Friday Tidbits – 9/18/09

Derek Jeter now has more hits with the Yankees than anyone in their storied history.  Ichiro set the record with 200 hits in nine consecutive seasons.  Alfonso Soriano (knee) will go under the knife.  Justin Morneau (back) will miss the rest of the year.  Jorge Posada and the Yankees got in a brawl with Jesse Carlson and Toronto.  They got suspended.  Dice K came back and got the Win.  Carl Crawford and Pat Burrell got into it.  Roy Oswalt is done for the year.


Brett Favre was named a Captain of the Vikings.  Shawne Merriman won’t get charged in his alleged domestic assualt incident.  James Davis got in a car accident.  Richard Seymour finally reported to Oakland.  McNabb fractured a rib.  Drew Brees threw six TDs.  Adrian Peterson had 3 TDs.  Denver beat Cincy on a tipped pass.  Jay Cutler threw 4 INTs as the Bears lost.  Brian Urlacher (wrist) is gone for the year.  Anthony Gonzalez (knee) will miss 2-8 weeks.  Tom Brady looked OK until the 4th quarter when he was amazing.  The Bills gave the game away to the Pats.  The Pats throwback jerseys looked so cool.  LT rolled his ankle.  Sproles looked good filling in.  Shawn Andrews is done for the year.  The Eagles signed Jeff Garcia.  The Panthers signed A.J. Feeley.  Jacksonville lost Reggie Hayward for the year.  Someone vandalized Leodis McKelvin’s yard.  What an idiot.  Boo him, but leave his home alone.  The Jets got fined for no reporting Favre on the injury report last year.  The Colts signed Hank Baskett.  Vince Young took Steve McNair’s sons to their school’s Dear Dads Breakfast.  Nice guesture.  On the other end of the spectrum, Dunta Robinson got fined $25K for putting “Pay Me Rick” on his shoes last week. 


James Singelton signed with the Mavs.  Pat Riley and others took a paycut from the Heat.  Richard Jefferson dislocated his thumb.  The tyrant David Stern fined Stephen Jackson $25K for saying he wanted to be traded.  The Suns bought out Sasha Pavlovic’s contract.  He signed with the Wolves.  Tim Thomas needs to get his knee scoped.  Desmond Mason signed with the Kings.  Portland signed Juwan Howard.


Buffalo signed Drew Stafford.  Florida signed Dennis Seidenberg. St. Louis picked up the option on Coach Andy Murray’s contract.  Columbus signed Antooine Vermette.  The Wild signed Petr Sykora.


#3 USC beat #8 Ohio State.  Michigan beat #18 Notre Dame.  Houston beat #5 Oklahoma State.  UCLA’s Kevin Prince will miss a month.  Georgia’s Rod Battle and Pitt’s Andrew Taglianetti will miss the year with ACL injuries.  Georgia also lost Derrick Lott for the year to an ankle injury.  North Carolina lost Center Lowell Dyer and Tight End Zach Pianalto for a month.  #20 Miami beat #14 Georgia Tech.  Ohio State lost OL Jim Cordle for a month.


Memphis’ Angel Garcia tore his ACL.  Tom Izzo got a contract extension.  Oklahoma State gave Travis Ford an extension.  Pitt’s Jermaine Dixon broke his foot.  Myles Brand lost his bout with cancer.


Juan Martin del Potro beat Roger Federer to win the U.S. Open.  Kim Clijsters beat Caroline Wozniacki to win the Women’s Finals.  Venus and Serena won the Doubles Final.  Serena Williams had a meltdown in her last singles match and got fined.

Tiger Woods won the BMW Championship.  James Kingston won the Mercedes-Benz Championship.  The U.S. won the Walker Cup.  Jiyai Shin won the P&G Beauty NW Arkansas Championship.  Josh Teater won the Utah Championship.
Denny Hamlin won the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway.  Carl Edwards won the Nationwide race.

Grady Sizemore shut it down for the year.  Same with Jose Guillen.  Carlos Pena broke two fingers after getting hit by C.C. Sabathia finishing his season.  Fernando Rodney got a three-game suspension.  Corey Hart came off the DL.  So did Carlos Beltran.  Derek Jeter tied Lou Gehrig for the most hits for a Yankee.  Torii Hunter won the Branch Rickey Award.  He is just a great person.


