Friday Tidbits – 9/18/09

Derek Jeter now has more hits with the Yankees than anyone in their storied history.  Ichiro set the record with 200 hits in nine consecutive seasons.  Alfonso Soriano (knee) will go under the knife.  Justin Morneau (back) will miss the rest of the year.  Jorge Posada and the Yankees got in a brawl with Jesse Carlson and Toronto.  They got suspended.  Dice K came back and got the Win.  Carl Crawford and Pat Burrell got into it.  Roy Oswalt is done for the year.

Brett Favre was named a Captain of the Vikings.  Shawne Merriman won’t get charged in his alleged domestic assualt incident.  James Davis got in a car accident.  Richard Seymour finally reported to Oakland.  McNabb fractured a rib.  Drew Brees threw six TDs.  Adrian Peterson had 3 TDs.  Denver beat Cincy on a tipped pass.  Jay Cutler threw 4 INTs as the Bears lost.  Brian Urlacher (wrist) is gone for the year.  Anthony Gonzalez (knee) will miss 2-8 weeks.  Tom Brady looked OK until the 4th quarter when he was amazing.  The Bills gave the game away to the Pats.  The Pats throwback jerseys looked so cool.  LT rolled his ankle.  Sproles looked good filling in.  Shawn Andrews is done for the year.  The Eagles signed Jeff Garcia.  The Panthers signed A.J. Feeley.  Jacksonville lost Reggie Hayward for the year.  Someone vandalized Leodis McKelvin’s yard.  What an idiot.  Boo him, but leave his home alone.  The Jets got fined for no reporting Favre on the injury report last year.  The Colts signed Hank Baskett.  Vince Young took Steve McNair’s sons to their school’s Dear Dads Breakfast.  Nice guesture.  On the other end of the spectrum, Dunta Robinson got fined $25K for putting “Pay Me Rick” on his shoes last week. 

James Singelton signed with the Mavs.  Pat Riley and others took a paycut from the Heat.  Richard Jefferson dislocated his thumb.  The tyrant David Stern fined Stephen Jackson $25K for saying he wanted to be traded.  The Suns bought out Sasha Pavlovic’s contract.  He signed with the Wolves.  Tim Thomas needs to get his knee scoped.  Desmond Mason signed with the Kings.  Portland signed Juwan Howard.

Buffalo signed Drew Stafford.  Florida signed Dennis Seidenberg. St. Louis picked up the option on Coach Andy Murray’s contract.  Columbus signed Antooine Vermette.  The Wild signed Petr Sykora.

#3 USC beat #8 Ohio State.  Michigan beat #18 Notre Dame.  Houston beat #5 Oklahoma State.  UCLA’s Kevin Prince will miss a month.  Georgia’s Rod Battle and Pitt’s Andrew Taglianetti will miss the year with ACL injuries.  Georgia also lost Derrick Lott for the year to an ankle injury.  North Carolina lost Center Lowell Dyer and Tight End Zach Pianalto for a month.  #20 Miami beat #14 Georgia Tech.  Ohio State lost OL Jim Cordle for a month.

Memphis’ Angel Garcia tore his ACL.  Tom Izzo got a contract extension.  Oklahoma State gave Travis Ford an extension.  Pitt’s Jermaine Dixon broke his foot.  Myles Brand lost his bout with cancer.

Juan Martin del Potro beat Roger Federer to win the U.S. Open.  Kim Clijsters beat Caroline Wozniacki to win the Women’s Finals.  Venus and Serena won the Doubles Final.  Serena Williams had a meltdown in her last singles match and got fined.

Tiger Woods won the BMW Championship.  James Kingston won the Mercedes-Benz Championship.  The U.S. won the Walker Cup.  Jiyai Shin won the P&G Beauty NW Arkansas Championship.  Josh Teater won the Utah Championship.
Denny Hamlin won the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway.  Carl Edwards won the Nationwide race.

Grady Sizemore shut it down for the year.  Same with Jose Guillen.  Carlos Pena broke two fingers after getting hit by C.C. Sabathia finishing his season.  Fernando Rodney got a three-game suspension.  Corey Hart came off the DL.  So did Carlos Beltran.  Derek Jeter tied Lou Gehrig for the most hits for a Yankee.  Torii Hunter won the Branch Rickey Award.  He is just a great person.

