Friday Tidbits 9/14/07

Sep 14, 2007

What a weekend for NFL action. Randy Moss (183 yards) had a monster game for NE. Chris Brown (175 yards) was great as Tennessee upset Jacksonville. Brett Favre tied John Elway for the most career wins as Green Bay upset Philly. Houston drilled Kansas City. Wonder if Atlanta wishes they kept Matt Schaub? Detroit won a game. LT ran for another score..ho hum. He did pass for another one too. Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch, and Calvin Johnson all had impressive NFL debuts. Shaun Alexander broke 100 yards and had a score. Still think he’s a bust TWOMINUTEDRILL? Romomania is back after he tossed 4 TDs and ran for another. JaMarcus Russell finally signed with Oakland. Chicago S Mike Brown suffered his annual season-ending injury early this year. Joining him is NT Dusty Dvoracek. Orlando Pace will also miss the season. New England got pinched for videotaping NYJ play calls. That’s just dirty. Belichick did an Giambiesque apology. The Pats got fined $250 K. Belichick got fined $500K. If they make the playoffs they lose a 1st round pick. If they miss the playoffs they lose a 2nd & a 3rd.. Cleveland traded Charlie Frye to Seattle. Washington signed Reche “I cost the Patriots a Super Bowl Berth” Caldwell. Tampa Bay cut David B*ston. The Ravens will be without Ogden this weekend. Jax K Josh Scobee will be out 3-6 weeks. Terry Glenn went under the knife again. None of this matters though. What matters in football this week si that Buffalo’s Kevin Everett, who injured his neck last week, was able to move his arms and legs.

A-Rod smashed home runs #50 & 51 as the Yankees rolled. Wonder why the Yankee fans aren’t booing now. He also hit HR #52, his fifth game in a row with a homer. Trevor Hoffman picked up his 1000th strikeout. Greg Maddux didn’t walk a batter for his 9th consecutive start. Jay Gibb*ns is the latest name to come out in connection with steroids and HGH. Milwaukee became the third team ever to hit three straight home runs to start a game. Josh Beckett and Chien-Ming Wang picked up their 18th wins. Jeremy Bonderman is shutting it down for the year. I can’t help but sing “Jeremy’s broken” in my head. Surprisingly the White Sox extended Ozzie Guillen’s contract through 2012. Scott Rolen shut it down for the year. Troy Gl*us is out for the year because of a foot injury. The Phillies turned their 2nd triple play of the season. Jim Thome his HR #499. Terry Ryan stepped down from his post with the Twins. David Wells improved to 3-0 with the Dodgers. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Some great news in the battle of PEDs. MLB should have a blood test in 2008 to detect HGH. Problem is the MLBPA will never approve.

40 year old rookie C Greg Oden is having knee surgery. I’m not sure if it’s arthritis setting in. He’s expected to miss half the season or more because of his Microfracture surgery. Shades of Sam Bowie and Bill Walton? Portland may be cursed. 76er C Samuel Dalembert has a stress fracture in his left foot foot. Philly dealt C Steven Hunter and F Bobby Jones to Denver for F Reggie Evans and the rights to F Ricky Sanchez. New Jersey signed F Malik Allen. Houston’s Justin Reed had drug charges dropped. Dallas signed Devin Harris to a five year, $42 million extension. LeBron had Lasik surgery.

New York Islander G Mike Dunham is hanging up his skates for a clipboard as he will become the team’s new goalie coach. Vancouver D Aaron Miller is having abdominal surgery. Toronto’s Mark Bell was suspended 15 games for drunk driving and hit-and-run no-contest pleas.

#2 LSU opened eyes with its 48-7 mauling of #9 Virginia Tech. #5 Oklahoma pound Miami 51-13. Sooner fans said they’d pound them by three scrores. I didn’t buy it. Here’s me eating crow. #7 Texas beat #19 TCU 34-13. #14 Penn State pounded Notre Dame 31-10. #20 Hawaii escaped La Tech 45-44 behind Colt Brennan’s 548 yards and 4 TDs (plus a rushing TD). South Carolina knocked off #11 Georgia 16-12. South Florida stunned #17 Auburn 26-23. #22 Boise State had their 14 game winning streak snapped by Washington 24-10. Oregon proved that Michigan sucks right now. The College Football landscape sure has changed. Notre Dame, Michigan, and Miami are all struggling and changing QBs. Big games this weekend include #1 USC vs. #14 Nebraska, #5 Florida vs. #22 Tennessee, #15 Georgia Tech vs. #21 Boston College, and sucky Michigan vs. sucky Notre Dame.

Oklahoma State C Kenny Cooper is transferring. He’s looking for more PT. NC State freshman Johnny Thomas will miss the entire season with a knee injury.

That concludes the Tidbits. As always, feel free to add any stories you liked this week in sports or discuss any of the stories I mentioned.
