Friday Tidbits – 9/19/08

Sep 19, 2008

K-Rod broke Bobby Thigpen’s record with his 58th Save.  Carlos Zambrano threw a no-hitter.  Evan Longoria returned for Tampa.  Ned Yost got canned in the middle of a playoff race.  They lost for Dale Sveum too.  Derek Jeter broke Lou Gehrig’s record for most Hits at Yankee Stadium.  Last week he passed Babe Ruth on the Hits list.  Erik Bedard will have shoulder surgery today.  Jeff Francis is calling it a season.  Fernando Tatis (shoulder) is out for the year.  The Rays basically clinched the AL East.  Ben Sheets, Nomar Garciaparra, and Hanley Ramirez got banged up.  Ichiro tied Wee Willie Keeler with his 8th consecutive 200 Hit season.  Jim Leyland was suspended for 3 games.

The NFL followed my plan of moving this week’s Houston-Baltimore game to Week 10, moving the Houston-Cincy game to Week 8, and moving Cincy’s bye to Week 10 to a T.  Darren McFadden scored his first NFL TD.  Jay Cutler and the Broncos beat the Chargers 39-38.  Following a blown call, the Broncos won a gutsy (yet stupid) two-point conversion.  Brandon Marshall caught 18 passes.  I played him in a PPR league.  PPR is so dumb.  Marshall scored nearly twice as much as Adrian Peterson, despite a 160 yards from All Day.  I’m going to start a league next year that awards RBs for breathing and QBs for seeing.  Marshall could see some more sidelines time as he was charged with battery.  Kurt Warner threw 3 TDs to Anquan Boldin.  The Pats beat the Jets without Brady.  Now the Bengals Offense is as bad as its character.  Sean Payton got an extension with the Saints.  Lawyer Milloy will need one after getting popped for DUI.  T.O. moved past Cris Carter into second place behind Jerry Rice for receiving TDs.  The NFL showed no sympathy for Shawne Merriman and fine him $7500 for a cheap hit on Jake Delhomme.  Brian Griese and Kerry Collins will remain starters for now.  DeSean Jackson pulled an Usain Bolt and celebrated early.  It literally cost a guy in my league a fantasy win as his opponent had Westbrook.  That’s a 12 point swing.  Tommy Kelly was popped with a DUI.  Speaking of DUIs, Seattle brought Koren Robinson back.  Elbert Mack was suspended for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Matt Ryan.  The Vikes benched Tarvaris Jackson.  Bob Sanders (ankle) is out a month.  Tyler Thigpen will make it three different starting QBs in three weeks for the Chiefs.  The Jags signed Chris Naeole to help their busted up O-Line.  James Farrior got fined $7500 for a dirty gesture.

The Cavs signed G Delonte West to a three-year extension.  Josh Howard is still an idiot.  Gilbert Arenas (knee) will be out until December.  Good thing the Wizards locked him up to $100 million contract.  Big Al Jefferson sprained his knee and will be sidelined a couple of weeks.  Some refreshing news.  The Houston Rockets sent four trailers full of supplies to Hurricane Ike victims.  Michael Beasley’s wallet got $50K lighter because he was a part of the Rookie Camp Weed/Women party.

Montreal signed D Patrice Brisebois to a one-year deal.  They also sent a draft pick to Chicago for C Robert Lang.  The L.A. Kings inked Centers Jarret Stoll and Brad Richardson to four- and two-year deals respectively.  Anaheim waived D Mathieu Schneider, but nobody wanted him.  Wayne Gretzky will not manage Canada’s Olympic team.  Rod Brind’Amour had his knee scoped.  Carolina will be without Justin Williams (Achilles) for six months.  Buffalo locked up RW Jason Pominville with a five-year extension.  St. Louis D Erik Johnson (knee) will miss a few days.

USC wiped the field with Ohio State.  Michigan State’s Javon Ringer piled up 282 rushing yards vs. Florida Atlantic.  Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford threw for 304 yards and 5 TDs.  Missouri’s Chase Daniels piled up 405 yards and 4 TDs (172 yards and 3 TDs) to Jeremy Maclin.  #9 Auburn beat Mississippi State 3-2.  Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell threw for 418 yards and 5 TDs (164 & 3 to Michael Crabtree).  #18 BYU pinned a 59-0 loss on UCLA.  Maryland beat #23 Cal 35-27 despite 423 yards from Kevin Riley.  Charlie Weis tore his knee getting pummeled on the sidelines.  He made a great joke about Brady having nothing on him.  ECU lost LB Quentin Cotton to a knee injury.  Wisconsin LB Jonathan Casillas got popped for drunk driving on a mo-ped.  Highlights this weekend:  #6 LSU vs. #10 Auburn and #18 Wake Forest over #24 Florida State.  In the Thursday night game, Colorado beat #21 West Virginia.

There is talk that Arizona Coach Lute Olson violated an NCAA rule.  The NCAA wants Indiana to wait to respond to another rule vioation.

Greg Biffle won the NSCS at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway.  Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards finished 2nd and 3rd.  Ron Hornaday shrugged off the steroids scandal and won the Craftsman Truck Series at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Chris Tidland won the Boise Open on the Nationwide Tour.  R.W. Eaks won the Greater Hickory Classic on the Champions Tour.  Angela Stanford won the Bell Micro LPGA Classic.  Robert Karlsson won the Mercedes-Benz Championship on the European Tour.  This weekend is all about the Ryder Cup.

Gilles Simon beat Carlos Moya in the  ATP BCR Open Romania.  Patty Schnyder beat Tamira Paszek in the WTA Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic.

That concludes the Tidbits. As always feel free to add any stories you liked this week in sports or discuss any of the stories I mentioned.  Be sure to check out my Links Page for some great sites.