Favre’s wallet is $10K lighter after getting fined for his crackback block.  The Bills fired OC Turk Schonert.  Kevin Jones will miss the year.  The Bills cut Dominic Rhodes.  The Giants cut David “F’n” Tyree.  The Saints cut Joey Harrington.  The Raiders cut Jeff Garcia.  Tampa dealt Luke McCown to Jacksonville for a pick.  The Patriots traded Richard Seymour to Oakland for a 2011 first round pick.  He still hasn’t reported to Oakland though.  Matthew Stafford will start for the Lions.  Shawne Merriman got himself in a stick situation.  We’ll have to see how it plays out, but it doesn’t look good.  In an odd turn of events, it appears the Broncos and Brandon Marshall are discussing an extension.  Favre said he wouldn’t put his streak before the team.  Pittsburgh beat Tennessee in OT to open the year.  The Jets could be in some hot water for not listing Favre on the injury report last year.  If it were the Patriots, there would be a lot more noise.  The Vikings cut Bobby Wade and signed Greg Lewis.

The Wolves signed PG Ramon Sessions.  Allen Iverson will play for Memphis next year.  C.J. Watson re-signed with Golden State. The Timberwovles kept dealing players by sending Darius Songaila and Bobby Brown to New Orleans for Antonio Daniels.  I wouldn’t get too cozy if I was Antonio.  Some guy named Michael Jordan will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Columbus signed Derick Brassard.  Boston signed Coach Claude Julien.  Anaheim signed Steve Eminger.  Dany Heatley is going to San Jose, Patrick Marleau is going to the Kings, and Alexander Frolov and Jarret Stoll is going to Ottawa in a three-team deal.

Oregon suspended LaGarrette Blount for the year.  #6 Ohio State barely beat Navy.  #22 Iowa narrowly defeast Northern Iowa.  #9 Oklahoma State beat #13 Georgia.  #20 BYU beat #3 Oklahoma.  #5 Alabama beat #7 Virginia Tech.  Sam Bradford (shoulder) will miss a couple of weeks.  Oklahoma’s Jermaine Gresham and Florida’s Andre Dubose will miss the rest of the year with injuries.  #3 USC meets #8 Ohio State and #18 Notre Dame takes on Michigan this weekend.

Samford’s Jim Griffin died of an apparent heart condition.  Seton Hall Coach Bobby Gonzalez got a contract extension.

Steve Stricker won the Deutsche Bank Championship.  Suzann Peterson won the Canadien Open.  Jeff Sluman won the Walmart First Tee Open.  Alexander Noren won the European Masters.  Troy Merritt won the Mexico Open.

Kasey Kahne won at  Atlanta Motor Speedway.  Kevin Harvick won the Nationwide race.

The Angels landed Scott Kazmir for some prospects.  John Lackey picked up his 100th Win.  The Dodgers landed Ronnie Belliard from the Nationals.  Zack Greinke tossed a one-hitter.  The Dodgers acquired Jim Thome and Jon Garland.  Brad Penny signed with the Giants.  Aaron Boone is back with the Astros.  David Wright came off the DL.  Jason Giambi joined Colorado.  Colorado Closer Huston Street (biceps) is out indefinitely.  Pedro Martinez tossed a gem to beat Tim Lincecum.  He’s 3-0 with a 3.52 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP.  Not bad for an old cat.  Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla had some beef.

The Broncos suspended Brandon Marshall.  Chicago’s Dusty Dvoracek (knee) is out for the year.  Byron Leftwich won the Tampa Bay starting QB gig.  Ochocinco got fined $5K for an orange chin strap.  Tedy Bruschi is calling it a career.  The Pats cut Kevin O’Connell.  Matt Cassel sprained his MCL.  Brett Favre looked much better in his second preseason start.  Osi had beef with the Giants and left practice.  Matt Schaub rolled his ankle.   Pacman Jones signed with the CFL.  Andre Smith suffered a foot fracture shortly after ending his holdout.  Ricky Williams signed an extension.  John Riggins and Clinton Portis have a beef.  Turns out Pacman won’ t play in the CFL after all.  Tampa Bay fired OC Jeff Jagodzinski. Michael Vick can return in Week 2.  Vince Young had a nice game.

