Brought to you in honor of Strikeout for Troops.

Some reasonably available players to assist you in the Strikeouts category.  Realize that some of these will come with high ERAs & WHIPs because if a Pitcher has low numbers in those categories and a good K total, they’re already spoken for.
.
Scott Baker, Minnesota Twins:  Baker is 3-0 in his past three starts with 22 strikeouts in 24 innings (8.2 K/9), a 1.50 ERA, and a 0.79 WHIP. On the year he’s 5-4 with a 3.24 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP, and 88 strikeouts in 91-2/3 innings (8.6 K/9). Scott is owned in a little over half of fantasy leagues, a number that will quickly change if he keeps pitching the way he has been. His next start is Friday against Milwaukee.
.
Ryan Dempster, Chicago Cubs:  After resembling a dumpster early on, Dempster has come around. He’s 1-1 in his past three starts with a 1.96 ERA, a 1..25 WHIP, and 21 strikeouts in 18-1/3 innings (10.3 K/9). He’s still just 5-6 with a 5.46 ERA, a 1.48 WHIP, and 88 strikeouts in 92-1/3 innings (8.6 K/9) on the year, but he’s headed in the right direction. Ryan is owned in 68 percent of Yahoo! and 43.8 percent of ESPN leagues. His next start is Friday against Kansas City.
.
Tim Stauffer, San Diego Padres:  Stauffer is 1-1 in his past three starts with a 0.41 ERA, a 0.86 WHIP, and 18 strikeouts in 22 innings (7.4 K/9). He won’t get put up a gaudy strikeout total, but he has had at least five strikeouts in eight of his past eleven starts. On the year he’s 2-5 with a3.13 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, and 73 strikeouts in 92 innings (7.1 K/9). Tim is owned in 41 percent of Yahoo! and 14.6 percent of ESPN leagues. His next start is Friday against Atlanta.
.
Edinson Volquez, Cincinnati Reds:  Volquez is 1-1 in his past three starts with a 3.50 ERA, a 1.44 WHIP, and 18 strikeouts in 18 innings (9 K/9). On the year he’s 4-3 with a 5.61 ERA, a 1.61 WHIP, and 71 strikeouts in 69 innings (9.3 K/9). Edinson is owned in 39 percent of Yahoo! and 32.9 percent of ESPN leagues. His next start is Friday against Baltimore.
.
Chris Narveson, Milwaukee Brewers:  Narveson is 2-1 in his past three starts with a 3.60 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, and 17 strikeouts in 20 innings (7.7 K/9). On the year he’s 4-5 with a 4.55 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP, and 76 strikeouts in 85 innings (8.0 K/9). Chris is owned in 14 percent of Yahoo! and 9.6 percent of ESPN leagues. His next start is Sunday against Minnesota.
.
John Danks, Chicago White Sox:  After losing his first eight decisions, Danks is 3-0 in his past three starts with a 1.23 ERA, a 0.95 WHIP, and 17 strikeouts in 22 innings (7.0 K/9). On the year he’s 3-8 with a 4.29 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP, and 63 strikeouts in 92-1/3 innings (6.1 K/9). John is owned in a little over half of all fantasy leagues. .
Scott Baker, Minnesota Twins:  Baker has dialed it up in the strikeout department recently, picking up 22 in 18-1/3 innings (10.8 K/9) over his past three starts. His results haven’t been spectacular as he has a 5.40 ERA and 1.53 WHIP. On the year he’s 2-3 with 48 strikeouts in 49-2/3 innings (8.7 K/9), a 3.99 ERA, and a 1.31 WHIP. Scott is owned in 34 percent of Yahoo! and 18.3 percent of ESPN leagues.
.
Jake Arrieta, Baltimore Orioles:  Arrieta is 2-0 in his past three starts with a 2.37 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, and 21 strikeouts in 19 innings (9.9 K/9). On the year he’s 5-1 with a 4.03 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP, and 46 strikeouts in 51-1/3 innings (8.1 K/9). Jake is owned in 20 percent of Yahoo! and 28.5 percent of ESPN leagues.
.
Ryan Dempster, Chicago Cubs: After a brutal start, Dempster has turned it around going 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, and 20 strikeouts in 20 innings (9K/9) over his past three starts. On the year he’s 2-4 with a 6.71 ERA, a 1.53 WHIP, and 49 strikeouts in 51 innings (8.6 K/9). Ryan is owned in 67 percent of Yahoo! and 42 percent of ESPN leagues.
.
James McDonald, Pittsburgh Pirates:  McDonald has 20 strikeouts in 16 innings (11.3 K/9) over his past three starts with a 3.94 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. On the year he’s 2-3 with a 6.20 ERA, a 1.60 WHIP, and 35 strikeouts in 40-2/3 innings (7.7 K/9). You really have to pick your starts with him. James is owned in six percent of Yahoo! and 1.8 percent of ESPN leagues.
.
Brett Myers, Houston Astros:  Myers has been off this year, as evidenced by his 1-3 record, 4.79 ERA, and 1.58 ERA. His strikeout ratio is down to 7.0 K/9. Perhaps last night’s start, in which he struck out six while allowing two runs in six innings is the beginning of a turnaround. I don’t blame you if you give him another start to verify that. He’s available in about half of fantasy leagues.
.
Madison Bumgarner, San Francisco Giants:  Ever since I picked Bumgarner as a streaming option on April 27th against Pittsburgh, he has pitched well. I said he was too good not turn it around, and he has delivered. The credit is all mine. Kidding aside, Bumgarner has lost all three of his decisions since that start, but has a 1.80 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He also has 25 strikeouts in 25 innings (9.0 K/9). His hot stretch has allowed him to improve his season numbers to 0-6 with a 4.25 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP, and 34 strikeouts in 42-1/3 innings (7.2 K/9). Madison is owned in a little over half of fantasy leagues.
.
Jordan Zimmermann, Washington Nationals:  Zimmermann, today’s streaming pitcher option, has 21 strikeouts in 18-1/3 innings (10.3 K/9) over his past three starts. On the year he’s 2-4 with a 4.12 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP, and 35 strikeouts in 48 innings (6.6 K/9). He’s been about a strikeout per inning pitcher throughout his career so look for that number to improve dramatically. Jordan is owned in 51 percent of Yahoo! and 58.6 percent of ESPN leagues.

