LeGarrette Blount
was abandoned once again by Raheem Morris this week. At this point Blount is only safe as a RB #2/Flex Play depending on the opponent. Even when he was successful last week vs. the Saints, the Bucs made him an afterthought due to their hope of getting Josh Freeman on a roll. Until Freeman is able to prove some consistency he is not a good start. He has 7 interceptions in his last three games and is a liability which takes Mike Williams value down with him.
.
Both Robert Meachem and Lance Moore will only carry value based on who scores and to guess week to week in the Saints offense is nearly impossible. If you can trade one on both based on name value or a solid week then do so. Graham and Colston are the only two trustworthy options.
.
Even with Mike Wallace receiving more targets this week, Antonio Brown is the real deal and finished with the higher total yardage. He should be added in all leagues or traded for if you can get him from a lesser informed owner in your league.
.
Brandon Lloyd had 9 targets in  Week 10 and has instant chemistry with Bradford given his familiarity with the system. That’s 22 targets in two games and there is no reason to believe he won’t be Bradford’s primary target.
.
Bench all of your Colts. Curtis Painter was benched once again for Orlovsky and neither is lighting up the town. The Colts have been one of the more anemic offenses the past several weeks and things don’t look to be moving in the right direction.
.
Reggie Bush is having a break out year in terms of being a true running back. He is averaging 4.8 YPC on the season and has 3 scores in two games. He should hold on to the starting job going ahead and continue his 10-15 touches per game. Trade Brandon Marshall, he has been one of the most ineffective wide receivers in the red zone and you can do better than hope for big yardage days. His name still carries value and you may be able to find a buyer willing to give up a better, more consistent threat.
.
Sell Tim Tebow while you can at his peak. The move to the option scheme is cause for worry as Tebow completed two passes on eight attempts. Think that’s really going to work in the long run? While he is a gamer and will put up points, use his value to trade for real depth in you have him and are looking at a playoff birth in your league.
.
Be wary of the situation in Arizona now that John Skelton has posted two solid games in a row. Kevin Kolb will likely get his job back, but Skelton has energized this team and they may stick with him just until he faults. Early Doucet should be owned if you can get him off the wire in shallower leagues. He is a solid WR #3 and has been targeted by both quarterbacks as a go to guy every time Fitz is facing extra defenders.
.
Snatch Earl Bennett off waivers if you are in need of a WR #3 with upside. He now has posted 176 yards with a score in the two games since his return to full health and is Jay Cutler’s number one look.
.
Jeremy Maclin suffered a hammy strain late in the game Sunday and was unable to return. This after he suffered a bruised shoulder early in the game. Hamstring pulls are tough to get over at this point in the season and the Eagles are playing for nothing but pride.
.
Keep tabs on the injuries to both Willis McGahee and Knowshon Moreno. Each was forced out of Sunday’s game with injury, Moreno with the more serious ailment of a strained knee. McGahee stated he would have been able to return in an emergency with a pulled hamstring but should not be depended on given the Broncos Thursday night game. Lance Ball will be the guy to claim off waivers since he will most likely carry the load.
.
Frank Gore was held to 6 carries for 0 yards Sunday, the first time in 70 games for the 49ers stud. He apparently suffered a knee injury but was supposedly able to return if needed. Don’t expect him to participate much if any all week, but you better have another option in case things are worse than expected.
.
Matt Cassel left the stadium with a cast protecting his throwing hand, focused on keeping two of his fingers immobilized. A cast is never a good sign, especially when it’s on a quarterback.
.
Julio Jones left Sunday’s game with an injury after just one game back. No specifics on what he injured, but he did walk off into the dressing rooms on his own. If word comes down it was to his hamstring once again, get ready for the Falcons to take it easy on him and most likely rest him next week.
.
Sell high on Marshawn Lynch now! He posted a stellar game this week and does have a nice opponent in the Rams next week, but he faces the Bears and 49ers in weeks 15 and 16. Those are the two last weeks of the fantasy playoffs and you can do much better. If you already have him and are a lock to get in, trade for a back with better match ups. Even if you are not a lock, this offense is red zone anemic and you may be able to get a more dependable player to fill a hole on your squad.