J.R. Smith and Jason Richardson got suspended.  Bill Laimbeer will be on Minnesota’s coaching staff.  Rubio won’t play for them for two years.  Mikki Moore signed with Golden State.  Houston is saying that Yao Ming could play next year.  The Celtics signed Marquis Daniels.  Bruce Bowen is hanging it up.  Atlanta signed Jason Collins.

San Jose Sharks sent defensemen Christian Ehrhoff and Brad Lukowich to Vancouver Canucks for prospects.  Tampa Bay signed Alex Tanguay.  Paul Kelly was fired as the executive director by the NHLPA.  Adam Mair (hip) will miss six weeks.  Roberto Luongo signed a 12-year, $64 million deal with Vancouver.  Phillippe Boucher hung up his skates.  Phoenix signed Taylor Pratt.

Nick Saban got a lengthy extension at Alabama, but we all know it’s only good until someone offers him more money.  USC WR Ronald Johnson (collarbone) will miss two months and Shareece Wright (academics) will miss the year.  Michigan is in some hot water over possible practice violations. Cannon Smith is transferring to Memphis.  Iowa’s Jewel Hampton (knee) will miss the year.  Oklahoma State’s Jamal Mosley quit the team.  Alabama’s Julio Jones and Mark Ingram were reinstated.  Oklahoma State’s Orie Lemon tore his ACL.  South Carolina’s Clifton Geathers got a one-game suspension.  Arizona State suspended a few of their players.  Oklahoma’s Jermaine Gresham (knee) will miss their opener.  #14 Boise State beat #16 Oregon.

Pitt suspended Gilbert Brown because he wasn’t hitting the books.  Mississippi State Center Jarvis Varnado was hospitalized after not feeling well during a workout.

Heath Slocum if you got ‘em won at the Barclays.  Byeong-Hun An won the U.S. Amateur.  M.J. Hur won the Safeway Classic.  Gary Christian won the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic.  Loren Roberts won the Boeing Classic.  Peter Hedblom won the Johnnie Walker Championship.

Carl Edwards won the Nationwide race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.

Fernando Verdasco beat Sam Querrey to win the ATP Pilot Pen Tennis.  Caroline Wozniacki beat  Elena Vesnina in the Women’s final.

The Twins acquired Carl Pavano.  Jason Giambi was cut.  So was John Smoltz.  Carlos Zambrano went on the DL.  The Brewers traded for David Weathers.  The White Sox bought out Alex Rios’ contract.   Vladimir Guerrero hit his 400th HR.  Troy Tulowitzki hit for the Cycle.  Scott Rolen went on the DL.  Kevin  Youkilis and Rick Portcello each got five-game suspensions for fighting.  The Brewers sent J.J. Hardy to the minors and designated Bill Hall for assignment.  They also fired Pitching Coach Bill Castro.  Lance Berkman, Gil Meche, and LaTroy Hawkins came off the DL. Pedro got a Win in his return.  Someone poured a beer on Shane Victorino.   Jordan Zimmermann will have Tommy John surgery.  Jonny Gomes had a 3 HR game.  Jake Peavy pitched well in a rehab start.

Brandon Jones will miss two months with a cracked shoulder.  The Browns cut Shaun Smith.  Roddy White got PAID.  Rod Woodson, Randall McDaniel,  Bruce Smith, Derrick Thomas, Ralph Wilson and Bob Hayes were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  Cornelius Ingram tore his knee and will miss the season.  Donnie Avery (foot) will miss a month.  Antonio Bryant (knee) will miss the rest of the preseason.  Brian Cushing hurt his knee.  Antoine Bethea broke his hand.  Alan Faneca broke his finger.  Donte’ Stallworth got a full year suspension.  The Eagles signed Michael Vick.  Out with Dawkins, in with Vick.  Classy.  Tom Brady looked good in his return.

