The NBA Western Conference’s Game of Hot Potato

Apr 14, 2008

With the NBA season winding down there is one final spot remaining.  Sure, you get to face either the Lakers or the Hornets, but it beats hitting the golf course early.  With that in mind,  you would expect great basketball the last couple weeks of the season for these teams.  Sorry.  Sure, Dallas is in, but they haven’t been doing anything to distance themselves from that 8 seed.  Denver is ahead of the Warriors by a half-game, but they could have already put them away.  The Warriors are the odd-man-out, but haven’t been playing like a playoff team lately.  Looking at the standings I see that in their last ten games Dallas is 5-5, Denver is 6-4, and Golden State is 5-5.  Not exactly how you want to head into the playoffs where you’re going to be heavy underdogs.  What’s worse is Carmelo Anthony just got arrested for the suspicion of a DUI.  Your team is battling for its playoff lives and you’re out getting drunk and driving around.  You’re a multi-millionaire…get a limo.  I know I’d rather have players on my team wait until the end of the playoffs to party at this point.  Nothing will happen in the form of a suspension for Carmelo until after this plays out.  However, it is a distraction that his team doesn’t need.  It’s time for him to grow up.  As for Dallas, Denver, and Golden State, it’s time for them to start playing with a little greater sense of urgency.
