New York Mets ace Johan Santana joins the long line of injured Mets players.  Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, David Wright, the list goes on.  It’s staggering.  Now their ace is gone for the year.  Where does that leave you as your fantasy team winds down?  In a big hole, that’s where.  If you are fantasy team is unlike the Mets and still in the chase, you’ve got to find a way to somehow replace the lost production.  Obviously, you aren’t getting someone to slide in without missing a beat.  Here are some options guys who have pitched well the past month:

Freddy Sanchez Giants
San Francisco Second Baseman Freddy Sanchez also landed on the DL because of a strained shoulder that has kept him out of action for seven games.  The move was made retroactive to August 18th, meaning he’s eligible to come off the DL next Wednesday, September 2nd.  Sanchez isn’t nearly the loss that Johan is, but there are options (with 2B eligibility) to plug in while he’s out.  Past month’s stats listed.

In case you missed it Carlos Beltran received good news when his second opinion confirmed his injury as a bone bruise.  He will likely be out until after the All-Star break.  There was talk of microfracture surgery, so this is clearly great news for Beltran owners.

Brandon Webb has decided not to have shoulder on his ailing shoulder.  He will continue to rehab it with the hope of throwing in September.  If you are holding a roster spot (or a DL spot) for Webb, it’s safe to cut the cord and let him go.

If you were waiting on Kansas City’s Mike Aviles to bust out of his Sophomore Slump, you can get on with your life.  Aviles is going to undergo Tommy John Surgery to repair his elbow.

In other elbow news, Baltimore’s Koji Uehara has a partially torn tendon in his elbow, which will cost him 6-8 weeks.
Jake Peavy will miss a couple more weeks as he didn’t get clearance to begin rehabbing his ankle.  He’ll be back in a protective boot for another couple of weeks.

Raul Ibanez, an early MVP candidate, will begin a rehab assignmnet next week.  He suffered a groin injury.

The Rangers will get a boost this weekend when Josh Hamilton returns from the DL.  He is recovering from surgery on an abdominal muscle.  He was able to steal third in a rehab game the other day, so he should be good to go.  Maybe he can finally get his 2009 season on track.

Speaking of needing to get back on track, the Cubs finally got some good news when they found out that Aramis Ramirez should return early next week.  The Cubs have been in a freefall, and perhaps he can steady the lineup.  As for steadying the clubhouse, that may need an act of God.

The Indians activated OF Grady Sizemore (elbow) from the DL.  He has been out since May 30th.  He has struggled this season hitting .223 with 29 Runs, 9 HRs, 31 RBIs, and 7 SBs.  Despite his struggles, he should be inserted into fantasy lineups immediately.

The Reds activated 1B Joey Votto.  Votto is enjoying a fine season hitting .357 with 23 Runs, 8 HRs, and 33 RBIs.  I would hold off on putting him into your fantasy lineup until his role is defined since he was sidelined with a mysterious ailment.

The Mets placed Carlos Beltran on the 15-DL because of a knee bruise.  It has not slowed him at the plate though as he’s hitting .336 with 40 Runs, 8 HRs, 40 RBIs, and 11 SBs.  Fernando Martinez is getting another stint with the Mets.  He hit just .194 in his first taste of the bigs.  Ryan Church (.277, 2 HRs, 16 RBIs) is the guy I’d add.

The Angels are returning Ervin Santana to the 15-Day DL because of sore triceps.  Santana has struggled in his six starts this year going 1-3 with a 7.47 ERA and a 1.85 WHIP.  The move was made retroactive to June 12th, but it’s unclear when he’ll make his next start.  At this point he hasn’t shown he’s worth a roster spot on fantasy teams.

The bumps and bruises keep on coming.

NL MVP candidate Raul Ibanez was sidelined because of a strained groin.  Ibanez is enjoying his finest season hitting .312 with 51 Runs, 22 HRs, and 59 RBIs.  Matt Stairs (.289, 3 HRs, 11 RBIs) could see some additional along with John Mayberry, Jr., who was recently called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

AL Cy Young candidate Roy Halladay was also placed on the 15-day DL because of a groin injury.  The move was made retroactive to June 13th.  Halladay is 10-1 with 88 Ks, a 2.53 ERA, and 1.04 WHIP.  Brett Cecil (2-1, 4.38 ERA, 1.38 WHIP) will likely start for Doc until he returns on June 28th.

Toronto also lost Closer Scott Downs to a sprained toe.  Downs assumed the role when B.J. Ryan went down and has a 1-0 record with 8 Saves, 3 Holds, a 1.98 ERA, and a 0.88 WHIP.  Ryan has a 5.82 ERA and a 1.82 WHIP so he’ll likely be bypassed for the Closer role by Jeff Frasor.  Frasor has a 1.90 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, 3 Holds, and 1 save.  It sounds as if Downs could be sidelined for a month or two so Frasor should be snatched up immediately or sooner.

Finally, the Mariners sent Iron man Erik Bedard to the 15-day DL because of a shoulder injury.  Bedard is 5-2 with a 2.47 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP.  The move was made retroactive to June 7th making him eligible to return on June 23rd if everything checks out with Dr. Lewis Yocum, who will take a look at him according to Jim Street of MLB.com.

The Mets were forced to put John Maine on the 15-day DL because of shoulder soreness.  The Mets just can’t catch a break with the injuries.  Maine was 5-4 with a 4.52 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, and 42 Ks.  Fernando Nieve, who was called up when J.J. Putz went on the DL for the Mets, will get the start for Maine tomorrow.  In four starts for Triple-A Buffalo Nieve was 3-0 with a 3.70 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 23 Ks in 24-1/3 Innings.

Jeremy Bonderman made just one poor start before his shoulder forced him back on the DL.  He gave up 6 Runs in 4 Innings.  Dontrelle Willis, who has looked shaky at best since his return, will hold down Bonderman’s spot in the rotation.  However, with a 6.60 ERA and 1.70 WHIP, his spot is exceedingly tenuous.

The Phillies lost Closer Brad Lidge to the 15-day DL because of a sprained knee.  After a perfect 2008 season, this year has been anything but for Lidge.  He is 0-3 with 13 Saves, 6 Blown Saves, a staggering 7.27 ERA and robust 1.81 WHIP.  Ryan Madson, who is 2-1 with 2 Saves, 13 Holds, a sparkling 2.22 ERA and solid 1.06 WHIP will likely handle Closer duties until Lidge can return.

In other injury news, Texas lost Josh Hamilton for four-to-six weeks because of an abdomen injury and Brandon McCarthy because of a stress fracture in his shoulder.

MLB Injury Report

5 June 2009
jose-reyes
Jose Reyes
has a tear in his hamstring that will delay his return from the DL.  As a player that relies on his speed, the injury is much more serious for Reyes than it would be for a slugger.  Hopefully this injury doesn’t linger into July.  Reyes is hitting .279 with 18 Runs, 2 HRs, 15 RBIs, and 11 SBs in 36 games.

jj-putz
Reyes’ teammate J.J. Putz could be on the shelf a while if he undergoes elbow surgery like the Daily News is suggesting.  Putz is 1-4 with 2 Saves, 10 Holds, a 5.22 ERA, and a 1.64 WHIP.

Kyle Lohse
The Cardinals will place Righty Kyle Lohse on the DL.  Lohse injured his forearm in his last start on Wednesday vs. the Reds.  He could miss upwards of a month.  Brad Thompson will fill Lohse’s spot in the rotation.  Lohse is 4-4 with a 3.99 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.  Thompson has a 4.12 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP in ten games (one start).  He has just 6 Ks in 19-2/3 Innings so he has very little fantasy value.