Ben Wallace is returning to Detroit.  The Hawks re-signed Marvin Williams.  The Celtics signed Shelden Williams.  The Nuggets traded Steven Hunter and a future first round pick to Memphis for a future second round pick.  They needed to clear space on their payroll.  Kurt Rambis is Minnesota’s new Coach.  Big Baby re-upped with the Celtics.  Linas Kleiza signed a two-year deal with Olympiakos.  Von Wafer will join him.  Pau Gasol broke his finger.  The Sixers signed Royal Ivey.  Leon Powe signed with Cleveland.  Now LeBron will stay.  Washington signed Fabricio Oberto.  New Orleans sent Rasual Butler to the Clippers for a future draft pick.  David Anderson signed with Houston.  Minnesota traded Quentin Richardson to Miami for Mark Blount.

Patrick Kane was charged with theft for allegedly hitting a cab driver for not having 20 cents in change from his $15 fare.  If it’s true, what a joke.  You make a ton of cash.  Give the driver a twenty spot and be on your way.  Buffalo signed Mike Grier.  Nashville signed Ryan Jones.  Anaheim acquired Justin Pogge from Toronto for a 2011 draft pick.  Edmonton signed Ladislav Smid. 

West Virginia WR Jock Sanders was reinstated.  Michigan State reinstated Glenn Winston.   Ohio State LB Tyler Moeller (head) will miss the whole season.  Texas Tech RB Baron Batch will miss a month with an arm injury.  Marell Evans is transferring from Michigan.  Virginia Tech RB Darren Evans will miss the year after tearing his knee.

Isiah Thomas landed Dominique Ferguson, a top ten recruit.  Georgia Tech’s Kammeon Holsey tore his ACL.  Centenary’s Chase Adams is transferring to Pitt.  Rick Pitino got in some hot water for cheating on his wife in a restaurant.

Tiger Woods won the Bridgestone Invitational.  John Rollins won the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open.  Chris Tidland won the Wichita Open.  Jennifer Song won the  U.S. Women’s Amateur Open.  Tiger Woods jumped out to an early lead in the PGA Championships.

Tony Stewart won the Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International.  Marcos Androse won the Zippo 200 on the Nationwide tour.

Juan Martin Del Potro beat Andy Roddick in the ATP Legg Mason Tennis Classic.  Flavia Pennetta beat Samantha Stosur in the WTA LA Women’s Tennis Championships Presented by Herbalife.

Beanie Wells sprained his ankle.  Plaxico Burress was indicted on three charges.  Marshawn Lynch lost his appeal and his three game ban will remain.  Philly’s Stewart Bradley (knee) will miss the whole season.  Maake Kemoeatu tore his Achilles tendon.  The Chiefs signed Amani Toomer.  The Patriots signed Andrew Walter and released Matt Guttierez.  Texans CB Jacques Reeves broke his leg and C Chris Myers sprained his ankle.  Eli Manning got PAID.  Juqua Parker got popped with weed.  Harry Douglas tore his knee and will miss the season.  Roddy White is holding out.  Braylon Edward came off the PUP list.  The Patriots got Derrick Burgess from the Raiders.

Hawaii Coach Greg McMackin was suspended for 30 days for a gay slur.  Mississippi said thanks, but no thanks to signee Jamar Hornsby.  Urban Meyer is getting PAID.

East Tennessee State Center Seth Coy died in a car accident.

Denny Hamlin won the Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway.  Brad Keselowski won the Nationwide Series race at Iowa Speedway.

Thomaz Bellucci beat Andreas Beck to win the ATP Allianz Suisse Open Gstaad.  Nikolay Davydenko beat Juan Carlos Ferrero to win the ATP Studena Croatia Open.  Sam Querrey beat Carsten Ball to win the ATP LA Tennis Open.  Marion Bartoli beat Venus Williams to win the WTA Tour Bank of the West Classic. Matt Holliday was traded to St. Louis.  He had four hits in his debut.  The Red Sox designated Mark Kotsay for assignment.  Ted Lilly, Erik Bedard, Brett Gardner, and Gary Sheffield went on the DL.  Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice were inducted into the Hall of Fame.  The Mets fired Tony Bernazard.  Josh Willingham hit 2 Grand Slams in one game.  Tim Lincecum struck out 15 Pirates.  Cleveland sent Ryan Garko to San Francisco for prospect Scott Barnes.  The Red Sox traded Mark Kotsay to the White Sox for Brian Anderson.  Mark Buehrle set a record with 45 consecutive retired batters.  The Pirates traded Jack Wilson and Ian Snell to Seattle for Ronny Cedeno, Jeff Clement, and prospects.  The Phillies traded prospects to Cleveland for Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco.  The NY Times is reporting that Manny and Big Papi tested positive for steroids in 2003.  Detroit sent OF Josh Anderson to Kansas City for cash considerations.  Reed Johnson (foot) will miss a month.  The Pirates sent Freddy Sanchez to San Francisco for prized prospect Tim Alderson.  Baltimore traded George Sherrill to the Dodgers for prospects.

