Friday Tidbits 8/1/08

Big Papi came back, but Joba was awesome as the Yanks won.  The Yanks traded Minor Leaguers for RP Damaso Marte and RF Xavier Nady.  The Dodgers got Casey Blake from Cleveland for a couple of Minor Leaguers.  Brandon Webb picked up his 1000th Strikeout.  Kevin Millwood, Chipper Jones, Scott Podsednik, Pedro Feliz, Adam LaRoche, Todd Jones, and Tim Hudson all landed on the DL.  Gerald Laird and Roy Oswalt returned.  Dustin McGowan had season-ending shoulder surgery.  Brad Ziegler set the record for most scoreless Innings to start a career.   for Casey Kotchman a Minor Leaguer.  The Yankees traded Kyle Farnsworth to Texas for Ivan Rodriguez.  Chris Carpenter returned.  Florida got Arthur Rhodes from Seattle for a Minor Leaguer.  Ken Griffey, Jr. was dealt to the White Sox for Nick Maset and Danny Richar.  The big news though is Manny Ramirez is going to the Dodgers, Jason Bay is going to Boston, Andy LaRoche, Bryan Morris, Craig Hansen, and Brandon Moss will go to Pittsburgh.

The Cowboys sent Terry Glenn packing.  Look for him to land in Miami.  The Raiders cut LaMont Jordan. Asante Samuel hurt his hammy.  Devin Hester signed a four-year deal with Chicago.  Marshawn Lynch won’t be suspended for his Hit & Run.  Chad Johnson and Plax have missed practice with ankle injuries.  Ryan Grant is holding out.  Brett Favre filed his reinstatement papers.  Terence Newman will miss a couple of weeks with a groin injury.  Reggie Williams is having his knee scoped.  Chris Henry will be suspended for the first four games of the year.  Tennessee cut Mike Williams.  Steven Jackson is still holding out.  Anquan Boldin will have an MRI on his hamstring. Jeff Garcia hurt his calf.

The Wolves re-signed Ryan Gomes. The Lakers re-signed Sasha Vujacic.  Shockingly Golden State is in the news again.  This time they signed C Andris Biedrins to a six-year deal.  The Hawks signed F Maurice Evans.  Kwame Brown signed with the Pistons.  The Clippers signed Ricky Davis.  The Knicks traded Renaldo Balkman to the Nuggets for Taureen Green, Bobby Jones, and a draft pick.  Then the Knicks waived them.Royal Ivey signed with the Sixers. Emeka Okafor signed a six-year, $72 million deal with Charlotte.  The Sixers signed Kareem Rush.  The Bad Ref Tim Donaghy got 15 months in the slammer.  The Kings dealt Ron Artest to Houston for Bobby Jackson, Donte Greene and a first round pick.  Luol Deng signed a six-year deal with the Bulls.  Nenad Krstic will play in Russia next year.  Brian Skinner signed with the Clippers. 

Colorado signed RW Marek Svatos.  The Wild re-signed Pierre-Marc Bouchard to a five-year deal worth over $20 million.  They also cut Mark Parrish.  Boston basically cut RW Glenn Murray.  Washington signed D Shaone Morrison to a one-year deal.  Tampa signed rookie Steven Stamkos.  Detroit signed Valtteri Filpuppa to a five-year deal.  Nashville signed C Jerred Smithson to a two-year deal.  Edmonton  made Kevin Lowe President of Hockey Operations and Steve Tambellini  GM.  Ottawa signed RW Antoine Vermette.  Columbus signed G Pascal Leclaire. 

Arkansas WR Marques Wade got popped for a DUI.  He nearly hit a cop car. He got suspended along with LB Freddy Burton, who also drove drunk.  Lecorn had a drug possession charge dropped.  Jerrell Powe has been ruled eligible for Ole Miss.  DT Jarrell Miller has left UConn.  Penn State kicked DLs Chris Baker and Phil Taylor off the team.  South Carolina reinstated QB Stephen Garcia. 

Jordan Crawford is transferring from Indiana to Xavier.  West Virginia’s Joe Mazzulla and Cameron Thoroughman were arrested for underage drinking and fighting with cops.  Memphis reported a possible rule violation.   Illinois sent Jamar Smith packing.

Kyle Busch won the NASCAR Nationwide Series at the O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis. Jimmie Johnson won the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard.
Chez Revie won the RBC Canadian Open by three strokes over Billy Mayfair.  Bruce Vaughan won the British Senior Open. Helen Alfredsson beat Na Yeon Choi to take the LPGA’s Evian Masters.  Bill Lunde won the Nationwide Tour’s Children’s Hospital Invitational.  Mikael Lundberg won the Russian Open.  Cameron Peck won the U.S. Junior Amateur championship.
Rafael Nadal beat Nicolas Kiefer in the ATP Masters Series Rogers Masters.  Dinara Safina beat Flavia Pennetta in the WTA East West Bank Classic.  Sara Errani beat Anabel Medina Garrigues in the WTA Banka Koper Slovenia Open.
