Can Wei-Yin Chen Continue to Deliver?

Jul 28, 2012

.
At 8-6 with a 3.82 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP Baltimore starter Wei-Yin Chen is having a solid season. His strikeout rate (6.8 K/9) is not impressive, but has been solid in his rookie season with the O’s. Can he continue to deliver?
.
Chen has three straight quality starts, posting a 3.20 ERA during the stretch. His ERA for the month is at 4.06, which is the lowest he has posted since a 2.22 April.
.
Chen has been a much better option during home starts. He is 4-3 with a 3.39 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP at Camden Yards and 4-3 with a 4.27 ERA and 1.27 WHIP on the road. Though he is better at home, he has not been a bad road play.
.
Chen could be pitching a little over his head lately. Part of his July success can be contributed to a very fortunate .177 BABIP. His marks for the previous months were .290, .278, and .280 respectively. While his luck has improved, he has also ramped up his strikeout rate to 8.4 K/9 for the month, compared to 7.0, 6.9, 5.3 in his prior months. Even is his luck changes, his improved strikeout rate could offset some of the regression.
.
Wei-Yin Chen is owned in a little more than thirty percent of Yahoo! fantasy leagues and a little less than thirty percent of ESPN ones. His next start is Sunday against the A’s. At the very least he should be rostered as a streamer for that start. He has shown enought to be a permanent fixture in fantasy rotations in most leagues.