Baltimore signed Drew Bennett, who quickly retired.  Michael Vick got reinstated.  Charles Tillman will miss the start of camp following surgery.  Another guy said Marvin Harrison shot him.  I guess a return to the league isn’t in the cards.  Brett Favre told the Vikings he isn’t coming back.  Eagles Defensive Coordinator Jim Johnson lost his battle with cancer.  Kenechi Udeze retired following his bout with leukemia.

Andre Miller signed with Portland.  Toronto signed Rasho Nesterovich.  Drew Gooden signed with Dallas.  The Wolves sent Etan Thomas to Oklahoma City for Chucky Atkins and Damien Wilkins.  The Bobcats sent Emeka Okafor to the Hornets for Tyson Chandler.  Dallas signed Tim Thomas.  Indiana signed Earl Watson.  New Orleans signed Ike Diogu. Golden State sent Marco Belinelli to Toronto for Devean George.  Lamar Odom re-signed with the Lakers.

Carolina sent Patrick Eaves for Aaron Ward.  Boston signed Derek Morris.  Calgary sent Wayne Primeau to Toronto for Anton Stralman and Colin Stuart.  Tampa Bay bought out Vaclav Prospal’s contract.  Carolina did the same with Frantisek Kaberle.  Tony Amonte, John LeClair, Tom Barrassso, and the 1998 U.S. Women’s Hockey team were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Reports came out that Steve McNair was drunk when he was murdered.  Last time I checked a couch wasn’t considered a motor vehicle.  Who cares if he had been drinking?  Michael Vick is a free man.  We’ll have to wait to see what Goodell does.  Jeremy Newberry injured his knee and will call it a career.  Big Ben was accused of sexual assault.  Detroit sent Ronald Curry to St. Louis for Orien Harris.  The Vikings signed Antoine Winfield to a five-year deal.

Chris Wilcox signed with the Pistons.  The Clippers sent Zach Randolph to Memphis for Quentin Richardson.  Steve Nash is sticking with Phoenix.  The Wolves traded Craig Smith, Sebastian Telfair, and Mark Madsen for Quentin Richardson.  I hope he hasn’t wasted his time house hunting.  The Pacers chose not to match Jarrett Jack’s offer from Toronto making him a Raptor.  Earl Watson will replace him.  Orlando signed Matt Barnes.  Yao Ming had foot surgery.  Sacramento signed Sean May.  Jaamal Magloire signed with Miami.  The Curse of the Clippers continues.  Blake Griffin has a shoulder strain.  The Pacers parted ways with Jamaal Tinsley.  The Islanders signed Martin Biron.  The LeBron dunk video was released.  I have as much interest in seeing that as I do that shady Erin Andrews video.

Troy Aikman, Lou Holtz, Wilber Marshall, Randall McDaniel, Sam Mills, Jay Novachek, Rod Smith, and Thurman Thomas highlight the 2009 Class of College Football Hall of Famers.  Mississippi State RB Anthony Dixon got popped for a DUI.  Iowa gave Coach Kirk Ferentz a long-term extension.  Four North Dakota State football players have been popped for DUIs in the lasts six months.  Illinois gave Ron Zook an extension.

Ed O’Bannon is part of a class action lawsuit against the NCAA for using images of student-athletes without compensation.  Anthony Mason, Jr. gained a year of eligibility because of a foot injury costing him the bulk of last season.  East Tennessee State gave Murry Bartow an extension.

Stewart Cink won the British Open.  Tom Watson challenged history, but fell short.  Tiger Woods missed the cut.  Bo Van Pelt won the U.S. Bank Championship.  Rick Rhoden won the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship.  Brad Benjamin won the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.

