Free Agent Signings – Fantasy Perspective

Mar 1, 2009

The 49ers signed Wide Reciever Brandon Jones.  He never quite lived up to his potential in Tennessee.  Perhaps a change of scenery would do him good.  He’s not high on my list for WRs to target next year at this point.  Tennessee wasn’t exactly load at wideout, so this becomes an even bigger need for them.

The Broncos signed Running Backs Correll Buckhalter and J.J. Arrington.  It seems Josh McDaniels is sticking with the Patriots’ mantra of stocking up on talented backs.  Buckhalter could challenge for the feature tailback role and J.J. will likely be the third down back.  McDaniels also signed Jabar Gaffney.  He gives the Broncos a solid third WR to go along with Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal.

The Lions signed RB Maurice Morris from Seattle.  Mo Mo’s deal was for three years.  His fantasy value takes a hit as he goes from splitting carries with Julius Jones to backing up Kevin Smith.  T.J. Duckett could see additional carries with Morris’ departure.  They also brought in WR Bryant Johnson.  He had a decent year with San Francisco (45 receptions, 546 yards, 3 TDs).  He’s a nice compliment to Calvin Johnson.

The Vikings signed Tight End Jim Kleinsasser to an extension.  He doesn’t catch many passes, but he is one of the best blocking TEs in the game allowing Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor to pile up the yards.
