Preseason MLB Lester Awards

Mar 25, 2008

With the baseball season underway, here’s a look at my preseason predictions.

American League
AL East: Boston - World Series Champs should be just as strong.
AL Central: Detroit - Offseason trade made Detroit a major player
AL West: Anaheim Angels - Still the Class of the West.  Hunter was great addition.
AL Wildcard: New York Yankees - They’re still the Yankees.  Young pitching will need to hold up.

National League
NL East: New York Mets - Johan and Pedro form a lethal 1-2 punch.
NL Central: Chicago Cubs - Is this the year finally?
NL West: Arizona - Young team will only get better.
NL Wildcard: Actual: Philadelphia Phillies - Offense is a force to be reckoned with.

Boston Red Sox over Anaheim.  The Sox have their number.
Detroit over New York.  Pitching and hitting are too strong for Detroit.
Boston over Detroit.  Beckett dominates once again

Mets over Cubs.  Still not this year.  Johan is unbelievable.
Arizona over Phillies.  Arizona’s pitching overpowers Philly’s hitting.
Mets over Arizona.  Great pitching matchups, but Pedro wills the Mets to the Series.

World Series
Boston Red Sox over the New York Mets.  Bill Buckner can really breath easier now.

lesters-award-baseball.jpg  AL MVP:  A-Rod.  Seriously.  Can anyone else even compete?

lesters-award-baseball.jpg  AL Cy Young:  Josh Beckett.  He was robbed last year.

lesters-award-baseball.jpg  AL Rookie of the Year:  Evan Longoria.  Sky’s the limit for Evan.

AL Manager of the Year:  Terry Francona.  Best record in baseball.
AL Comeback Player of the Year:  Travis Hafner.  Pronk rebounds to put up huge numbers.
AL Batting Crown:  Ichiro.  He’s a machine.
AL Home Run Title:  A-Rod.  Period.
AL RBI Title:  A-Rod.  Period.

lesters-award-baseball.jpg  NL MVP:  Ryan Howard.  This guy can mash.

lesters-award-baseball.jpg NL Cy Young:  Johan Santana.  The NL is “very, very good to me”.

lesters-award-baseball.jpg  NL Rookie of the Year:  Joey Votto.  Cincinnati is going to fall in love with him.

NL Manager of the Year:  Willie Randolph.  Feel good story after the collapse.
NL Comeback Player of the Year:  Randy Johnson.  The Big Unit is back.
NL Batting Crown:  Chase Utley.  The dude is just good.
NL Home Run Title:  Ryan Howard.  He’s a beast.
NL RBI Title:  Ryan Howard.  Plenty of plate setters.  Howard always clears his plate.

nice picks… i have very similar picks… cant wait for the season to begin. with no fantasy teams, i get to just sit back and enjoy the whole season as opposed to worrying if yuniesky betancourt got 2 hits in the west coast games. looking forward to the season

I think that the angels have too many question marks with the seriuos injuries in the pitching, I have the Indians edging my Yanks for the Wild card, (However, If the Young Arms of the Yankees come through the Yankees can dominate the AL) I have the Dodgers winning a 4 way wild race in the NL WEst. My World series pick may be a fantasy but I have the Indians beating the Cubs.

Larry – If Escobar is out the prediction will blow up in my face. Seattle may take it.