  Prince Fielder won the HR contest.  Roy Halladay and Tim Lincecum started the AS Game.  Jim Riggleman replaced Manny Acta as Washington’s Skipper.  Jay Bruce (wrist)is out for up to two months.  Chone Figgins replaced Evan Longoria in the AS game.  Pedro signed with the Phillies.  The AL won the AS Game again.  Carl Crawford got the MVP after a game-saving catch.  Ryan Howard hit his 200th HR the fastest in MLB history.

San Diego RB Curtis Brinkley was shot in Philly.  Derrick Mason is retiring.  Tampa Bay cut Brian Griese.  The Jets cut Bubba Franks.  Matt Ca$$el signed a huge deal with the Chiefs.   Terrell Suggs got paid too.  Travis Henry got a three-year jail sentence for his drug arrest.  Brilliant.  The Redskins picked Jeremy Jarmon in the supplemental draft.

Grant Hill signed a two-year dal with Phoenix.  Portland’s Patrick Mills broke his foot.  Orlando signed Brandon Bass.  Memphis cut Jerry Stackhouse.  Channing Frye signed in Phoenix as well.  A ‘mare Stoudemire had eye surgery.  Orlando matched Dallas’ contract for Marcin Gortat.  Denver got Arron Affalo, Walter Sharpe and cash for a future second round pick.  The Cavs signed Anthony Parker.  The Bulls signed Jannero Pargo and Lindsey Hunter.  The Suns bought out Ben Wallace’s contract.  Josh Childress will stay in Greece.

Tampa signed Antero Nittymaki.  Washington signed Brendan Morrison.  Toronto signed Rickard Wallin. Pittsburgh signed Jay McKee.  Montreal signed Travis Moen and Paul Mara.  New Jersey traded a 2010 draft pick to Edmonton for Tim Sestito and signed Yann Danis.  Jacques Lemaire is back with New Jersey.  The Rangers signed Ryan Callahan.  Anaheim signed James Wisniewski.  The Rangers sent Lauri Korpikoski to Phoenix for Enver Lisin.  Chicago named Stan Bowman as their new GM.  The Islanders signed #1 pick John Tavares.  Atlanta signed Kari Lehtonen.  Montreal signed Guillaume Latendresse and Shawn Belle.  Washington signed Jeff Schultz.  Phoenix signed Keith Yandle.  Atlanta signed Colby Armstrong.

Texas Tech’s McKinner Dixon and Kansas State’s Deon Murphy have declared for the supplemental draft.  Tennessee lost WRs Austin Rogers (knee) and Denarius Moore (foot) for the year.  Southern Miss ended Damion Fletcher’s suspension.

Providence gave Coach Keno Davis an extension.

Mark Martin won the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at Chicagoland Speedway.  Joey Logano won the Nationwide race.

Phil Mickelson is skipping the British Open as expected.  Roger Tambellini won the Wayne Gretzky Classic (Nationwide tour).  Martin Kaymer won the Scottish Open.  Bernhard Langer won the 3M Championship.  Steve Stricker won the John Deere Classic.  Eun-Hee Ji won the U.S. Women’s Open.

Rajeev Ram beat Sam Querrey to win the ATP Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championship.  Agnes Szavay beat Patty Schnyder to win the WTA GDF Suez Grand Prix.  Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez beat Caroline Wozniacki to win the WTA Tour Collector Swedish Open.

Adam Dunn hit his 300th career HR.  Chien-Ming Wang , Chris Leroux, Randy Johnson, and Mark DeRosa went on the DL.  San Diego traded Scott Hairston to Oakland for Ryan Webb and Craig Italiano and a player to be named later.  The Cubs sent Ryan Freel to Kansas City for a Minor Leaguer.  Jason Marquis became the year’s first 11-game winner.  Jarrod Washburn threw a one-hitter.  Paul Konerko had a three-HR game.  Ryan Dempster landed on the 15-day DL because of a fractured toe that he hurt following a Cubs victory.  Yeah, it’s been that kind of year for the Cubs.  Arizona sent Tony Pena to the White Sox for a prospect.  B.J. Ryan was released by the Blue Jays as Scott Downs came off the DL.  Jed Lowrie also came off the DL.  Brandon Inge and Shane Victorino were voted into the final two All-Star slots.

