Kevin Love Breaks Hand…Time to Panic?

Oct 17, 2012

.
The Timberwolves were dealt a serious blow when fantasy MVP candidate Kevin Love suffered a broken hand that could sideline him for a month or two.
.
Fortunately he will still be able to work out so conditioning shouldn’t be a factor when he returns. Although, being that it is his shooting hand does put a serious damper on things.
.
Love took his game to the next level, averaging 26.0 points, 13.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 0.5 blocks, 0.9 steals, and 1.9 three-pointers per game last year. The scoring, steals, and three-pointers were all career highs.
.
Love hoisted up 282 three-point attempts. Though he hit a decent 37.2 percent of them, that did have an adverse effect on his field goal percentage, which was at a career low 44.8 percent. The big man did hit 82.4 percent from the free throw line though, so all things considered it was a brilliant season.
.
His 2.3 turnovers per game is easy to live with and given his overall production he was a lock to be a top three or four pick prior to the injury.
.
This isn’t the type of injury that should linger and he could miss 15 or so games. That’s obviously not the way you want the season to start off for your first round pick, but if you can stay afloat for a few weeks, it’s the end of the year that really matters.
.
I initially had Love as my third overall pick behind LeBron and Durant (click here to see Top 50 rankings). The injury caused me to move him down a few slots. There is no guarantee that Russell Westbrook or Deron Williams, especially considering his durability in recent years, will play more games than Love, but I considered them a little safer picks.
.
That said, Love is still a top five choice in my mind.
