Sep 26, 2008

Florida won their ninth straigth game.  The Rays clinched a spot in the playoffs.  Joe Saunders had a kidney stone.  Jeff Kent came of the DL.  The Yankees closed Yankee Stadium with a W.  I can’t think of a better way to close that historic park.  Fans got pinched for taking home a “souvenir”.  Brandon Webb won his 22nd game.  Fauston Carmona (six games) and Gary Sheffield (four) were suspended for their roles in the bench-clearing brawl.  The Mets gave GM Omar Minaya a four-year extension.  The Red Sox clinched a playoff spot.  Todd Jones is set to retire when the season is over.  John Maine came off the DL.  Rafael Furcal finally came off the DL.  Brad Penny went on it.  Cito Gaston’s second stint with Toronto will last until at least 2010.  Mark Reynolds become the first batter to strike out 200 times in a year.  Mickey Vernon passed away.  The Twins swept the White Sox to take over first in the AL Central.  Roy Halladay earned his 20th Win of the year.

He sure can run against bad teams.  Buffalo improve to 3-0.  Brian Griese and Drew Brees topped the 400 yard mark.  Carson Palmer and Housh finally played well, but the Bengals fell to 0-3.  Jacksonville beat Indy on a last-second Field Goal.  Marion Barber and the Cowboys whooped up on Green Bay.  Al Harris tore his spleen and will miss the season.  Jeremy Shockey will miss a month with a sports hernia.  Jason Taylor’s start streak (132) will come to an end this week.  Brady Quinn is getting more reps.  Trent Green will replace Marc Bulger.  Must be the new thing to do.  Willie Parker and Casey Hampton will miss this week’s game for Pittsburgh.  Matt Millen finally got canned.  Plaxico Burress got suspended a game.  The Rams cut Fakhir Brown.  The Chiefs revolving door at QB will continue.  I may be in line for Week 7.  Roscoe Parrish (thumb) will miss a month.  Some tragic news, Matt Bryant’s infant son passed away.  Baltimore is crying foul against Cleveland, accusing them of trying to intentionally poke Willis McGahee in the eyes.  The NFL didn’t see it that way.  Troy Brown called it a career.  The Niners are going to hang Steve Young’s #8 in the rafters.  Bob Sanders got his knee scoped.

Darius Miles will bring a ten-game suspension with him to Boston.  Phoenix signed PG Goran Dragic.  Shareef Abdur-Rahim called it a career.  Washington picked up the option on Eddie Jordan’s contract.  Juan Dixon signed with Washington.  Allan Houston will try to give it a go again with the Knicks.  Francisco Garcia signed a five-year extension with Sacramento.  It turns out Monta Ellis hurt himself on a mo-ped.  How embarrasing.

Buffalo gave GM Darcy Regier a two-year extension.  San Jose will be without C Torrey Mitchell (broken leg) for a couple months.  Columbus Blue Jackets Goalie Steve Mason (knee) will miss a month.  St. Louis Blues Defenseman Erik Johnson (knee) will miss the season.  He hurt it when his foot got stuck in a golf cart.  Unbelievable.  I hope booze wasn’t involved since he’s only 20.  Sergei Gonchar will miss a couple weeks with a dislocated shoulder.  Nicklas Lidstrom broke his nose.

Missouri’s Chase Daniel threw for 439 yards and 2 TDs.  Colt McCoy set a Texas record for TD passes as he had 329 yards and 4 TDs.  Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell threw for 322 yards and 4 TDs.  Ohio State’s Terrell Pryor thre 4 TD passes.  NC State beat #15 East Carolina.  Boise State, behind Kellen Moore’s 386 yards, 3 TDs, beat #17 Oregon.  #18 Wake Forest beat #24 Florida State.  Kansas’ Todd Reesing thre for 356 yards.  #6 LSU beat #10 Auburn.  Texas lost TE Blaine Irby (knee) for the year.  #25 Fresno State’s Tom Brandstater threw for 4 TDs and ran for another as they beat Toledo 55-54.  USC will have to make due without CB Shareece Wright for a couple of weeks.  Beanie Wells should be back to face the Gophers.  Ball State WR Dante Love (spine) is done with football.  Washington State QB Kevin Lopina (back) is out indefinitely.  #1 USC got beat by Oregon State on Thursday.  This weekend’s big matchups:  #2 Oklahoma vs. #24 TCU, #3 Georgia vs. #8 Alabama, #12 Penn State vs. #22 Illinois, and #20 Clemson vs. Maryland.

Northern State Coach Don Meyer had his leg amputated.  Syracuse got some good news when Evan Devendorf was granted another year of eligibility.  Tubby Smith’s nephew was stabbed to death.  Pittsburgh gave Coach Jamie Dixon a three-year extension.

The U.S. took the early lead in the Ryder Cup.  They led 9-7 after Day 2.  No Tiger, No Problem as the U.S. won the Ryder Cup over Europe 16.5 to 11.5.  We hadn’t won since 1999. Will MacKenzie won the Viking Classic.  Matt Bettencourt won the Oregon Classic

Greg Biffle won the NSCS at Dover International Speedway.  Kyle Busch won the NASCAR Nationwide Series at Dover International Speedway.
