Get ‘em or Don’t Sweat ‘em Week 5

Oct 12, 2009

There were some unusual heroes on Sunday.  There always are.  Let’s take a look at them and see if they are worthy of your fantasy rosters.

Matt Cassel, QB, Kansas City Chiefs
- He’s not an elite QB, but he’s a decent backup, especially if the Chiefs continue to get down big and spend the rest of the game airing it out.
Ruling:  Get ‘em

Jamal Lewis, RB, Cleveland Browns
- If Lewis was dropped because of Jerome Harrison’s Week 4 performance, go ahead and pick him up.  He had a solid 117 yard rushing game with zero help in the passing game.
Ruling:  Get ‘em.

Sammy Morris, RB, New England Patriots - Patriot RBs are tricky, but it appears that Morris is the lead back now that Fred Taylor is out.  He has 18 carries to Laurence Maroney’s 5.
Ruling:  Get ‘em.

Dennis Northcutt, WR, Detroit Lions – Nortchutt caught 5 passes (8 targets) for 70 yards and a score in a loss to the Steelers, but had done little prior to his Sunday outburst.  I don’t expect him to continue to put  up solid numbers.
Ruling:  Don’t Sweat ‘em.

Mike Wallace, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers – Wallace also scored a TD this week, but just doesn’t get enough looks.  He had 2 catches for 52 yards on 5 targets.  Look elsewhere.
Ruling:  Don’t Sweat ‘em.

Miles Austin, WR, Dallas Cowboys - Anytime you have 10 catches (15 targets) for 250 yards and a pair of long scores, you’re going to be priority on the waiver wire.  He did very little  in the first four weeks though, so buyer beware.
Ruling:  Get ‘em.

Jeremy Maclin, WR, Philadelphia Eagles - DeSean Jackson won’t always be limited to 1 yard, but he showed McNabb how explosive he can be.  McNabb loves to spread the ball around so consistency may be an issue, but it appears this talented Rookie has adjusted to the NFL and should be owned in fantasy leagues.
Ruling: Get ‘em.

Josh Morgan, WR, San Francisco 49ers - Michael Crabtree’s signing must have lit a fire under Morgan, who caught 4 passes for 78 yards.  Of course getting pounded by the Falcons changed their game plan.  Morgan is worth having, but they are on a bye next week so he won’t give you immediate help.
Ruling:  Don’t Sweat ‘em.

Austin Collie, WR, Indianapolis Colts - Collie continues to pick up steam.  Unfortunately they go on bye this week, and Anthony Gonzalez should return soon.  They’ll have the Rams coming out of the bye, so if you can afford to hold him until then, he should have a solid game.
Ruling:  Get ‘em.
