File Under “Shut the Heck Up”

May 12, 2009

The NBA Playoffs have been pretty solid thus far. Cleveland has had the most dominating opening rounds in NBA history. The Celtics-Bulls series was one for the ages. Houston beating the Lakers without Yao Ming was stunning. However, two incidents over the weekend left me annoyed.

I’ll start with Mark Cuban.  If you have beef with Kenyon Martin, say something to him.  It is cowardly to run to his Mom and call her son a thug or a punk, or whatever he said.  Instead of personally apologizing to Kenyon and his Mom, he wrote one on his blog.  He offered K-Mart’s family a free suite should the series return to Dallas.  I like the gesture, but wouldn’t a phone call apology been the right thing to do?

Even more annoying is Ernest Provetti demanding an apology from Glen “Big Baby” Davis for, according to Provetti, “acting like a “raging animal with no regard for fans’ personal safety” following his game-winning jumper. Really? Big Baby hit the jumper on the sideline, backed up a few steps and headed towards his bench to celebrate. He brushed up against the ref and innocently bumped into Provetti’s son knocking off his hat. The kid was not knocked to the ground. Let it go. Here’s a look at the video:

Equally annoying was Davis’ lengthy celebration. Be like Barry Sanders and act like you’ve been there before.

Though I didn’t feel it was necessary, Big Baby Davis did apologize for bumping 12-year old Nicholas Provetti following his game-winning celebration.

I totally agree on both points.

Especially the dude demanding an apology…how about get your stupid kid out of the way and it won’t happen again, dolt.

And Big Baby does need to act like he’s been there before … you would have thought the Celtics just won the Finals.

I agree Les, The kids dad wrote to the NBA demanding an apology. That poor kid is gonna get ridiculed by all of his friends for being a “Big Baby” and complaining about a shove.

I can’t even pretend to understand what it feels like to hit a game-winning shot in an NBA playoff game (if NBA Live counts then I do know) so I can’t knock Davis for getting overly excited. He’s like the 5th option on a championship team so it was even more unexpected. If it was Dwight Howard who hit a shot and pushed would the dad have complained?

Some celebration is fine, but he was above and beyond what is in good taste.

All I can think of, If I was that Kid. I would be going to School the next day, Saying “It was such a cool night, I got touched by Glen “Big Baby” Davis when he was celebrating his Game winning shot.!”