There were some unusual heroes on Sunday. There always are. Let’s take a look at them and see if they are worthy of your fantasy rosters.
.
Matt Moore, QB, Miami Dolphins:  Moore threw for 244 yards and three touchdowns as the Dolphins thumped the Chiefs. Great game but as the bye weeks are coming to an end he’s only useful in two-quarterback leagues.
Ruling:  Don’t Sweat ‘em.
.
Donald Brown, RB, Indianapolis Colts:  Brown ran for 70 yards on 16 carries (4.4 ypc). It’s a messy RB situation on a bad football team, but it appears he’s the Indy back to own at this point.
Ruling:  Get ‘em.
.

Marshawn Lynch, RB, Seattle Seahawks
:  If Lynch was dropped after his scratch the other day he should be on your radar. He piled up 135 yards on 23 carries (5.9 ypc) and a score. He has scored a touchdown in four straight games.
Ruling:  Get ‘em.
.
Roy Helu, RB, Washington Redskins:  The Redskins RB carousel has led to Helu. He had ten carries for 41 yards, but really made a splash in the passing game catching 14 passes (17 targets) for 105 yards.
Ruling:  Get ‘em.
.
Lavelle Hawkins, WR, Tennessee Titans:  Hawkins caught five passes (seven targets) for 63 yards and a score. He had just 151 yards entering the game.
Ruling:  Don’t Sweat ‘em.
.
Jacoby Ford, WR, Oakland Raiders:  Ford caught five passes (six targets) for 105 yards and a touchdown. He has a chance with Carson Palmer, but I would not take a chance adding him.
Ruling:  Don’t Sweat ‘em.
.
Josh Cribbs, WR, Cleveland Browns:  Cribbs caught all five of his targets for 50 yards and a score. It was his second straight game with 50+ yards and a touchdown but he remains too unreliable for fantasy teams. That doesn’t take anything away from him as a football player though.
Ruling:  Don’t Sweat ‘em.
.
Plaxico Burress, WR, New York Jets:  Plax caught all five of his targets for 79 yards. It’s clear he’s becoming a bigger part of the offense since Week 7.
Ruling:  Get ‘em.
.
Steve Breaston, WR, Kansas City Chiefs:  Jonathan Baldwin was a beast on MNF, but yesterday Breaston was the lead dog. He caught seven passes (11 targets) for 115 yards. Baldwin had just one catch for 12 yards. Breaston is averaging 69.5 yards in his past six games.
Ruling:  Get ‘em.
.
Anthony Fasano, TE, Miami Dolphins:  Fasano didn’t Suck for Luck this week catching a pair of touchdown passes. He’s not a reliable fantasy play.
Ruling:  Don’t Sweat ‘em.

Time for another edition of Fantasy Football Out on a Limb. I scour the rosters to select a player who I feel will outperform a higher profile player in that given week. I base my decisions on matchups, how the players are trending, and the ever-important hunch. To mix things up I’ll occasionally do some two on one matchups or even pit RB or WR duos against each other. Sometimes I’ll spot a player some points.

Scoring
6 points for rushing or receiving TD
4 points for a passing TD
0.1 points per yard for rushing or receiving
0.05 points per passing yard.

Last Week

Matt Hasselbeck over Tony Romo: Winner Hasselbeck 20.95, Romo 19.05
Maurice Jones-Drew over Knowshon Moreno and Rashard Mendenhall (combined):
Winner MJD 19.4, Moren & Mendenhall 16.7 (Moreno 0
.3, Mendenhall 16.4)
Ryan Grant over Cedric Benson: Loser Grant 15.6, Benson 17.7
Kevin Walter +2 over Brandon Marshall: Loser Walter 8.7 (6.7 actual +2), Marshall 11.2
Nate Burleson over Derrick Mason: Winner Burleson 7.5, Mason 3.1
SS
Jamaal Charles over Laurence Maroney: Loser Charles 5.5, Maroney 14.2

