LestersLegends.com » Week 4

Time for another edition of Fantasy Football Out on a Limb. I scour the rosters to select a player who I feel will outperform a higher profile player in that given week. I base my decisions on matchups, how the players are trending, and the ever-important hunch. To mix things up I’ll occasionally do some two on one matchups or even pit RB or WR duos against each other. Sometimes I’ll spot a player some points.

Scoring
6 points for rushing or receiving TD
4 points for a passing TD
0.1 points per yard for rushing or receiving
0.05 points per passing yard.

Last Week:
Trent Edwards vs. Matt Ryan – Loss.  Edwards 9.1, Ryan 9.85
Fred Jackson vs. Frank Gore – Win.  Jackson 9.7, Gore 0.4.  Injuries are part of the game.
Willis McGahee vs. Cedric Benson – Win. McGahee 18.7, Benson 14.1
Roy Williams vs. Dwayne Bowe – Incomplete.  Bowe didn’t play.
Eddie Royal vs. Jerricho Cotchery – Loss.  Royal 0.4, Cotchery 16.8
SS:  Anthony Fasano +2 vs. Owen Daniels – Loss.  Fasono 2, Daniels 9.8

Regular Picks:  2-2
Super Stretch Picks: 0-1
Overall:  2-3

Season Record
Regular Picks: 5-9
Super Stretch Picks:  0-3
Overall: 5-12

Week 4 Picks

Quarterback
Carson Palmer
Philip Rivers
Carson Palmer over Philip Rivers
These young QBs possess two of the best arms in the game.  When healthy they both can make all of the throws.  While Rivers, is the better of the two, his matchup against a bitter Pittsburgh team on primetime leads me to believe that Palmer, who is facing Cleveland, will win this battle.

Running Backs
Glen Coffee profile Willie Parker profile
Buffalo Bills 2009 Football Headshots
Glen Coffee over Willie Parker and Fred Jackson (individually)
Coffee struggled a bit replacing Frank Gore, but he was taking on one of the top run defenses in the league with much prep time.  Now that he has a week to work with the first team offense, and a much better matchup against St. Louis, I think he’ll have a nice week.  Willie Parker is coming off a big game, but he’ll face a tough test against San Diego. I also think Coffee can outproduce Fred Jackson.  Miami is tough against the run and he’ll have to share the load with Marshawn Lynch.

Cincinnati Bengals 2009 Football Headshots Steven Jackson profile
Cedric Benson over Steven Jackson
Benson should also rip the Brownies apart.  Largely taken as a RB3, Benson is solidifying his role as a legit RB2.  S-Jax is a one man wrecking crew in St. Louis, but there’s only so much he can do, especially when facing a good Niners D.  They will stuff the box and force Boller to beat them without their top WR.

Wide Receivers
Donald Driver profile Marques Colston profile
Donald Driver over Marques Colston
Driver has been hot the past couple weeks and will get plenty of looks in what should be a shootout in the Grudge Match against Minnesota on MNF.  Colston is also off to a fast start, but will be blanketed by Darrelle Revis this week as the Saints take on the Jets.

Kevin Walter profile Cleveland Browns 2009 Football Headshots
Kevin Walter over Braylon Edwards
Walter goes up against Oakland and should get plenty of looks with Andre Johnson garnering Nnamdi Asomugha’s attention and Owen Daniels working the middle of the field.  Braylon has was looked like a cream puff matchup at the beginning of the year, but my have things changed.  The Bengals are playing great D and Leon Hall has been playing lights out.
SUPER STRETCH
Josh Johnson profile Kansas City Chiefs 2009 Football Headshots
Josh Johnson over Matt Cassel
The Super Stretch picks have failed miserably this year, but I’m heading back out there anyway.  Johnson unseated Byron Leftwich and will get a shot at Washington, who is in complete disarray.  He didn’t look good in relief or Leftwich last week, but should look better with practice time under his belt.  Cassel is finding life a bit more challenging outside of Foxboro. Going up against the Giants, even at home, is a tall order.

Observations and Predictions…
LEV from Crazy Colored Glasses checks in with his look back at Week 4 and a preview to Week 5.

