MLB Injury Report: Ibanez, Halladay, Downs, Bedard
NL MVP candidate Raul Ibanez was sidelined because of a strained groin. Ibanez is enjoying his finest season hitting .312 with 51 Runs, 22 HRs, and 59 RBIs. Matt Stairs (.289, 3 HRs, 11 RBIs) could see some additional along with John Mayberry, Jr., who was recently called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
AL Cy Young candidate Roy Halladay was also placed on the 15-day DL because of a groin injury. The move was made retroactive to June 13th. Halladay is 10-1 with 88 Ks, a 2.53 ERA, and 1.04 WHIP. Brett Cecil (2-1, 4.38 ERA, 1.38 WHIP) will likely start for Doc until he returns on June 28th.
Toronto also lost Closer Scott Downs to a sprained toe. Downs assumed the role when B.J. Ryan went down and has a 1-0 record with 8 Saves, 3 Holds, a 1.98 ERA, and a 0.88 WHIP. Ryan has a 5.82 ERA and a 1.82 WHIP so he’ll likely be bypassed for the Closer role by Jeff Frasor. Frasor has a 1.90 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, 3 Holds, and 1 save. It sounds as if Downs could be sidelined for a month or two so Frasor should be snatched up immediately or sooner.
Finally, the Mariners sent Iron man Erik Bedard to the 15-day DL because of a shoulder injury. Bedard is 5-2 with a 2.47 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. The move was made retroactive to June 7th making him eligible to return on June 23rd if everything checks out with Dr. Lewis Yocum, who will take a look at him according to Jim Street of MLB.com.