Steve McNair was found shot to death.  Michael Boley got suspended for a game for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.  A Minnesota judge blocked the suspension of the Williams Wall.

Hedo Turkoglu had an agreement with Portland before deciding to go to Toronto.  Rasheed Wallace signed with Boston.  The Lakers re-signed Shannon Brown.  Mike Bibby will return to the Hawks.  Andrea Bargnani agreed to an extension with Toronto.   The Pistons named John Kuester their new Coach.  Denver signed The Birdman to an extension.  The Mavs signed Quinton Ross.  Antonio McDyess signed with the Spurs.  Dallas, Orlando, Memphis, and Toronto were involved in a four-way trade in which Dallas got Shawn Marion and Toronto got Hedo Turkoglu.  Dallas then signed The Matrix to a five-year deal.  The Clippers signed Blake Griffin.  Mehmet Okur signed a two-year deal with Utah.

Colorado sent Ryan Smyth to LA for Kyle Quincey, Tom Preissing, and a draft pick.  Pittsburgh signed Ruslan Fedotenko.  Alex Kovalev signed with Ottawa.  Toronto signed Francois Beauchemin to a three-year deal.  St. Louis signed B.J. Crombeen.  Vancouver signed Andrew Raycroft.  The Rangers signed Christopher Higgins to a one-year deal.  Detroit signed Ville Leino.  Maxime Tolbert had shoulder surgery.  Toronto signed Jonas Gustavsson.  Chris Pronger signed a contract extension with the Flyers.  Joe Sakic is retiring. Chicago signed Cam Barker to a three-year deal. Saku Koivu signed a one-year deal with Anaheim.  Dallas sent a 6th round draft pick to Ottawa for Alex Auld.

Coach K will coach Team USA in the 2012 Olympics.

Washington is down two RBs after Brandon Johnson and David Freeman were ruled academically ineligible.  Western Carolina’s Ja’Quayvin Smalls died after a voluntary workout.  So tragic.  Oklahoma State’s Dexter Pratt and Jamal Mosley got pinched for holding weed.

Roger Federer beat Andy Roddick to win Wimbledon.  It was his record-setting 15th Grand Slam title.  Serena Williams beat Venus to win the Ladies Final.

Tiger Woods won the AT&T National.  Eunjung Yi won the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic.  Martin Kaymer won the French Open.  Phil Mickelson’s mother was diagnosed with cancer.

Tony Stewart won the Sprint Cup race at Daytona International Speedway.  Clint Bowyer won the Subway Jalapeno 250 at Daytona.

Atlanta’s Jeff Bennett broke his hand punching a door.  A-Rod juiced his way past Reggie Jackson on HR list.  Sidney Ponson got popped for taking a stimulant during the WBC.  Xavier Nady is done for the year.  Adrian Beltre will miss 6-8 weeks with a shoulder injury.  Cleveland traded Mark DeRosa to St. Louis for Chris Perez.  Andre Ethier clubbed 3 HRs in one game.  Milton Bradley acted the fool.  Mariano Rivera picked up his 500th Save.  Roy Halladay.  Mike Lowell had fluid drained from his hip.  He also received a shot.  Khalil Greene returned to the DL because of his anxiety disorder.  The Pirates traded Eric Hinske to the Yankees for Minor Leaguers Casey Erickson and Eric Fryer.  Antonio Bastardo was placed on the DL.  Carlos Beltran’s second opinion confirmed he had a bone bruise.  The Cubs called up Jeff Samardzija.  Pittsburgh sent Nyjer Morgan and Sean Burnett to the Washington for Lastings Milledge and Joel Hanrahan.  Mike Lowell went on the DL.  Josh Hamilton and Ervin Santana should return this weekend.  Elijah Dukes got sent down.  Mike Aviles is going under the knife to fix his elbow.  Koji Uehara’s elbow injury will cost him 6-8 weeks.  They are expandeing the All-Star rosters to 33.  The Cards signed prospect Wagner Mateo.  Aroldis Chapman defected from Cuba.  The Cubs got Jeff Baker from Colorado for a prospect and sent Ryan Freel down.  Manny is set to return.  I hope he struggles like A-Rod.