Week 4 was a big upset week for me as my beloved Dallas Cowboys were knocked off by a very impressive Washington Redskins team, which has now won 3 in a row after looking dead in the opener against the Giants. Jason Campbell showed great poise and played the new West Coast offense to perfection. They are going to be a team to be reckoned with. The Bears also showed they are a team to look out for in upsetting the Eagles. The Bears are a few breaks away from being 4-0. They are a team that bears watching. The Chiefs also pulled out a shocking win against the previously undefeated Broncos. I don’t know anyone who picked that. I was also surprised that the Bucs handled the Packers so easily. I think their was a bit of a letdown after the Cowboys game last week.

The rest of Sunday (and Monday) basically went according to plan. A few standouts were Brett’s big day against the Cardinals. Jacksonville pulling out a close against the Texans (welcome back Matt Schaub). And even though they lost, Baltimore also showed it has some fight in them behind rookie Joe Flacco. I like this kid, and with that defense they will be in every game.

Top Performers
QB-Brett Favre:
Huge 6 touchdown performance against the Cardinals.
RB-Larry Johnson: Was it a return to form, or a 1 game blip? The biggest reason for the Chiefs upset of the Broncos.
WR-Lavarenues Coles: Finally seems to have clicked with Favre as evidenced by his 3 score day.
TE-Zach Miller: A big reason the Raiders held a surprising lead at the half. Nice day, I think he’ll turn out to be JaMarcus Russell’s main weapon.
Special Teams-Washington Redskins: They dominated the Cowboys in kick coverage. Giving neither Adam Jones or Felix Jones a chance at any type of quality runback. Therefor pinning the Boys deep on their end of the field constantly.
Defense-Carolina Panthers: They did a good job of shutting down the resurgent Falcons.

Here are my thoughts on Week 5 games. Washington at the Eagles is my game of the week. I think the Eagles will be amped up and should win this game in a shootout. Only if Westbrook returns. Without Westy I think you have to favor the Skins. Other games I’ll have a close eye on are Pittsburgh versus the Jaguars. I’m not buying into the Jags yet, and I liked the toughness the Steelers showed. I pick the Steelers in a low scoring close game. Indy at Houston should be a tough road test for the Colts. I think the bye week came at the right time for the Colts. It should have allowed him to rest up and get on the same page with his receivers. Colts in a close one. Dallas very big over Cincy. Boys take out last weeks loss on the Bengals. Titans over an amped Baltimore in a low scoring defensive battle. The Cards over the Bills in my upset special. Just a hunch I’m having.

The rest of the games should go as follows (8-5 last week). Carolina over the Chiefs. Chicago’s Matt Forte running wild over Detroit for the win. Packers beating the Falcons in a close one. Chargers big over the Dolphins. Giants winning a close one over Seattle. Broncos beating the Bucs. Pats over the Niners in San Fran. The Saints over the Vikings to drop them to 1-4.

Fantasy Picks of the Week
QB-Tony Romo:
Should bounce back nicely from the loss to the Skins against an overmatched Bengals secondary.
RB-Matt Forte: The rookie has looked good as the focal point of the offense. Expect a great game against the lowly Lions front line.
WR-DeSean Jackson: The Skins have fits trying to cover speedy slot receivers. Jackson should see plenty of time in the slot in 3 receivers sets.
TE-Tony Gonzalez: Special shout-out to Tony who will become the all-time reception yardage leader for Tight Ends. He is (and has been for many years) my favorite player in the NFL and in my eyes is the greatest Tight End in the history of the league.
Special Team-San Diego: Return tandem of Sproles and Cromartie one of the most dangerous weapons in the game.
Defense-Titans: I expect a low scoring game in Baltimore with the Titans clamping down and limiting Flacco and the Ravens.

How did Week 4 go for you?  Did you survive the first bye week?

I’m in six leagues so I’ll recap each one.

