Friday Tidbits – 12/5/08

Joey Porter got fined $7500 for running his mouth against the Patriots.  Carolina gave Chris Gamble a six-year extension.  Plaxico Burress shot himself in the leg.  He was charged with illegal weapons possession.  His attorney was quoted as saying “He has 35 million reasons to come back to court” regarding his bail.  Either he lives in a cave or he’s even dumber than Plaxico, but that line did not go over well for T.O. last  year.  The Giants suspended him four games.  Nathan Vasher (hand) landed on the IR.  Sammy Knight (hip) will join him.  Sean Taylor was inducted to the Redskins Ring of Honor.  Now Derek Anderson (knee) will miss the rest of the year.  San Fran beat Buffalo on the road.  Baltimore blitzed Cincinnati.  They truly have quit.  Mark Clayton had a monster game for the Ravens.  Indy barely beat Cleveland.  DeAngelo Williams had 4 TDs as Carolina beat Green Bay.  Miami won to move to 7-5.  Tampa beat New Orleans despite Reggie Bush’s return.  No Plax, no problem as the G-Men beat the Skins.  Atlanta continued the woeful season for San Diego.  KC beat Oakland in a battle of puke.  Pittsburgh pounded New England.  Denver upset the J-E-T-S.  The Vikings beat the Bears to take over first in the NFC North.  Bernard Berrian scored on a 99 yard pass.  Detroit got another castoff.  This time it was Keary Colbert.  Anyone get the feeling the Lions are like the Misfits from the Christmas animation?  Steve Slaton dominated as Houston beat Jacksonville.  Steve Smith was robbed at gunpoint.  Too bad he didn’t have Plax’s gun.  If the season wasn’t bad enough for San Diego they are releasing a Ryan Leaf movie to open up that wound.  Kevin Williams, Pat Williams, Deuce McAllister, Will Smith, Charles Grant and Bryan Pittman were suspended four games for taking diuretics.  The Williams Wall is trying to contest it.  The NFLPA is trying as well.  Gary Brackett will miss two games for the Colts.  Cincy signed Victor Hobson.  The Chargers whooped the Raiders on Can’t See TV.  Shaun Ellis got pinched for weed.

The Knicks suspended Stephon Marbury a game for refusing to play.  Chris Duhon dished out a Knick franchise record 22 assists.  David Lee and Dwight Howard had 30+ points and 20+ rebounds.  Corey Brewer will miss the year with a knee injury.  McGrady (knee) will miss three weeks.  Rajon Rondo messed around and got a Triple-Double.  Toronto fired Sam Mitchell.  Elton Brand strained his hamstring.  Josh Smith returned from his ankle sprain.  Former NBA-er Rodney Rogers was left paralyzed following an ATV accident.

Dallas traded Lauri Tukonen to Tampa Bay for Andrew Hutchinson.  Carolina fired Peter Laviolette was and made Paul Maurice the new Coach.  Joe Sakic (back) will miss six weeks.  Danny Briere (groin) will miss a month.  Sean Avery got suspended for a Sloppy Seconds remark.  Buffalo put Patrick Kaleta on IR.

Shutouts:  Anaheim’s Jonas Hiller vs. Chicago, Washington’s Jose Theodore vs. Montreal, Columbus’ Steve Mason vs. Washington, Florida’s Craig Anderson vs. the Rangers, Nashville’s Pekka Rinne vs. Buffalo, Minnesota’s Niklas Backstrom vs. St. Louis

Hat Tricks:  Phoenix’s Martin Hanzal vs. Toronto

Washington’s Tim Redding had surgery on his foot.  Houston signed Mike Hampton.  Boston signed Dustin Pedroia to a six-year, $40.5 million extension.  Russell Branyan signed a one-year deal with Seattle.  San Francisco signed Bob Lowry to bolster their pen.  They also signed Edgar Renteriato a two-year deal.  St. Louis signed Trever Miller.  The White Sox traded Javier Vazquez to Atlanta for four players.   San Diego traded Khalil Green to the Cardinals for two players.  Boston signed Japan’s Junichi Tazawa.

Lane Kiffin agreed to be Tennessee’s next Coach.  Word is Monty is joining him.  #9 Boise State hung 61 on Fresno State.  #1 Alabama blanked Auburn.  #3 Oklahoma won a shootout over Okie State.  Sam Bradford threw 4 TDs and ran in another.  #4 Florida put the hurting on #20 Florida State.  #22 Georgia Tech beat #11 Georgia despite 407 yards and 5 TDs from Matthew Stafford. Kansas outlasted #13 Missouri.  #23 Oregon pounded #17 Oregon State despite 5 TDs from Lyle Moevao.  Clemson signed Dabo Swinney to become their next Coach after having success as Interim Coach.  New Mexico State fired Hal Mumme.  USC is giving up a pair of time outs to be able to wear their home jerseys as well against UCLA.  Tommy Tuberville is done in Auburn.  Big games this weekend:  #1 Alabama vs. #4 Florida, #2 Oklahoma vs. #20 Missouri, and #17 Boston College vs. #25 Virginia Tech.
#12 Tennessee beat #16 Georgetown.  #13 Oklahoma knocked off #9 Purdue behind Blake Griffin’s 18 points, 21 rebounds.  Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody is out with pneumonia.  Kyle McAlarney stepped up with 32 points in a win over Furman.  Dayton upset #15 Marquette.  Western Kentucky stunned #3 Louisville.  #1 UNC hung 116 on UNC-Asheville.  #10 Gonzaga beat #12 Tennessee.  #22 Wisconsin beat Virginia Tech despite 30 points from A.D. Vassallo.  #2 UConn pounded Delaware State as Hasheem Thabeet ripped 17 rebounds.  Miami suspended Eddie Rios for violating rules.  #4 Duke beat #10 Purdue.  Notre Dame pounded South Dakota behind Ryan Ayer’ 35 points.  Ohio State beat #22 Miami.  #1 UNC pounde #12 Michigan State.  #3 Pitt beat Duquesne behind DeJuan Blair’s 17 rebounds.  Tyler Smith messed around and got a triple-double as #13 Tennessee.  It was the first ever for Tennessee.  It was Bruce Pearl’s 400th career win.  #20 Syracuse beat Cornell despite 33 points from Ryan Wittman.  #8 Texas beat #9 UCLA behind A.J. Abrams’ 31 points. 

Rod Pampling won the Australian Masters.  Sweden’s Robert Karlsson and Henrik Stenson won the World Cup over Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez and Pablo Larrazabal.  The International Team won the Lexus Cup.  K.C. Choi became the first Korean player to win a Skins Game.  Adam Scott got hurt surfing and had to withdraw from the Australian PGA Championship.

    35 Million reasons. Classic. I truly begin to tire of athletes who really do seem to think their monetary success is somehow demonstrable of their societal contribution. Plax also had 35 Million reasons not to shoot himself…or to carry a concealed weapon out to a night club…