Favre’s wallet is $10K lighter after getting fined for his crackback block.  The Bills fired OC Turk Schonert.  Kevin Jones will miss the year.  The Bills cut Dominic Rhodes.  The Giants cut David “F’n” Tyree.  The Saints cut Joey Harrington.  The Raiders cut Jeff Garcia.  Tampa dealt Luke McCown to Jacksonville for a pick.  The Patriots traded Richard Seymour to Oakland for a 2011 first round pick.  He still hasn’t reported to Oakland though.  Matthew Stafford will start for the Lions.  Shawne Merriman got himself in a stick situation.  We’ll have to see how it plays out, but it doesn’t look good.  In an odd turn of events, it appears the Broncos and Brandon Marshall are discussing an extension.  Favre said he wouldn’t put his streak before the team.  Pittsburgh beat Tennessee in OT to open the year.  The Jets could be in some hot water for not listing Favre on the injury report last year.  If it were the Patriots, there would be a lot more noise.  The Vikings cut Bobby Wade and signed Greg Lewis.


The Wolves signed PG Ramon Sessions.  Allen Iverson will play for Memphis next year.  C.J. Watson re-signed with Golden State. The Timberwovles kept dealing players by sending Darius Songaila and Bobby Brown to New Orleans for Antonio Daniels.  I wouldn’t get too cozy if I was Antonio.  Some guy named Michael Jordan will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.


Columbus signed Derick Brassard.  Boston signed Coach Claude Julien.  Anaheim signed Steve Eminger.  Dany Heatley is going to San Jose, Patrick Marleau is going to the Kings, and Alexander Frolov and Jarret Stoll is going to Ottawa in a three-team deal.


Oregon suspended LaGarrette Blount for the year.  #6 Ohio State barely beat Navy.  #22 Iowa narrowly defeast Northern Iowa.  #9 Oklahoma State beat #13 Georgia.  #20 BYU beat #3 Oklahoma.  #5 Alabama beat #7 Virginia Tech.  Sam Bradford (shoulder) will miss a couple of weeks.  Oklahoma’s Jermaine Gresham and Florida’s Andre Dubose will miss the rest of the year with injuries.  #3 USC meets #8 Ohio State and #18 Notre Dame takes on Michigan this weekend.

Samford’s Jim Griffin died of an apparent heart condition.  Seton Hall Coach Bobby Gonzalez got a contract extension.


Steve Stricker won the Deutsche Bank Championship.  Suzann Peterson won the Canadien Open.  Jeff Sluman won the Walmart First Tee Open.  Alexander Noren won the European Masters.  Troy Merritt won the Mexico Open.

Kasey Kahne won at  Atlanta Motor Speedway.  Kevin Harvick won the Nationwide race.

The Angels landed Scott Kazmir for some prospects.  John Lackey picked up his 100th Win.  The Dodgers landed Ronnie Belliard from the Nationals.  Zack Greinke tossed a one-hitter.  The Dodgers acquired Jim Thome and Jon Garland.  Brad Penny signed with the Giants.  Aaron Boone is back with the Astros.  David Wright came off the DL.  Jason Giambi joined Colorado.  Colorado Closer Huston Street (biceps) is out indefinitely.  Pedro Martinez tossed a gem to beat Tim Lincecum.  He’s 3-0 with a 3.52 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP.  Not bad for an old cat.  Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla had some beef.


The Broncos suspended Brandon Marshall.  Chicago’s Dusty Dvoracek (knee) is out for the year.  Byron Leftwich won the Tampa Bay starting QB gig.  Ochocinco got fined $5K for an orange chin strap.  Tedy Bruschi is calling it a career.  The Pats cut Kevin O’Connell.  Matt Cassel sprained his MCL.  Brett Favre looked much better in his second preseason start.  Osi had beef with the Giants and left practice.  Matt Schaub rolled his ankle.   Pacman Jones signed with the CFL.  Andre Smith suffered a foot fracture shortly after ending his holdout.  Ricky Williams signed an extension.  John Riggins and Clinton Portis have a beef.  Turns out Pacman won’ t play in the CFL after all.  Tampa Bay fired OC Jeff Jagodzinski. Michael Vick can return in Week 2.  Vince Young had a nice game.


J.R. Smith and Jason Richardson got suspended.  Bill Laimbeer will be on Minnesota’s coaching staff.  Rubio won’t play for them for two years.  Mikki Moore signed with Golden State.  Houston is saying that Yao Ming could play next year.  The Celtics signed Marquis Daniels.  Bruce Bowen is hanging it up.  Atlanta signed Jason Collins.


