Sammy Sosa Took Steroids

The New York Times is reporting that Sammy Sosa failed a drug test in 2003.  The New York Times cites “lawyers with knowledge of the drug-testing results from that year” as their source.  This is the latest black eye for baseball as yet another star is linked to performance-enhancing drugs.  Unlike Manny Ramirez and Alex Rodriguez, Sosa’s failed test does not come as a shock to most baseball fans.  He has been presumed guilty for years, and this “new” knowledge won’t have the ripple effect among baseball fans.  Instead of outrage, I imagine most people’s reactions will be in the neighborhood of “I thought so”.  Although you may be disgusted when looking at the top ten HR list.

1.  Barry Bonds, 762 – steroids
2.  Hank Aaron, 755
3.  Babe Ruth, 714
4.  Willie Mays, 660
5.  Ken Griffey, Jr., 617 – PLEASE BE CLEAN
6.  Sammy Sosa, 609 – steroids
7.  Frank Robinson, 586
8.  Mark McGwire, 583 – steroids
9.  Harmon Killebrew, 573
10.  Rafael Palmeiro, 569 – steroids

With four of the top ten (A-Rod at 12, ManRam at 17) being steroid users does a lot to damage the history of the game.  Sosa can kiss the HOF goodbye.  He was already on thin ice because of the corked bat and the speculation.  It gives a whole new meaning to his nickmame “Say it Ain’t Sosa”.  I wish I could.  I wish I could.

Man. I looked up to Sosa but everyone knows Sosa took steroids. Good job with the report. I real hope Griffey didnt take roids. if you read vindicated by jose canseco, he said he injected sosa with roids so it’s obvious he had them. and also, 60 home runs in a season, it has to be roids

    As I said earlier

Knock me down with a feather. As Bob Ryan would say
    I am shocked, shocked.

As I have said on numerous blogs, from mine, yours, Sporting News and on the baseball thread on
Sosa is among the top of the list of players with great numbers that will never got into the HOF, or at least not get in till very late in their eligibility.
I have heard guys like Buster Olney and others on ESPN said they will never get in but they will vote for them, and I have heard Ken rosenthal of Fox Sports say they should not get in but they might when all the old guard Newspaper writers and old time HOFrs die off.
Myself, I do not think any of the players that are even suspected of ever using they will not get in.
Of course this does open up the possibilities of the Ron Santo’s and many more that we have discussed in Cooperstown Chronicles

It’s hard to know when and if the steroid guys get in. it will be hard to induct anyone else in that era.

I agree, I think it will be tough for “Anyone” in this era,
We will find out when Jeter retires.

    On Twitter

RealSkipBayless At Chi Trib in ’99, wanted to write Sosa on roids, but editors said needed eyewitness to accuse illegal drug use. Had alot, not eyewitness.

I just wonder if he gets less than 90% because some will not vote for any player playing from 95-around now,

To me that would be silly. I know there will be those that think that way though. You are right about that.

There’s an issue with your theory
    ROBINSON- Fine
So in reality three of the top ten did not cheat…
