It was one of those weird days in baseball for me. I was saddened to hear of the passing of Harry Kalas. Having lived just outside of Philly from sixth grade to graduation I had the good fortune of listening to plenty of Harry Kalas’ broadcasts. It won’t be the same without him. I was surprised upon hearing that Mark “the Bird” Fidrych died as well. While I did not have the opportunity to watch the Bird pitch, it’s always sad when one of the games characters is taken from us.
Despite the sadness, today was a great baseball day for me. No, my fantasy team did not dominate. Honestly, I haven’t even checked my teams yet. No, today was a great baseball day because I was able to share the wonderful game with my son for the first time. I have been hesitant to take him to a game because he can be quite a challenge at times. I have had to leave the movie theatre with him because I couldn’t get him to stop talking. Baseball is different though. You can talk. You can even yell when the time is right. I went in hoping to make it through three Innings. We lasted five. He wanted to stay longer, but I knew that he would be getting tired soon and wouldn’t be able to control the urge to get in trouble. Jason Kubel hit the first HR. I introduced him to Cracker Jacks. He was reluctant at first until I reminded him they are mentioned in the Take Me Out to the Ballgame song. He had a Dome Dog. He had his moments, but the people around me were great. They’ve all been there before. Perhaps later this year we’ll go to a Sunday game. The Twins allow kids to run the bases after the game. Now that, he’d love. Of course I can see him not making the turn at second and going right into Centerfield, but that’s my boy. He marches to his own beat.
A special thanks to my cousin Noelle who gave me the tickets. Sadly the Twins lost, but my son won’t remember that.
