Fantasy Baseball: Revised 2010 DH Rankings

Feb 26, 2010

The first time around I ranked 11 designated hitters. Some of those players aren’t going to hold the position in 2010 (Adam Lind) and others are simply not worthy of your fantasy rosters.

Without further ado, here is my revised DH rankings.

1.  Vladimir Guerrero – I had him third last time, but I’v reconsidered. He’s going to a great offense in a park where he’s hit extremely well.

2.  David Ortiz – He found his power stroke in June and hit 27 HRs with 78 RBIs to close out the year.

3.  Jason Kubel – His OF eligibility makes him more valuable, but you’re taking him for his long ball.

4.  Hideki Matsui – Matsui is leaving the potent lineup of the Yankees for the Angels. I think he’s well-suited for Mike Scioscia’s style.

5.  Nick Johnson – Health is always an issue with Johnson, but the man can hit. If he hits second in the Yankees’ lineup, his value will soar.  Nick also has 1B eligibility.

6.  Luke Scott – Scott is a great late-round HR pick. The trade-off is the average. Should have OF eligibility.

7.  Jose Guillen – Guillen is an excellent candidate for a 2010 rebound. He also has OF eligibility.

8.  Travis Hafner – Injuries have plagued Pronk, but he could be productive in Cleveland’s young offense.

9.  Jack Cust – He’s gonna go yard, but I’m concerned that Jake Fox will take some of his ABs.

this is a horrible list I hope you know. How is Lind not number 1? Also Kubel>Ortiz there’s no argument there.

Lind is playing OF for the Blue Jays this year.

Feel free to provide your list.

First let me point out that I expect toronto to have their OF with Snider,Wells, and Bautista. Which would leave Lind as DH.
which leaves me with the list as
    1.Lind
    2.Kubel
    3.Guerrero
4.Johnson(a .400OBP+ the yankees LHH friendly field + yankee lineup makes for a good year for Johnson.)
    5.Matsui
6.Ortiz(he had two months with his average above .250)
7.Thome(with Mauer and Morneau in front of him Thome should get alot of RBI oportunities.)
8.Damon(with a fantastic average in comerca park he should do well.)
    9.Hafner

reasons why I excluded Guillen is because the royals offense sucks.
I wasn’t sure how much playing time will receive so there’s that factor as well.

    my second note should say
I wasn’t sure how much playing time thome will receive so there’s that factor as well.

Most place I see has Lind in LF. I agree with you though, that if he were to DH, he’s #1.He played 55 games in the OF so regardless, you’re using him at OF and not at UTIL.

The only real difference we have is Papi. His average was horrible last year, but the power was there after his dismal start. He’s lost a bunch of weight and is supposedly in great shape. He’s dealt with injuries the past few years which has sapped his power. If he’s healthy, he has the potential to put up big numbers, especially in that lineup.

I like Kubel. The only thing is the Twins have a logjam. In the OF you have Young, Span, Cuddy, and Kubel. Kubel is your primary DH, but Thome will still get ABs.

I wouldn’t count on Thome. Kubel is the primary DH. Mauer is going to get some ABs at DH. Unless Morneau, Cuddy, Kubel, or Young get hurt, I’m just not sure the ABs will be there.

Damon will play some DH, but he’ll likely play plenty in LF. Again, you’re using him in the OF slot. I would rank Damon higher than Matsui, Johnson, and certainly Thome.

The Royals offense isn’t great, but the do have Billy Butler and some pieces. Even bad teams score runs.

it’s best to be conservative about what ortiz is going to do and assume he’ll regress because of his age.
you say bring up Damon and Lind talking up OF spots, why did you include Kubel at all in this list then?

and for your future lists let me throw out a name of a guy who could be a star by years end, “Julio Borbon”.

Kubel is primarily a DH. Mainly I did this list for guys like Matsui, Papi, and Vlad who only have util eligibility.

Vlad is the DH in Texas. Borbon will be in the field. I do have Borbon in my top 40 OF list.

he still is OF eligible, so his inclusion makes no sense.

    OK. The list then is

    1. Vlad
    2. Papi
    3. Matsui
    4. Pronk

cross out kubel, johnson, scott, guillen, cust because they have eligibility elsewhere
