I liked Willie McGee too, but I don't see any chance he gets in.

Yep, great manager. Like stated above, he did it with pitching, defense, and speed. Only scary bat in the lineup was George Hendrick. Growing up on Long island and a Met fan I got to see the Cards quite a bit and to Whitey's credit they played great team baseball.
I alway thought Willie McGee was an underated player. Fine hitter & center fielder though. What's his chance of ever getting to the HOF..

I can tell you're passionate. It's tough to say who's the best, but I think he's right up there and is deserving of a spot in Cooperstown.

He wasn't one of the best in the past 1/4 century, he was the best. His teams played baseball the way it's supposed to be played. Great team speed, defense and approach to the game. They knew if they stayed close they had the chance to win. Today's game is about the home run, in fact, some times that's the game, a few home runs and it's over -- boring. He had a great eye for talent and as any good management program will tell you, you have to be willing to take risks; Whitey always was. If he came back today and had the appropriate control an latitude to get it done, the team would win again. Jack Buck said in his book that he was simply a baseball genius. As one who almost never missed a Cardinals game in the 80's, it was simply the best of times.