Jacksonville sent Dennis Northcutt to Detroit for Gerald Alexander.  LeSean McCoy came to terms with the Eagles.
   Calvin Pace got suspended four games for testing postive for a PED.

Shaq will wear #33 for the Cavs.  The Pacers did not pick up Marquis Daniels’ option making him a free agent.  The Nets picked up Jarvis Hayes’.  Zo will be Miami’s VP of player development.  Reports have surfaced that Yao Ming could miss all of next year, and possibly be forced to retire.  Kyle Korver is not opting out for Utah.  The Bucks did not pick up Charlie Villanueva’s option.  The Pistons fired Michael Curry.  Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur chose not to opt out either for the Jazz.  Kobe isn’t terminating his contract early either.  Anderson Varejao will see if there is any money in the free agent market.  Corey Maggette had wrist surgery.  J.R. Smith got a 90-day jail sentence for a car accident that took his friend’s life in 2007.  Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva will sign with Detroit.  The Clippers will send Zach Randolph to Memphis for Quentin Richardson.  Ron Artest will sign with the Lakers.  Unreal.  They are going to be tough.  Trevor Ariza will replace him in Houston.  Marcin Gortat will sign with Dallas.

The Islanders took John Tavares with the first pick.  Anaheim traded Chris Pronger and Ryan Dingle to Philadelphia for Joffrey Lupul, Luca Sbisa, two first round picks and a third rounder.  There were a few other minor trades (swapping of picks) during the draft.  Scott Niedermayer will play again next year.  Teemu Selanne will return for the Ducks as well.  The salary cap will drop next year.  Minnesota dealt a couple draft picks for Kyle Brodziak.  Calgary landed Jay Bouwmeester from Florida for Jordan Leopold.  Calgary then signed Bouwmeester to a five-year deal.  Leopold signed a one-year deal with Florida.  Bill Guerin re-signed with Pittsburgh.  Jussi Jokinen re-signed with Carolina.  St. Louis bought out Jay McKee’s contract.  Rob Blake signed with San Jose.  Chicago signed Dave Bolland.  New Jersey signed Johnny Oduya.  Ottawa agreed to send Dany Heatley to Edmonton for Andrew Cogliano, Dustin Penner, and Ladislav Smid, but Heatley rejected the trade.  The Rangers sent Scott Gomez, Tom Pyatt, and Mike Busto to Montreal for Chris Higgins, Ryan McDonagh, and Pavel Valentenko.  Daniel and Henrik Sedin signed matching five-year deals with Vancouver.  Marian Hossa signed a 12-year, $52 million deal.  Mattias Ohlund signed with Tampa Bay.  Toronto signed Colton Orr and Mike Komisarek.  Marian Gaborik signed with the Rangers.  Martin Havlat signed with Minnesota.  Montreal signed Michael Cammalleri, Brian Gionta, Jaroslav Spacek, and Hal Gill.  Edmonton signed Nikolai Khabibulin.  Atlanta signed Nik Antropov.  Boston signed Mark Recchi.  Ryane Clowe signed with San Jose.

Duke’s Eliot Williams is transferring to Memphis.  McDonald’s High School All-American Lance Stephenson is going to Cincinnati. Coach K is not going to leave to coach the Lakers.  Holy Cross hired Sean Kearney as Coach.

UConn’s Marcus Campbell won’t play next year.  NC State LB  Nate Irving broke his leg and collapsed his lung in an accident in which he was charged with careless and reckless driving.  Texas LB Sergio Kindle left the scene of an accident.  Arkansas kicked LB Khiry Battle to the curb after he got popped for a DUI.  West Virginia QB Eugene Smith broke his foot.
 Northern Iowa Offensive Lineman Austin Steichen was arrested for assault.



Joey Logano won the Lenox Industrial Tools 301.  He’s the youngest driver to win a Sprint Cup race.  Kyle Busch won the Camping World 200.



Kenny Perry won the Travelers Championship.  Jiyai Shin won the Wegmans LPGA.  Nick Dougherty won the BMW International Open.  Lonnie Nielsen won the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open.  Tom Gillis won the Nationwide Tour Players Cup.  Ryo Ishikawa won the Mizuno Open to qualify for the British Open.  Jennifer Song won the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship.

Serena and Venus will meet in the Wimbledon finals once again.
