Friday Tidbits – 9/11/09

Sep 11, 2009

Grady Sizemore shut it down for the year.  Same with Jose Guillen.  Carlos Pena broke two fingers after getting hit by C.C. Sabathia finishing his season.  Fernando Rodney got a three-game suspension.  Corey Hart came off the DL.  So did Carlos Beltran.  Derek Jeter tied Lou Gehrig for the most hits for a Yankee.  Torii Hunter won the Branch Rickey Award.  He is just a great person.

Favre’s wallet is $10K lighter after getting fined for his crackback block.  The Bills fired OC Turk Schonert.  Kevin Jones will miss the year.  The Bills cut Dominic Rhodes.  The Giants cut David “F’n” Tyree.  The Saints cut Joey Harrington.  The Raiders cut Jeff Garcia.  Tampa dealt Luke McCown to Jacksonville for a pick.  The Patriots traded Richard Seymour to Oakland for a 2011 first round pick.  He still hasn’t reported to Oakland though.  Matthew Stafford will start for the Lions.  Shawne Merriman got himself in a stick situation.  We’ll have to see how it plays out, but it doesn’t look good.  In an odd turn of events, it appears the Broncos and Brandon Marshall are discussing an extension.  Favre said he wouldn’t put his streak before the team.  Pittsburgh beat Tennessee in OT to open the year.  The Jets could be in some hot water for not listing Favre on the injury report last year.  If it were the Patriots, there would be a lot more noise.  The Vikings cut Bobby Wade and signed Greg Lewis.

The Wolves signed PG Ramon Sessions.  Allen Iverson will play for Memphis next year.  C.J. Watson re-signed with Golden State. The Timberwovles kept dealing players by sending Darius Songaila and Bobby Brown to New Orleans for Antonio Daniels.  I wouldn’t get too cozy if I was Antonio.  Some guy named Michael Jordan will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Columbus signed Derick Brassard.  Boston signed Coach Claude Julien.  Anaheim signed Steve Eminger.  Dany Heatley is going to San Jose, Patrick Marleau is going to the Kings, and Alexander Frolov and Jarret Stoll is going to Ottawa in a three-team deal.

Oregon suspended LaGarrette Blount for the year.  #6 Ohio State barely beat Navy.  #22 Iowa narrowly defeast Northern Iowa.  #9 Oklahoma State beat #13 Georgia.  #20 BYU beat #3 Oklahoma.  #5 Alabama beat #7 Virginia Tech.  Sam Bradford (shoulder) will miss a couple of weeks.  Oklahoma’s Jermaine Gresham and Florida’s Andre Dubose will miss the rest of the year with injuries.  #3 USC meets #8 Ohio State and #18 Notre Dame takes on Michigan this weekend.

Samford’s Jim Griffin died of an apparent heart condition.  Seton Hall Coach Bobby Gonzalez got a contract extension.

Steve Stricker won the Deutsche Bank Championship.  Suzann Peterson won the Canadien Open.  Jeff Sluman won the Walmart First Tee Open.  Alexander Noren won the European Masters.  Troy Merritt won the Mexico Open.

Kasey Kahne won at  Atlanta Motor Speedway.  Kevin Harvick won the Nationwide race.

That concludes the Tidbits. As always feel free to add any stories you liked this week in sports or discuss any of the stories I mentioned.  Be sure to check out my Links Page for some great sites