San Jose Sharks sent defensemen Christian Ehrhoff and Brad Lukowich to Vancouver Canucks for prospects.  Tampa Bay signed Alex Tanguay.  Paul Kelly was fired as the executive director by the NHLPA.  Adam Mair (hip) will miss six weeks.  Roberto Luongo signed a 12-year, $64 million deal with Vancouver.  Phillippe Boucher hung up his skates.  Phoenix signed Taylor Pratt.


Nick Saban got a lengthy extension at Alabama, but we all know it’s only good until someone offers him more money.  USC WR Ronald Johnson (collarbone) will miss two months and Shareece Wright (academics) will miss the year.  Michigan is in some hot water over possible practice violations. Cannon Smith is transferring to Memphis.  Iowa’s Jewel Hampton (knee) will miss the year.  Oklahoma State’s Jamal Mosley quit the team.  Alabama’s Julio Jones and Mark Ingram were reinstated.  Oklahoma State’s Orie Lemon tore his ACL.  South Carolina’s Clifton Geathers got a one-game suspension.  Arizona State suspended a few of their players.  Oklahoma’s Jermaine Gresham (knee) will miss their opener.  #14 Boise State beat #16 Oregon.


Pitt suspended Gilbert Brown because he wasn’t hitting the books.  Mississippi State Center Jarvis Varnado was hospitalized after not feeling well during a workout.


Heath Slocum if you got ‘em won at the Barclays.  Byeong-Hun An won the U.S. Amateur.  M.J. Hur won the Safeway Classic.  Gary Christian won the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic.  Loren Roberts won the Boeing Classic.  Peter Hedblom won the Johnnie Walker Championship.

Carl Edwards won the Nationwide race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.

Fernando Verdasco beat Sam Querrey to win the ATP Pilot Pen Tennis.  Caroline Wozniacki beat  Elena Vesnina in the Women’s final.

The Twins acquired Carl Pavano.  Jason Giambi was cut.  So was John Smoltz.  Carlos Zambrano went on the DL.  The Brewers traded for David Weathers.  The White Sox bought out Alex Rios’ contract.   Vladimir Guerrero hit his 400th HR.  Troy Tulowitzki hit for the Cycle.  Scott Rolen went on the DL.  Kevin  Youkilis and Rick Portcello each got five-game suspensions for fighting.  The Brewers sent J.J. Hardy to the minors and designated Bill Hall for assignment.  They also fired Pitching Coach Bill Castro.  Lance Berkman, Gil Meche, and LaTroy Hawkins came off the DL. Pedro got a Win in his return.  Someone poured a beer on Shane Victorino.   Jordan Zimmermann will have Tommy John surgery.  Jonny Gomes had a 3 HR game.  Jake Peavy pitched well in a rehab start.


Brandon Jones will miss two months with a cracked shoulder.  The Browns cut Shaun Smith.  Roddy White got PAID.  Rod Woodson, Randall McDaniel,  Bruce Smith, Derrick Thomas, Ralph Wilson and Bob Hayes were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  Cornelius Ingram tore his knee and will miss the season.  Donnie Avery (foot) will miss a month.  Antonio Bryant (knee) will miss the rest of the preseason.  Brian Cushing hurt his knee.  Antoine Bethea broke his hand.  Alan Faneca broke his finger.  Donte’ Stallworth got a full year suspension.  The Eagles signed Michael Vick.  Out with Dawkins, in with Vick.  Classy.  Tom Brady looked good in his return.


Ben Wallace is returning to Detroit.  The Hawks re-signed Marvin Williams.  The Celtics signed Shelden Williams.  The Nuggets traded Steven Hunter and a future first round pick to Memphis for a future second round pick.  They needed to clear space on their payroll.  Kurt Rambis is Minnesota’s new Coach.  Big Baby re-upped with the Celtics.  Linas Kleiza signed a two-year deal with Olympiakos.  Von Wafer will join him.  Pau Gasol broke his finger.  The Sixers signed Royal Ivey.  Leon Powe signed with Cleveland.  Now LeBron will stay.  Washington signed Fabricio Oberto.  New Orleans sent Rasual Butler to the Clippers for a future draft pick.  David Anderson signed with Houston.  Minnesota traded Quentin Richardson to Miami for Mark Blount.


Patrick Kane was charged with theft for allegedly hitting a cab driver for not having 20 cents in change from his $15 fare.  If it’s true, what a joke.  You make a ton of cash.  Give the driver a twenty spot and be on your way.  Buffalo signed Mike Grier.  Nashville signed Ryan Jones.  Anaheim acquired Justin Pogge from Toronto for a 2011 draft pick.  Edmonton signed Ladislav Smid. 


