Fantasy Baseball Box Score Breakouts – 7/8/10

Jul 9, 2010

Here’s a look at the unheralded players who played well yesterday.

Russ Ohlendorf, Pittsburgh Pirates
Ohlendorf did his part. He gave up 2 runs in 7 innings with 5 Ks. The two solo shots by Lance Berkman were enough to do him in as Roy Oswalt threw a one-hit shutout. Ohlendorf is just 1-7, but sports a solid 4.22 ERA. He has allowed just 2 runs in his last three starts (20 innings).

Andres Torres & Freddy Sanchez
Torres went 2 for 6 with 3 runs (45) and a HR (6) to raise his average to .280. He has scored at least one run in his past seven games. Sanchez went 3 for 5 with 2 runs (24) and 2 RBIs (26) to raise his average to .294. He has a hit in six straight games.

Jason Giambi, Colorado Rockies
Giambi went 4 for 4 with a run (11) and 2 RBIs (18) to raise his average to .265. He’s not much of a fantasy option in my opinion.

Brett Cecil, Toronto Blue Jays
Cecil gave up 1 run on 4 hits in 7 innings to improve to 8-5 with a 3.97 ERA. He’s given up 2 runs in  his last two starts (13 innings).

Wade Davis, Tampa Bay Rays
Davis gave up 2 runs on 4 hits in 7 innings to improve to 6-9 with a 4.69 ERA.

Randy Wells, Chicago Cubs
Wells pitched a solid game despite taking the loss. He gave up 3 runs in 7 innings with 7 Ks. He sits at 4-7 with a 4.61 ERA. He’s 1-1 in his last three starts with a 2.18 ERA.

Jason Vargas, Seattle Mariners
Vargas earned a no-decision despite giving up 1 run in 7 innings. He’s 6-4 with a 3.09 ERA.

Gerardo Parra, Arizona Diamondbacks
Parra went 4 for 5 with 2 runs and an RBI to raise his average to .274. He’s probably only useful in deeper fantasy leagues.

Potent Middle Relievers
Chris Ray, SF: 2 IP, 0 Runs, 3 Ks (20 Ks, 37 IP)
Joel Peralta, WAS:  1 IP, 0 Runs, 2 Ks (8 Ks, 8-1/3 IP)
Bill Bray, CIN:  2/3 IP, 0 Runs, 2 Ks (6 Ks, 4-2/3 IP)
Burke Badenhop, FL:  1 IP, 0 Runs, 2 Ks (16 Ks, 21-1/3 IP)
