LestersLegends.com » Brett Favre comeback

WCCO TV is reporting that Brett Favre will sign with the Vikings today.  This is what I suspected when Favre initially said “No” to the Vikings. It’s just a matter of time until Favre gets the itch or the Vikings realize they do not have a NFL caliber starting QB.  Favre gets to skip training camp and show up when it really matters.  If you bought into his “retirement”, shame on you.  If he does sign, you can bump Bernard Berrian and Visanthe Shiancoe up a bit in your fantasy rankings.

Supposedly today is the day that we find out Brett Favre will join the Vikings.  If his shoulder holds up he should still be able to produce.  He has some weapons to work with in WRs Bernard Berrian, Sidney Rice, Bobby Wade, and Percy Harvin, TE Visanthe Shiancoe, and RBs Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor.  The Vikings will have two new faces on their Offensive Line, but it still should be a solid unit anchored by Steve Hutchinson.  If Favre doesn’t try to force the issue he could be a solid backup fantasy QB this year.

He faces Cincinnati, Carolina, and Chicago in the fantasy playoffs.  The Bears game is in Chicago so weather may be a factor.  His best matchups this year are Cleveland and Detroit in Weeks 1 & 2, St. Louis in Week 5, Detroit in Week 10, and Arizona in Week 13.  At this point in his career he is a fantasy backup so it may be wise to pair him with Jay Cutler, Aaron Rodgers (ironically), Dre Brees, or Philip Rivers who have byes in Week 5 or Eli Manning or Matt Schaub who have byes in Week 10.  Favre will be drafted in the later rounds.  I’m not sure what kind of production to expect from  him.  I’m goign to low ball him initially at 3200 yards and 18 TDs.

Brett Favre Speaks

15 June 2009

Brett Favre finally spoke on HBO’s Joe Buck Live.  He didn’t come out and say he is going to be the QB for the Vikings, but it’s pretty obvious (actually it’s been for a while) that if his biceps tendon is healed enough for him to throw without pain, Brett Favre will be the next Minnesota Vikings QB.  If not, he’ll stay retired…for this year anyway.

So as you begin to assess your fantasy football rankings you may as well work under the assumption that Brett Favre is going to be the Vikings QB.  At this stage in his career I would only trust Favre as a backup fantasy QB.  If and when he signs Bernard Berrian should get a minor bump.  He loves to throw the deep ball and Berrian would love to have a QB that could actually deliver an accurate deep ball.  Sidney Rice could be a guy Favre chucks it up to in the end zone so he has some fantasy relevance.  Bobby Wade and Percy Harvin should contribute in the slot.  Of the two, I’d probably take Percy first since he is more explosive and could get some time in the Wildcat.  Brett Favre has been fantasy friendly to Tight Ends in recent years so Visanthe Shiancoe would hold his value.

At least we have an unofficial, official statement regarding Favre’s future so you can play your fantasy team accordingly.

Since it’s officially Hurricane Season, it should come as no surprise that Hurricane Brett is picking up steam.  Let’s take a look at what transpired over the past few days.  Nothing.  Seriously.  Nothing has changed with the Brett Favre saga.  Nor will it until his bicep tendon is fully healed.  If and when it becomes healed, Brett Favre will be the Quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings.  Whether or not someone incorrectly reports that the Vikings have set a deadline (hard or soft), put the Favre Chase on hold, or declare Tarvaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels in the lead for the starting QB gig holds no weight until it’s determined if Favre is healthy.  Whether or not Favre books hotels, a private jet, and buys a whole block of seats for the Vikings-Packers games doesn’t matter either.  All that matters is the rehab Favre puts in and whether or not he can heal in time for training camp.  I’ll still report on the situation if something changes, but I just want you to not get sucked in either way in this mess.  It’s simple.  If he’s healthy he is the Vikings starting QBs.  If not, he stays retired.  The rest–details, baby, details.

According to ESPN‘s Chris Mortensen and Ed Werder, that just might be the case.  Apparently Brett Favre had shoulder surgery a month ago in an effort to make yet another comeback attempt.  If his torn biceps tendon heals properly the Vikings will likely have a new Quarterback.  It seems like every story that comes out about Favre is followedby one that contradicts it.  It’s getting to the point though, that with all of this smoke there will be fire sometime this summer when the Vikings head to training camp.  Stay tuned.

Despite a Pioneer Press report that Favre will meet with Dr. James Andrews to discuss surgical options to speed up his return to the NFL, ESPN’s Ed Werder is throwing a challenge flag.  Werder is saying Favre does not want surgery and would prefer to non-surgical options that would allow the tendon to “release naturally”.  The thinking is if that happens the pain will go away and Favre will be OK to carry on with the Vikings.

Don’t worry, tomorrow TMZ will report that John Madden has carved Brett Favre’s likeness in a block of cheese.  Stay tuned.

It appears everyone wants to weigh in on the Brett Favre situation except for Favre himself and the Vikings.  The Pioneer Press is reporting that Brett Favre will meet with Dr. James Andrews to discuss a surgery on his torn biceps tendon that will allow Favre to play for the Vikings this year.  Recovery time is expected to be six-to-eight weeks.
