This weekend the Breeders’ Cup will signify the end of the thoroughbred racing season. There will be 14 races aired on ABC, ESPN, and ESPN 2.
The highlight of the racing weekend will be the Breeders’ Cup Classic, which will feature Preakness and Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird (12-1 odds), Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird (9-2), and the favorite Zenyatta (5-2).
Unfortunately Rachel Alexandra won’t be joining fellow filly Zenyatta in the Cup.
Well, the rematch of Rachel Alexandra and Mine That Bird will not be the focus of the 141st Belmont Stakes as Rachel Alexandra will not run. Calvin Borel will have his shot at the Triple Crown for a jockey as he rode the two horses to their respective Kentucky Derby and Preakness wins. He will once again ride Mine That Bird in the 141st Belmont Stakes.
The Belmont Stakes is the longest of the three races at 1.5 miles or 12 furlongs. The race is run at Belmont Park in Elmont, NY. The third leg of the Triple Crown is also called the Run for the Carnations. Some of the famous horses to win the Belmont Stakes are Man O’ War, Sir Barton, Secretariat, Affirmed, War Admiral, Seattle Slew, and Citation. Secretariat ran the fastest race at the current distance in 1973 with a blazing time of 2:24:00.
With the Preakness just a day away, filly Rachel Alexandra is an 8-5 favorite to take home the Woodlawn Vase. The Preakness will mark the first time that she challenged male horses.
According to a USA Today article, she “ran to a record 20¼-length margin in the May 1 Kentucky Oaks. She has dusted her opponents by a combined 43½ lengths since the unflappable Calvin Borel teamed with her five races ago”. Borel ran Mine That Bird to a Kentucky Derby victory. It is the first time ever that a jockey that won the Kentucky Derby switched horses for the Preakness.
