Kentucky Derby 2016: 142nd Run for the Roses
Saturday will mark the 142nd Run for the Roses as majestic horses compete in the the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. For casual horse racing fans, it is the “unofficial” start of the racing season. So break out your big hats and your mint juleps for “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports”.
Over the years some pretty well-known horses have won this event. Names like War Admiral, Citation, Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Smarty Jones, and Barbaro. On two occasions the two-minute mark has been broken. First, in 1973 by Secretariat, who still holds the record at 1:59.40, and again in 2001 by Monarchos at at 1:59.97. Last year’s winner was American Pharoah, who went on to win the first Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978.
