Offseason Analysis: Denver Broncos

Feb 12, 2009

The Broncos shocked us by canning Mike Shanahan.  Fantasy owners grew tired of his shanahanigans.  Things may not change much on that front as Josh Daniels comes from Bill Belichick’s family line, who are not always forthright on their injury report.  They Broncos are set at QB with Jay Cutler, at WRs with Brandon Marsall, Eddie Royal, and Brandon Stokley, and a TE with Tony Scheffler and Daniel Graham.  Where they need improvement as at RB.  I think Shanahan the success he had at RB go to his head a bit, as he hasn’t really had a dependable back since Mike Anderson in 2005.  That is an area than is in dire need of attention.  That, and their Defense.

Nate Webster and Kenny Peterson are their main free agents on D, but this unit needs some major overhaulin’.  They finished 29th in yards allowed (27th against the run, 26th against the pass)  and 30th in points allowed.  They were 26th in Sacks and dead last with just 13 takeaways.  Clearly this is the area that needs to be addressed, which surprises me why the went with an offensive-minded Coach.

***The Broncos have made major changes on Defense by cutting Dewayne Robertson, Dre’ Bly, Jamie Winborn, and Marquand Manuel.***

I’m not a Broncos fan, but I do like Cutlter. After Rivers talked the smack I found myself in his corner.

I could see Shanahan bringing him in. Not sure how a rookie HC would handle him. Of course, a Patriots staple is to bring in unhappy guys who still want to play and want to win. Maybe Pioli tries to get him.
