Syracuse Stays Alive with win over Marquette

Mar 9, 2008

This has been a tough year for Syracuse.  They are a young team that had to grow up quickly after losing Junior Eric Devendorf because of a knee injury ten games into the season.  Being a young team they’ve had their share of ups and downs.  Taking this must win against #20 Marquette was one of the ups.  The win over Georgetown was another one.  Their lost to Pitt last week while leading by double digits with under four minutes remainging was one of the low points.

In this must win, Syracuse relied on fresmen Johnny Flynn and Donte Green, as they have had most of the year.   Donte Green led Syracuse with 17.4 points per game.  Flynn was third, following Green and Devendorf’s 17.0 ppg, with a 15.7 point average.  He also led the team with 5.2 assists per night. Tonight both Flynn and Green scored 21 points.  Flynn added seven assists.  Arinze Onuaku and Paul Harris chipped in with 14 points apiece.

With the win Syracuse improved to 19-12 on the year, including 9-9 in the BigEast.  In order to make the NCAA tournament, they will need to make a decent showing at the Big East Tournament.  If anyone can prepare their team for a strong Big East Tourney run it’s Jim Boeheim.  I imagine he’ll have that 2-3 zone defense locked and loaded.  For me the Field of 65 in not complete without the inclusion of Syracuse.  I’ll be crossing my fingers hoping they can pull it off.
