one game in 1920-Rose should be enshrined, albeit with a notation of his
gambling while Reds skipper which got him banned from baseball.

I can’t believe there is a unanimous concensus here to let this scumbag into the HOF. Now, I don’t like Pete Rose, not as a person and it has nothing to do with his gambling and I love that he’s been blacklisted. he’s a scumbag who’s all for hustle and breaking some catcher’s head in a meaningless all star game but gets pissed if a team he’s no hitting hustles for a hit in the late innings.

But even these should not bar any player. He shold not be in the hall BECAUSE HE BROKE THE GAME’S CARDINAL RULE. YOU DO NOT REPEAT DO NOT BET ON GAMES NOT AS A PLAYER NOT AS A MANAGER NOT AS THE GUY WHO BANDAGES PLAYERS. Get it? The other scumbags like Ty Cobb who were allegedly in the kkk makes them terrible people but that has nothing to do with the game. In the game, they were clean. They belong. pete scumbag rose broke the rules, He undermined the game by betting on it. He’s rightfully barred. Even OJ simpson should be in the football hof because his despicable criminal behavior has nothing to do with the game he played. If Gaylord Perry cheated, he should be out too, no questions.

The hall of fame is for exception PLAYERS, not humans. If we only allowed the best humans in the hall, cooperstown would probably only have roberto clemente anyway. but pete rose, despite being a scumbag as a person, is also a scumbag as a player and that makes him ineligible for the acclaim.

What he did was as a manager. not what he did as a player. he’s a HOF player. he should be barred from having a job in baseball, but his play as a player should not be overlooked.

With all the drugs running ramped since before steroids to keep him out is a crime..We had drunks, rapists, perverts, drugs such as cocaine, lsd, heroin, pot, and amphetanimes placed on the dressing table in clubhouses to enhance the players like roids are suppose to do..Remember the heros stars were protected then
Rose lay bets..Shoeless joe should be in too..cansaco is the only one telling the truth..everyone is guilty ..get rose in.

by no means Rose has the personality of a head of lettice..Not a socialable guy or family man..He still deserves to be let in and he is 70 years nice to see pete and allie get in.
    Hey that was a movie.