West Virginia WR Jock Sanders was reinstated.  Michigan State reinstated Glenn Winston.   Ohio State LB Tyler Moeller (head) will miss the whole season.  Texas Tech RB Baron Batch will miss a month with an arm injury.  Marell Evans is transferring from Michigan.  Virginia Tech RB Darren Evans will miss the year after tearing his knee.


Isiah Thomas landed Dominique Ferguson, a top ten recruit.  Georgia Tech’s Kammeon Holsey tore his ACL.  Centenary’s Chase Adams is transferring to Pitt.  Rick Pitino got in some hot water for cheating on his wife in a restaurant.

Tiger Woods won the Bridgestone Invitational.  John Rollins won the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open.  Chris Tidland won the Wichita Open.  Jennifer Song won the  U.S. Women’s Amateur Open.  Tiger Woods jumped out to an early lead in the PGA Championships.

Tony Stewart won the Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International.  Marcos Androse won the Zippo 200 on the Nationwide tour.

Juan Martin Del Potro beat Andy Roddick in the ATP Legg Mason Tennis Classic.  Flavia Pennetta beat Samantha Stosur in the WTA LA Women’s Tennis Championships Presented by Herbalife.

The White Sox landed Jake Peavy.  The Red Sox picked up Victor Martinez.  The Twins got Orlando Cabrera.  Melky Cabrera hit for the Cycle.  Ian Kinsler and Corey Hart went on the DL.  The Red Sox sent Adam LaRoche to Atlanta for Casey Kotchman.  The Blue Jays sent Scott Rolen to Cincy for Edwin Encarnacion and a couple Pitchers.  Jarrod Washburn was dealt to Detroit.  Edison Volquez had Tommy John surgery.  Brandon Webb went under the knife as well.  The Padres cut Mark Prior.  LaTroy’s wallet is a little lighter after he criticized an Ump.  Jonathon Niese is out for the year after tearing his hammy.  The Mets got Anderson Hernandez from Washington for Greg Veloz.  Prince Fielder objected to his beaning.  He and Guillermo Mota got fined.  Pedro Martinez had 11 Ks in a Double-A rehab start.  Justin Upton went on the DL.


Beanie Wells sprained his ankle.  Plaxico Burress was indicted on three charges.  Marshawn Lynch lost his appeal and his three game ban will remain.  Philly’s Stewart Bradley (knee) will miss the whole season.  Maake Kemoeatu tore his Achilles tendon.  The Chiefs signed Amani Toomer.  The Patriots signed Andrew Walter and released Matt Guttierez.  Texans CB Jacques Reeves broke his leg and C Chris Myers sprained his ankle.  Eli Manning got PAID.  Juqua Parker got popped with weed.  Harry Douglas tore his knee and will miss the season.  Roddy White is holding out.  Braylon Edward came off the PUP list.  The Patriots got Derrick Burgess from the Raiders.


Minnesota signed Ryan Hollins to an offer sheet.  Dallas has a week to match.
Milwaukee released Bruce Bowen.  Oklahoma City signed Kevin Ollie.  Brandon Roy signed an extension with Portland.  Primoz Brezec signed with Philly.  Rashard Lewis was suspended ten games for testing positive for DHEA.


Buffalo signed Cody McCormick.  Jeremy Roenick and Teppo Numminen are hanging up their skates.  Ottawa signed Brian Elliott.   Detroit signed Patrick Eaves.  Brendan Shanahan signed with New Jersey.


Hawaii Coach Greg McMackin was suspended for 30 days for a gay slur.  Mississippi said thanks, but no thanks to signee Jamar Hornsby.  Urban Meyer is getting PAID.


East Tennessee State Center Seth Coy died in a car accident.


Tiger Woods won the Buick Open.  He may or may not have broke wind on camera.  Fred Funk won the U.S. Senior Open.  Catriona Matthew won the Women’s British Open.  Derek Lamely won the Nationwide Childrens Hospital Invitational.  Oskar Henningsson won the Moravia Silesia Open.

Denny Hamlin won the Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway.  Brad Keselowski won the Nationwide Series race at Iowa Speedway.

Thomaz Bellucci beat Andreas Beck to win the ATP Allianz Suisse Open Gstaad.  Nikolay Davydenko beat Juan Carlos Ferrero to win the ATP Studena Croatia Open.  Sam Querrey beat Carsten Ball to win the ATP LA Tennis Open.  Marion Bartoli beat Venus Williams to win the WTA Tour Bank of the West Classic. Vera Dushevina beat Lucie Hradecka to win the WTA Istanbul Cup.