.
Ervin Santana, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim:  Santana has 17 strikeouts in 17 innings (9.0 K/9) over his past three starts, though he’s been rocked for a 6.35 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP. On the year he’s 1-3 with 33 strikeouts (7.68 K/9), a 4.89 ERA, and a 1.34 WHIP. Ervin is owned in 60 percent of Yahoo! and 29.3 percent of ESPN leagues.
.
Carlos Zambrano, Chicago Cubs:  Zambrano has 16 strikeouts in 19 innings (7.58 K/9) in his past three starts with a 3.79 ERA, and a 1.00 WHIP. On the year Big Z is 3-1 with 29 strikeouts (7.12K/9), a 4.91 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. Carlos is owned in 61 percent of Yahoo! and 36.9 percent of ESPN leagues.

.
Carlos Zambrano, Chicago Cubs:  Zambrano had allowed 12 runs in his first three starts before  holding the Padres scoreless for eight innings. Oddly enough both of his wins came in the games he allowed the most runs. With his ten strikeouts last night Big Z has 23 in 25-2/3 innings (8.06 K/9). He is 2-0 with a 4.21 ERA and 1.25 WHIP. Carlos is owned in 63 percent of Yahoo! and 47.9 percent of ESPN leagues.
.
Fausto Carmona, Cleveland Indians:  Carmona got destroyed in his first start, allowing ten runs in three innings. Since then he has allowed just three earned runs in 21-2/3 innings. He’s 1-2 with a 4.74 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. Carmona also has 20 strikeouts in 24-2/3 innings (7.30 K/9). Thanks to his horrible first start, Fausto is owned in just 20 percent of Yahoo! and 8.8 percent of ESPN leagues. He’s better than that.
.
Bud Norris, Houston Astros:  Norris is what he is right now. A guy that can help you in the strikeout category while hurting you in the ERA category. His ERA is 5.06, and that is after throwing six scoreless innings last Thursday. You’re getting him for his strikeouts, and that’s what he’s done so far. He has 20 Ks in 16 innings (11.25 K/9). Bud is owned in 11 percent of Yahoo! and 2.6 percent of ESPN leagues.
.
Randy Wolf, Milwaukee Brewers:   Wolf is a guy that you’ll want to pick your spots with. He can toss the occasional gem, but he can also get lit up. Thanks to ten strikeouts in his last start he’s up to 20 on the year in 16-2/3 innings (10.8 K/9). You can live with his 4.32 ERA, but it’s hard to stomach his 1.62 WHIP. Hence the seven percent Yahoo! and 17.3 percent ESPN ownership.
.
Travis Wood, Cincinnati Reds:  Wood has alternated between gems and disasters in his four starts on the year. He has 19 strikeouts in 22 innings (7.77 K/9). Wood is 1-2 with a 5.73 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. Travis is owned in 43 percent of Yahoo! and oddly 91.3 percent of ESPN leagues.
.
Chris Narveson, Milwaukee Brewers:  Narveson has 19 strikeout in 18-2/3 innings (9.16 K/9). He had thrown 13 scoreless innings over his first two starts before allowing three in5-2/3 innings in his last start. Narveson still posts a solid 1-0 record with a 1.45 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. Chris is owned in about 45 percent of fantasy leagues.
.
Jason Vargas, Seattle Mariners:  Vargas has 18 strikeouts in 22-2/3 innings. He got bombed for seven runs in 3-1/3 innings in one of his starts, but has only allowed four runs in 19-1/3 innings in his other three starts. He sits at 0-1 with a 4.37 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. Jason is owned in five percent of Yahoo! and 1.3 percent of ESPN leagues.
.
Brandon Beachy, Atlanta Braves:  Beachy has 17 strikeouts in 17-1/3 innings (8.83 K/9). He has just six career starts under his belt, but has plenty of potential. He sports a 5.19 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. Brandon is owned in17 percent of Yahoo! and 5.5 percent of ESPN leagues.
.
Aaron Harang, San Diego Padres:  Harang is reinventing himself in San Diego. The former two-time 200 strikeout pitcher is 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA, a 0.94 WHIP, and 16 strikeouts in 18 innings (8.0 K/9). Aaron is owned in about 55 percent of fantasy leagues.
