Friday Tidbits – 6/12/09

The Lakers beat Orlando in OT to take a 2-0 series lead.   San Antonio’s Fabricio Oberto underwent a procedure to fix his arrhythmia.  The 76ers sent Reggie Evans to Toronto for Jason Kapono.  Orlando beat the Lakers to take Game 3.  Sacramento named Paul Westphal as their next Coach.  Jermaine O’Neal and Yakhouba Diawara will remain with Miami next year after they exercised their player options.  Tommy Heinsohn won the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award.  The Lakers beat Orlando in OT to take Game 4 and a 3-1 series lead.  Check that.  The Magic beat themselves to give the Lakers the game.  Orlando could be up 3-1, but just couldn’t deliver.  Dwight Howard missed Free Throws did them in.  He got a Triple-Double, which is nice, but a W would have been better.


Detroit beat Pittsburgh in Game 5 to take a 3-2 series lead.  Atlanta extended Marty Reasoner’s contract.  Anaheim did the same with Mike Brown.  Brent Sutter resigned as New Jersey’s Coach.  Pittsburgh beat Detroit in Game 6 to even the series at 3-3.  Dallas fired Coach Dave Tippett and hired Marc Crawford.


Fausto Carmona was sent to the Minors.  Travis Hafner returned from the DL.  Carlos Zambrano returned from his suspension to win his 100th career game.  Not only did Zack Greinke lose, he gave up 7 Runs (5 Earned) in the process.  J.J. Putz went on the DL.  Cesar Izturis had an appendectomy.  Roy Halladay became the first 10-game winner of the year.  Casey Kotchman went on the DL.  Josh Hamilton is going to miss four to six weeks following surgery on his abdomen.  Brandon McCarthy went to the DL as well for the Rangers.  Jose Contreras won the Comeback battle vs. Jeremy Bonderman.  Brad Lidge went on the DL.  Texas picked up Manager Ron Washington’s option for 2010. Washington drafted Stephen Strasburg #1. Bartolo Colon went on the DL.  Boston made it 8-0 against the Yankees this year.


Adam Vinatieri had hip surgery.  Cleveland signed George Foster.  Dan Morgan retired again.  I know you love the game, but your head can’t take it.  Corey McIntyre’s exposure charges were dropped.  Santonio Holmes’ possession charge was dropped.  The Jets signed Mark Sanchez.  Donovan McNabb restructured his contract.  It wasn’t an extension he was looking for, but he got a little more coin.  Rex Grossman signed with Houston. 


Miami’s Dwayne Collins, LSU’s Tasmin Mitchell, and Villanova’s Scottie Reynolds  will return to school after testing the NBA Draft waters.   Greg Vetrone will replace Tom Green as Fairleigh Dickinson’s Coach.  Tim Floyd stepped down as USC Coach as the program is surrounded by questions about NCAA violations.  Illinois F Mike Davis broke his ankle.  Coach Ralph Willard is leaving Holy Cross to become Rick Patino’s Assistant Coach.


Boston College signed QB David Shinskie.  He’s 25 and played Minor League Baseball for six seasons.  Nick Montana is going to Washington. Alabama has to vacate victories from 2005-2007.

 


Roger Federer won the French Open.  It was his record-tying (with Pete Sampras) 14th Grand Slam title.  Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Dinara Safina to win the Women’s Final.

Summer Bird won the Belmont Stakes.

Tony Stewart won the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at Pocono Raceway.  Kyle Busch won the Nationwide Race.

Tiger Woods won the Memorial.  Jeppe Huldahl won the Wales Open.  In-Kyung Kim won the LPGA State Farm Classic.  Bernhard Langer won the Triton Financial Classic.  Phil was two under in his return in the St. Jude Classic.  Brian Gay was the opening day leader at six under.

    Zack Greinke pretty much destroyed my “does he have a shot at 1.12 ERA” theory with that one outing … I think his ERA went up to like 1.55 or something like that, so it will be near-impossible for him to get it back down below 1.12, but I still hope he can keep it under 2.00 and win about 25 games this year.

    Maybe Verlander can the way he’s pitching. Tough for Greinke on a bad team.

    Yeah, I should have never jinxed him …. for some reason I keep forgetting he’s on the Royals …. lol

    Verlander has a shot too …. dude has been a beast as of late.
