Fantasy Football Out on a Limb Volume 3

Sep 18, 2008

Fantasy Football Out on a Limb is back for another season.  I scour the rosters to select a player who I feel will outperform a higher profile player in that given week.  I base my decisions on matchups, how the players are trending, and the ever-important hunch.  To mix things up I’ll occasionally do some two on one matchups or even pit RB or WR duos against each other.  Sometimes I’ll spot a player some points.

6 points for rushing or receiving TD
4 points for a passing TD
0.1 points per yard for rushing or receiving
0.05 points per passing yard.

Last Week
Aaron Rodgers
(30.9) over Brett Favre (13.65) WHICH I WON
Marshawn Lynch (12.7) beat Brandon Jacobs (9.5) WHICH I LOST
Steven Jackson (9.0) beat Larry Johnson (2.2) WHICH I LOST
Chad Ocho Cinco (3.7) beat Marvin Harrison (1.6) WHICH I LOST
Santonio Holmes (10.4) over T.J. Houshmandzadeh (2.6) WHICH I WON
Super Stetch:  Wes Welker (7.2) beat David Patten (5.5) WHICH I LOST

Season Record
Regular Picks:  6-4
Super Stretch Picks:  1-1
Overall:  7-5
Breakdown: QB: 2-0, RB: 3-2, WR: 2-3

J.T. O’Sullivan
over Derek Anderson
Derek Anderson hasn’t been very good this season.  He has faced Dallas and Pittsburgh though.  Well, it doesn’t get any easier when he heads into Baltimore.  They aren’t the Defense they once were, but they are still pretty good.  J.T., on the other hand, gets to follow up his strong performance with an outing against the Lions.  That should make his fantasy owners happy.

Running Backs
Maurice Jones-Drew
over Ryan Grant
MJD is palying behind an Offensive Line that is bruised and battered.  He gets some good news though as he won’t have to face Bob Sanders this week.  That makes Indy’s Defense and entirely different unit.  I expect MJD to finally get off.  Meanwhile Ryan Grant gets to face the Cowboys.  I envision a shootout that will focus more on the passing attack than the ground game.

Larry Johnson
over Darren McFadden
Call me crazy, but I’m getting back on that horse even after last week’s mess.  Atlanta may be worse off than Oakland…and he’s angry.  LJ has something to prove this week.   McFadden hits the road for Buffalo, who has played some great D.  I think they bottle Run DMC up.

Wide Receivers
Bryant Johnson
over Santonio Holmes
I’m picking Johnson as the main threat for J.T. this week.  He has to be drooling at the prospect of facing that Lion secondary.  Meanwhile Holmes will have to face the Eagles stellar Secondary with a QB that is banged up against a D that is going to bring the pressure.  Big Ben could get knocked out of this one.

Amani Toomer over Laveranues Coles
Amani gets to follow up his strong game against St. Louis with an easy matchup against Cincinnati, which should propel him to victory in this battle of aging New York wideouts.  Life won’t be as easy for Coles though, as he faces San Diego on the road.

Darren Sproles
over Chris Perry
Even if LT is good to go, you know he’s going to yield a share of carries to Sproles.  He should find running lanes vs. the Jets.  Perry, who should easily receive more carries than Sproles, will find it more difficult to get going vs. the Giants.  The Bungles are just a mess, and it’s hard to trust any of them right now.

Nice call on MJD. The Indy defense goes from good to mediocre in his absence. I like Sproles as well. HE completely energized that team with his play last week.

I like your picks this week too. Not sure about that LJ pick, but otherwise looks good
