Friday Tidbits 10/26/07

Oct 26, 2007

J.D. Drew got thing going early with a grand slam in Game 6. Curt Schilling settled down to go 7 strong innings as the Red Sox evened the series. Paul Byrd was linked to HGH before Game 7. The Sox finished off the comeback to advance to the World Series to face Colorado. Hank Steinbrenner fired back at Joe Torre. Sorry Hank. You just made it worse. I guess the apple (or in this case jackass) doesnt’ fall far from the tree (bigger jackass). Tony LaRussa is returning to St. Louis for two more years. Trey Hillman was named Kansas City’s new manager. Tim Wakefield was left of Boston’s World Series roster. The Red Sox smoked Colorado in Game 1 13-1. Dustin Pedroia led off with a home run. Manny, Papi, and Lugo each had three hits. Youk and Manny scored 3 runs. Beckett struck out 9 while allowing 1 run in 7 innings. Game 2 was much more competitive, but the result was the same. Another Boston victory. Curt Schilling got the win, but Hideki Okajima was amazing in relief. Matt Holliday had four hits, but got picked off of first in the 8th. Mike Lowell drove in the game winner. The Series moves to Colorado.

Tom Brady stayed on fire as he threw 6 more TDs. This is getting ridiculous. He has 27 TDs through 7 games. That’s Tecmo football numbers. The Pats remain unbeaten at 7-0. Indy kept pace by defeating Jacksonville on MNF. Jacksonville lost QB David Garrard for a month with a sprained ankle. Miami remains winless. St. Louis joined them. New Orleans won again. Rob Bironas kicked 8 FGs in a Tennessee win over Houston in a thriller. Another reason why a fantasy football league without kickers would be sweet. Can you imagine to losing to that? Priest Holmes made his return. Kenny Watson had 130 yards and 3 TDs filling in for Rudi Johnson. I think he may be better than Rudi at this point. Ronnie Brown was lost for the season when he tore his ACL trying to make a tackle. Thanks Cleo. The Chargers were forced to practice in Arizona because of the fires. Chris Henry was cleared to return to practice with Cincinnati. He has two more games on his suspension. Hopefully he doesn’t get arrested again before he’s free to play. Steven Jackson should finally return to action. Richard Seymour returned to practice for New England. Wait, they are 7-0 without one of their best defensive players. Uh oh league. Byron Leftwich had ankle surgery. He’s soft like butter. Rod Smith returned to practice for Denver. Zach Thomas got whiplash from an accident last week and will miss this week’s game in London. The Vikings locked up their 3rd best player (behind AP and Kevin Williams), punter Chris Kluwe with a six-year extension. Alex Smith will return to action this week.

Columbus G Pascal Leclaire shutout Buffalo last Friday and St. Louis on Thursday. Manny Fernandez recorded a shutout of the Rangers for Boston. Pittsburgh’s Marc-Andre Fleury shutout the Rangers. Phoenix got a shutout from Alex Auld against Anaheim. LA King G Jason LaBarbera shutout Nashville. Nashville’s Dan Ellis returned the favor by shutting out Atlanta. Henrik Lundqvist shutout New Jersey for the Rangers. G Ray Emery returned for Ottawa. He won his debut. Atlanta put goalie Kari Lehtonen on the IR with a groin injury. Toronto’s Darcy Tucker is out with a knee injury. New York Islander D Bryan Berard will miss a couple weeks with a groin injury. Edmonton D Sheldon Souray is out with a shoulder injury. The Rangers will be without F Ryan Callahan because of a knee injury. Olli Jokinen is now Florida’s career point and goal leader. The Wild dropped their first regulation game to Calgary.

Josh Howard was suspended two games for fighting with Brad Miller. Later he sprained his wrist. Denver suspended J.R. Smith for three games for misconduct. Allen Houston gave up his comeback attempt. Six refs were disciplined in the gambling scandal. Charlotte’s Adam Morrison tore his knee and will probably miss the entire season. No word on how his hair or mustache is doing. The Timberwolves shook up their lineup sending the selfish Ricky Davis and Mark Blount to Miami for Antoine Walker. I’m just surprised McHale traded with someone other than Boston. Lamar Odom could miss the start of the season with a shoulder injury. Kevin Durant sprained his ankle.

#4 LSU beat #17 Auburn on a last second play. Vanderbilt shocked #6 South Carolina. #7 Kentucky was dropped by #15 Florida. UCLA upset #12 Cal. #14 USC squeaked by Notre Dame 38-0. #16 Missouri destroyed #24 Texas Tech. Alabama crushed #21 Tennessee. Pittsburgh upset #23 Cincinnati. Georgia Tech RB Tashard Choice is out with a knee injury. #2 Boston College stormed back to defeat #8 Virginia Tech 14-10 on Thursday. They scored their two TDs in the final 2 minutes of the game. Big games this weekend include #1 Ohio State vs. #25 Penn State, #4 Arizona State vs. #21 Cal, #5 Oregon vs. #12 USC, #7 West Virginia vs. 5-2 Rutgers, #9 Kansas vs. 6-2 Texas A&M, #10 South Florida vs. #23 UConn and #11 Florida vs. #18 Georgia.

Nevada F Richie Phillips is out a month with a stress fracture to his leg. Pepperdine kicked G Kingsley Costain off the team for violating a school policy. Pitt G Darnell Dodson is transferring to Miami Dade College. He had eligibility issues. UNC is the preseason #1.
