Friday Tidbits – 10/31/08
The Phillies took Game 3 of the World Series and a 2-1 series lead. Chase Utley and Ryan Howard hit back-to-back HRs. J.C. Romero pitched 1-1/3 scoreless Innings to earn the Win. Eric Hinske replaced Cliff Floyd on Tampa’s roster. You knew Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard weren’t going to be held down forever. They busted out in Game 4 to give the Phillies a 3-1 series lead. Joe Blanton pitched well and hit a solo HR. Kevin Youkilis and Aramis Ramirez won the Hank Aaron Award, which is determined by fans voting for the best offensive players in their leagues. More proof that fans shouldn’t be allowed to vote on anything. Game 5 was suspended on Monday because of the weather. Game 5 was cancelled on Tuesday because of the weather. Almost as bad as the weather has been the umpiring. The Angels picked up options on Vladimir Guerrero and John Lackey. The Phillies won the World Series finishing up the last 3-1/2 Innings on Wednesday night. J.C. Romero got the Win. Brad Lidge remained perfect in Save opportunites. Cole Hamels won the MVP. Milwaukee hired Ken Macha. Manny, Mark Teixeira, and Ben Sheets filed for Free Agency. Kansas City got Mike Jacobs from Florida for Leo Nunez. The White Sox didn’t pick up Griffey’s option. Detroit didn’t pick up Edgar Renteria’s option.
The Bulls picked up options on Tyrus Thomas, Joakim Noah, and Thabo Sefolosha. Portland picked up options for Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Greg Oden. What a good collection of young talent. Golden State signed a two-year extension with Don Nelson. The Knicks gave Patrick Ewing’s son the boot. Toronto picked up Andrea Bargnani’s option. Houston’s Aaron Brooks (ankle) will miss a couple of weeks. The Celtics open their title defense with a victory over the Cavs. Paul Pierce was the Big One just like in the playoffs. Danny Ainge got an extension before the game. Deron Williams missed Utah’s opener. Greg Oden sprained his foot. He didn’t even score a point. He’ll miss 2-4 weeks. Shades of Bill Walton? Phoenix didn’t score 120 points, but they won for Terry Porter. Mike D’Antoni won his debut with the Knicks. They did score 120. Larry Brown lost his debut with Charlotte. The Lakers extended Andrew Bynum’s contract. Jason Maxiel signed an extension with Detroit.
Florida D Bryan Allen is on the shelf following knee surgery. The Flyers will be without Daniel Briere (abdominal) for a few weeks. Marian Gaborik landed on the IR. Detroit will be without Johan Frazen (knee) for a month. Columbus put G Pascal Leclaire on the IR. Alexander Ovechkin’s consecutive games streak ended at 203 as he went to Russia to be with his grandfather. Vancouver’s Rick Rypien (sports hernia) will be out a while. Ottawa re-signed Daniel Alfredsson.

The Sooners had 55 at halftime. Josh Freeman had 478 passing yards for K-State. #7 Georgia beat #13 LSU. #8 Texas Tech destroyed #23 Kansas 63-21. Graham Harrell had 386 passing yards and 5 TDs. Jimmy Young had 226 receiving yards and 3 TDs as #14 TCU pounded Wyoming. #15 Missouri blanked Colorado 58-0. Didn’t Colorado use to be good? Chase Daniel had 302 yards and 5 TDs. Louisville upset #16 South Florida. Rutgers whooped up on #17 Pitt behind Mike Teel’s 361 passing yards and 6 TDs. Kenny Britt caught three of them. Virginia upset #18 Georgia Tech. Indiana upset #22 Northwestern. Ty Willingham is out in Washington. North Texas had 15 players fail a drug test. Big games this week: #1 Texas vs. #7 Texas Tech, #6 Georgia vs. #8 Florida, #15 Florida State vs. 6-2 Georgia Tech, #17 Minnesota vs. 6-2 Northwestern, #24 Oregon vs. 5-2 Cal, and #25UConn vs. 5-2 West Virginia. Thursday upsets continued with Cincinnati taking down #23 South Florida.
Cleveland State gave Coach Gary Waters a five-year extension. Arizona lost recruits Abdul Gaddy, Solomon Hill and Mike Moser after Lute Olson stepped down. Gaddy signed with Washington. Word is Lute had a stroke recently. Fred Glass will be Indiana’s new AD. Nevada’s Brandon Fields had charges dropped in an alleged shoplifting scheme. North Carolina is the preseason #1. Tyler Hansbrough hurt his shin.
Cameron Beckman won the Frys.com Open. John Cook won the AT&T Championship. Helen Alfredsson won the Grand China Air tournament. Sergio Garcia won the Castello Masters. Jamie Sadlowski’s 418 yard drive won him the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship and $250K. Cameron Peck and Victoria Tanco were named the Rolex Junior Players of the Year. Hunter Mahan beat Anthony Kim to win the Kiwi Challenge. John Daly got bombed at Hooters and then was taken to detox.
Roger Federer beat David Nalbandian in the ATP Davidoff Swiss Indoors Basel. Andy Murray beat Andrey Golubev in the ATP Tour St. Petersburg Open. Robin Soderling beat Julien Benneteau in the ATP Grand Prix de Tennis de Lyon. Elena Dementieva beat Caroline Wozniacki in the WTA FORTIS Championships. Ana Ivanovic beat Vera Zvonareva in the WTA Generali Ladies Linz.