Regular Picks:  3-2
Super Stretch Picks:  0-1
Overall:  3-3

Season Record
Regular Picks: 20-23
Super Stretch Picks:  3-8
Overall: 23-31

Week 10 Picks

Quarterback
Baltimore Ravens 2009 Football Headshots
Carson Palmer
Joe Flacco over Carson Palmer
It seems like ages since Flacco’s Week Six monster effort against the Vikings. Since then he’s had a bye and faced two of the league’s toughest defenses in Denver and Cincinnati. This week he’ll remind fantasy owners how good he was before the bye. Palmer heads out on the road to take on a Pittsburgh defense that’s regaining its championship form.

Running Backs
Tim Hightower profile Matt Forte
Tim Hightower over Matt Forte

Both of these backs are active in the passing game, which helps their cause. Forte has to play during a short week on the road against the 49ers’ #4 run defense. Hightower plays the Seahawks, who are not pushover with the 11th ranked run defense. However, he’s more likely to score a TD, which is what I feel will put him over the top this week.

New England Patriots 2009 Football Headshots Ryan Grant Profile
Laurence Maroney over Ryan Grant

Maroney faces the Colts’ 14th ranked run defense while Grant squares off against Dallas’ 12th ranked run defense. The Cowboys have allowed half as many rushing TDs (3) as Indianapolis has.  Green Bay will likely be down early, which would take Grant out of the equation.

Wide Receivers
Braylon Edwards profile
Jacksonville Jaguars 2009 Football Headshots
Braylon Edwards over Mike Sims-Walker
Braylon takes on the Jaguars’ 26th ranked pass defense while Sims-Walker faces the Jets 2nd ranked pass defense. Jacksonville has allowed ten more passing TDs, and Sims-Walker will have to deal with shutdown corner Darrelle Revis.

Miami Dolphins 2009 Football Headshots Justin Gage profile
Davone Bess over Justin Gage
Bess has at least three receptions in every game this year, and is primed to pick up his first TD against Tampa Bay, who is 30th in the league with 18 TDs allowed. Even if he doesn’t score, he’s  a good bet to put up solid yardage against the Bucs.

Vince Young is locking in to Gage to the tune of 138, or 46.5 percent, of the 297 yards he’s thrown for the past two weeks. However, Buffalo is 10th in the league in pass defense, and Tennessee will most likely rely on Chris Johnson this week.

SUPER STRETCH
Kansas City Chiefs 2009 Football Headshots Marshawn Lynch
Jamaal Charles over Marshawn Lynch

I’ll give Charles another chance to prove himself. If he can’t do it against the Raiders and their 29th ranked run defense, I don’t know when he’ll be able to do it. Lynch takes on the resurgent Tennessee Titan team on the road. Buffalo has struggled to move the ball through the air, so the Titans will be able to key in on shutting down Lynch.

NFL Week 10 Fantasy Fill-ins

11 November 2009

Before we get started, click here for my Week 10 NFL picks.

Putting the final piece of your fantasy football puzzle together

I’ve uncovered some guys you can plug in if you are dealing with an injury or tough matchups.

Matt Hasselbeck, QB, Seattle Seahawks
Seattle will have to throw plenty to keep up with Arizona on the road. Arizona has the 29th ranked pass defense, which works in Hasselbeck’s favor. In his last four starts against the Cardinals, he’s averaged 208.8 yards per game, 5 rushing yards, 1.5 TDs, and 1 INT. Not great numbers, but good for a 14.94 fantasy point average.

Alex Smith, QB, San Francisco 49ers
They play the early game so you’ll have to decide early to roll with Smith. He takes on the Bears that have allowed 10 TDs the past two weeks (I don’t count the Browns).

Ricky Williams, RB, Miami Dolphins
Ricky has shown that he’s more than a flex option or a bye week replacement. He has become a legitimate RB2, and should not be avoided because only two teams are on bye. Don’t be afraid to start both Ronnie Brown and Ricky against Tampa Bay’s 30th ranked run defense.
