Friday Tidbits 8/31/07
That dogfighter officially made his plea. He apologized. Blah, blah blah. Atlanta is going after $20 million of his guaranteed money. Lance Briggs was charged with leaving the scene of the accident. Left behind was a $350 K Lamborghini. I guess Goodell’s message is at least half being heard. Although it didn’t stop the stupid behavior, at least the players are cognizant there are consequences for it. Asante Samuel joined the Patriots in camp. The Vikings pathetic QB situation got a little better when they added veteran Kelly Holcomb. The Jags signed LB Chris Claiborne. Corey Simon signed with Tennessee. Tim Couch admitted to using HGH while trying to revive his career. Sinsinnati’s Frostee Rucker received a one game suspension from the league for bad behavior. NFL kicks off next Thursday.
Ken Griffey, Jr. finally hit home run #591 & 592. I should have called him out sooner. Gary Sh*ffield landed on the DL with a shoulder injury. Houston fired Manager Phil Garner and GM Tim Purpura. Aaron Boone is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. At least he didn’t hurt it playing basketball this time. The pathetic Twins hit into a triple play in an important matchup with first place Cleveland. Precious. The Yanks got bombed 16-0. It didn’t seem to matter as they swept the Red Sox. Alfonso Soriano returned to the Cubs lineup. The Dodgers picked Esteban Loiza up off of waivers. [url= http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/JJDidier/]JJDidier wanted to point out that Cabrera and Ramirez went yard in the same game. No, not Florida’s version, but Cleveland’s. The pathetic Twins broke ground on their new ballpark. It was delayed because of the bridge collapse. The snake Bud S*lig was there. He tried to contract the Twins. I wouldn’t have invited him.
Team USA is rolling. Yi Jianlian finally signed with Milwaukee. The Celtics added G/F James Posey to their depleted roster. You think Mark Cuban looks geeky now? Wait until you see him on Dancing with the Stars. Of course, if you’re watching that…well, you might relate with Cuban’s geekiness. Not to make light out of Eddie Griffin’s death, but former Seton Hall teammate Marcus Toney-El said “I guess heaven needed a power forward”. Dude, that line was used already for Phil Rizzuto when Steinbrenner said “Heaven must have needed a shortstop”. Get you own material. Rafer Alston was charged with stabbing a man. Kevin Martin signed a five-year extension with Sacramento. Ruben Patterson signed with the Clippers. Just what Michael Vick wanted. Ron Artest came to his defense. Charlotted re-signed Jeff McInnis.
Anaheim re-signed LW Chris Kunitz for four years at $14.9 million. G Ed Belfour is leaving the NHL for the Swedish Elite League. Jussi Jokinen signed a two-year deal with Dallas.
The college football season kicked off. #2 LSU pounded Mississippi State 45-0. #10 Louisville destroyed Murray State 73-10. Brian Brohm took the early Heisman lead throwing for 375 yards and 4 TDs. #16 Rutgers (38-3 over Buffalo) and #24 Boise State (56-7 over Weber State) continue their winning ways from last year. While, it’s great college football is back, ESPN’s hype machine is way overboard. I wonder why I don’t watch that station anymore. The game of the weekend is #12 Cal vs. #15 Tennessee. #9 Virginia Tech will have an emotional opener as they will honor the victims from last year’s tragedy. USC RB Emmanuel Moody is transferring to Florida. Florida T Phil Trautwein will be out 6-8 weeks with a stress facture.
Nevada’s PG Lyndale Burleson was declared academically ineligible for the fall semester. Robert Mitchell is transferring from Duquesne. Arkansas F Sonny Weems broke his hand.
That concludes the Tidbits. As always, feel free to add any stories you liked this week in sports or discuss any of the stories I mentioned.