KFFL Analysis League - I had a decent outing headlined by Edge and Adrian Peterson, but I got blitzed by David Garrard, Greg Jennings, and Brandon Marshall.  For some reason I’ve played two teams twice in a twelve team league already.  I’m now 2-2, with both losses coming to FantasySharks.com.  If I played Kevin Walter, I would have earned the Win.

Cage Match League (The Legend vs. Awesome) - Awesome continued to surge with the strong play of LT, Boldin, Witten, Marshall, and Gore.  He picked up the W despite a weak showing from MB3, Housh, and MN D.  I got decent efforts from Cutler, Portis, Fitz, T.O., Gates, and Philly D, but my decision to leave Romo and/or Brees and AP on the bench did me in.  I’m now 2-2 in this league.

LEV League - I had the good fortune of facing Brett Favre in this league.  He did you-know-what to my skull.  The only other player to do anyting was AP.  I got decent efforts from T.O., Crackman Jones, and J-Stwe.  Housh and Chris Perry left me hanging.  I guess I didn’t need Steve Slaton or Buckhalter in this league.  Oh wait, I would have won.  My loss sent me to 2-2.

Fantasy Sports Depot League - I got to face the trio of Romo, Jennings, and S-Jax in this league.  Lucky me.  Aside from those three, there wasn’t much to be had by my opponent.  Oh well, good enough as Reggie Bush and Chris Cooley let me down.  I did get solid work from DeSean Jackson, Johnny Lee  Higgins, and J-Stew.  Steve Slaton wasn’t needed here either.  I fell to 2-2 in this league.

My Keeper League -  I had personal commitments that kept me away from my computer so I got a Big Zero from Carson Palmer.  It wouldn’t have mattered though as I faced Kurt Warner, Coles, Boldin, Santana Moss, Portis, Witten, Scobee, and Jax D.  The only one to not reach double-figures was Selvin Young.  Besides Palmer, Andre Johnson and Holt let me down.  Jamal Lewis, Robert Meachem, and Buffalo D were solid.  My bench (with only three players – LJ, J-Stew, and Slaton nearly matched my starters).  I dropped to 1-3 in this league.

No Kicker League – Another league where I failed to bench Palmer.  This one stings more because I had a chance as Kurt Warner sat on my bench (hangs his head in shame).  I got strong play from Fitz, Cotchery, Slaton, and Meachem. Romo, Earnest Graham, Edge, and Witten carried my opponent LEV.   I’m now 3-1 in this league.

Weekly Record:  0-6
Season Record:  12-12

That’s how my weekend of fantasy football went. How did you do?

With Detroit, Indianapolis, Miami, New England, New York Giants, and Seattle on bye next week there are several outstanding players not available to your fantasy teams.  Let take a look at some attractive alternatives.

Quarterback
Peyton and Eli Manning are likely starters in most league.  Jon Kitna and Matt Hasselbeck are occasional starters.  These are holes that need to be fixed.  Naturally, St. Louis (272.3 ypg, 7 Passing TDs) is one of the first places I look.  They face Buffalo so instantly Trent Edwards gets my attention.  If you need a spot starter, Edwards is likely available on your waiver wire, and a decent plug-and-play guy this week.  New Orleans (258.7 ypg) has been dreadful as well so J.T. O’Sullivan is another good option.

Running Back
Joseph Addai, Julius Jones, and Brandon Jacobs are out this week.  A good substitute this week is Selvin Young since the Broncos are facing Kansas City’s porous Run D (204 ypg, 6 TDs).  If Denver can get Selvin 20 carries he’ll get around 100 yards.  You probably are starting Jamal Lewis, but if his slow start has kept you away, perhaps this is the week he returns to glory against Cincinnati (174.3 ypg).

Wide Receiver
Reggie Wayne, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Anthony Gonzalez, Marvin Harrison, Plaxico Burress, Calvin Johnson, and Roy Williams must be replaced this week.  Chad Ocho Cinco has been so bad that he’s not worthy of starting.  Although, this week they play the Browns and he appears to be a must play.  A lesser known alternative is Justin McCareins, who caught four Kerry Collin’s balls for 90 yards.  Minnesota’s Pass Defense is still not what it should be making McCareins a sneaky play.
