Fantasy Draft Alert: Jacoby Ellsbury to Bat Leadoff

Mar 19, 2011

When the Red Sox signed Carl Crawford, Jacoby Ellsbury’s spot in the lineup was in question. Would Crawford bat leadoff with Ellsbury acting as a second leadoff batter in the ninth slot? Would Dustin Pedroia bat at the top of the order? If you have Jacoby Ellsbury, you will be happy to hear that Nick Cafardo tweeted that “Ellsbury likely Sox leadoff man according to Francona”. If you are having your fantasy draft in the coming days, this news should not be overlooked.
Hitting out of the leadoff spot for a powerful Red Sox lineup, Ellsbury should have no problem reaching 100 runs if he can stay healthy. I’m not sure he reaches 70 stolen bases again, but 50 is a strong possibility. There are plenty of value speed picks so don’t get too carried away, but make sure you’re drafting him as the leadoff hitter rather than a ninth hitter.
