I’d have to have an IQ like John Stuart Mill’s or Albert Einstein’s to
begin to explain why Rick Ferrell is a Hall Of Famer.After 50 years as a
baseball fan,I’ve seen,conservatively,50 catchers who were better than
Ferrell whose only chance of getting to Cooperstown is buying a plane or
bus ticket there and visiting the Hall,as should have been Ferrell’s fate.
Oh,I know:As Tigers GM in the 50′s,Ferrell was instrumental in kee-
ping the club lily-white(and lousy)until ’59,when a washed-up
Larry Doby briefly patrolled left-field for the Bengals.(Some call
Ozzie Virgil,who debut with a 5-for-5 game June 6,1958-a month before
my fifth birthday,the first black Tiger,but almost no blacks regard
Virgil as black,and even the Dominican-born Virgil,first big-leaguer
from his country,said he suffered relatively few of the attendant hu-
miliations of being considered of African heritage a half-century
ago.
Anyway,Ferrell is among the ten-worst Hall Of Famers ever.
