Ditch Devin Funchess?

Devin Funchess
.
I know it’s just one game and you shouldn’t over react, but if you are looking to acquire a player that breaks out on Sunday, it may be wise to part ways with Devin Funchess.
.
He had a nondescript rookie season out of Michigan with 31 catches for 473 yards and five touchdowns. That is including a seven catch, 120 yards season finale. Including that outburst Funchess only topped 41 yards three times. He was also limited to 12 games with two or fewer receptions. On only two occasions did he secure four or more receptions.
.
The Panthers’ playoff run did not see an increase in production either. He topped out at 40 yards in the three games while catching a combined five passes.
.
The talk throughout camp was that Kelvin Benjamin wasn’t quite back to his old self and Funchess was coming on.
.
Flash forward to last night’s season opener. Funchess finished the day with one reception on four targets for nine yards. Meanwhile Benjamin led the way with six grabs on 12 targets for 91 yards and a rugged touchdown grab. Greg Olsen was the second option on Cam Newton’s radar with seven receptions on nine looks for 73 yards.
.
The Panthers threw the ball 33 times, many coming on the final drive as Cam positioned the Panthers for a game-winning field goal attempt. They ran the ball 32 times.
.
Ted Ginn, Jr. and Corey Brown caught one pass each so Funchess is still in the mix to be the third option, but that probably isn’t enough for a fantasy player on a team that relies so heavily on the ground game.
.
Funchess should be in for decent days, but he’ll remain a difficult option to rely on.
